Convertible suggestions.

Post by steve26 » Fri 01 Apr, 2016 12:31 pm

Hi everyone.
I am new to this forum and looking to buy a Mercedes again after owning a 500sec a while ago.
Now i would love to own a Convertible just for weekend drives and a little commuting but as usual i a small budget
so i have narrowed my search to the 208 2000 CLK320 Elegance which seem to sell at around $13k.
my question is what are peoples thoughts of this model vehicle? are they reliable at around 120ks to 150ks with a good service history?
i wouldn't buy anything without a service history.
Or should i wait a little longer, save some more money and look for a 2005-6 209 model at a higher price?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
you can't do anything wrong with the motor, hence it's based on the C-Class of the time. So check rust (doors trunk etc.). Don't forget, that you buy a 16-year-old-car, so the odd bit and pieces might have to be done, once you start driving it.

Hi Thank you for your reply.
that is all i wanted to hear, i can deal with the odd issue but i didn't want to deal with a problematic model.
I have since decided to look for a 2006 mercedes-benz clk 350 avantgarde . hope i don't need to wait too long.

Hi Steve
Just got back into a Merc after being away from them for 10 years, have now got an 04 CLK500 cab. It's awesome and its not so awesome, it looks and drives great but at 89000Ks one owner and full service history, I would have expected better than a cracked radiator and overflow tank ($1300), engine oil leaks front and rear (not major leaks), washer pump given up ($250), and an occasional lifter rattle on start up (this may have been fixed with the oil change I just did), and the seat memory system occasionally just does random stuff like try and crush my daughters legs by going all the way back, in spite of me not having touched anything.
To look at the car you would think it's been well looked after, my mechanic (BMW and Mercedes guy) just shrugged his shoulders and said they don't build them like they used to, they really are quite cheaply made in a lot of ways. The jury is out on wether or not I keep it, I've only had it 2 months.

With regard to yourself, that's a big jump from CLK320/$13000 to CLK350/25000ish, make sure you have a little in reserve because as I have mentioned, no matter the Ks and how well it's been looked after, it's still a relatively old car. The big thing with the CLK350 V6 is the balance shaft problems which normally occur after 90,000Ks, if you are lucky enough to get one of these it will cost you up to (i was quoted) $7000, the engine has to come out for a start. Do some research, you can get the serial numbers of the cars effected, I think from 05 onwards.

Good luck

Hi gassit320

Thank you for your valuable comments. That is what i was hoping not to hear because i have a Sprinter van
which has also has its share if issues which i expected better from MB.

I am also considering a CLK500 2004 but now i am having second thoughts..
