W114 CHARGING FROM CIGARETTE LIGHTER

Post by thirstymerc » Thu 07 Sep, 2017 6:08 pm

Howdy all,

Quick question.

Anyone had any luck running a standard charger from the cigarette lighter?

The lighter is heating up when pushed in, so unit works, but not getting any charge from it with a standard lighter plug to power my phone.

Could there be a voltage difference issue?

Any advice is appreciated

Cheers

Is there a fuse on the lighter plug that you pushed in?
A blown internal fuse is only reason that I can think of for it not supplying power to the phone.

Did you cross check with another lighter plug attachment?

Thanks for the response Chai.

I checked the fuse which was fine, but haven't looked for an internal one, so will have a good look at that and see if there lies the problem.

Cheers

"The lighter is heating up when pushed in, so unit works, but not getting any charge from it with a standard lighter plug to power my phone."

Early units may be a bit wider and the + terminal inside may be recessed so the charger cannot touch it.

Have you tried the charging adapter on another vehicle?
Does it work there?

Funny as I just had the very same issue/question. My 1974 280 will not operate any USB charger, even though the lighter works. I suspect the negative tabs are too short to reach the side contacts and I will try and change the socket so that the entire shaft is negative.

I'll post my results.

Glad I'm not the only one! Agree. I'm thinking it might be something to do with the length of the charger plug not reaching the connector points in the lighter socket also. I have tried the charger in our other car and works fine.

Let me know how you go Zohar.

Cheers guys
