Hi everyone,

a phone call yesterday ... I was told, that the container is on the ship. The confirmation, that the ship left the harbour is still outstanding ... :king:

Thomas,
Uncross one pair of fingers at a time and re-cross the opposite way. This is the only known solution to finger grossing cramps.
Looking forward to your good news. Presuming that the German customs and drug enforcement do not totally demolish the vehicle at the import end of the journey.

Yeah,
put salt in the wounds :laughing6: ... maybe some photos of sinking ships ... or containers floating on the ocean ...

The club here is very happy, because in May at the big festival there will be a special exhibition of W115 station wagons, IMA, Binz, Jaurnig ... and ... and ... hopefully the rural from Argentina!

Best regards

Someone better go and find Murphy and threaten him with electric shock therapy if he starts introducing any more of his Law into this commotion.

Uncross those fingers Thomas. You know it's pointless.

If it arrives in one piece, act surprised.
Then go home and drink a bottle of single malt.

You'll feel better about it all then. :drunken: :jokercolor: :laughing6: :occasion5:

Hi down under,

the ship left Buenos Aires on 6 December and the cars will arrive in Germany at the beginning of January. Talked to a company here to do all the import stuff and maybe transport the cars to me.

Sort of a xmas present for me

Thomas,
I hope all goes well. I don't want to alarm you unnecessarily, but the High Seas can be very dangerous, and between Argentina and Germany there is an awful lot of water:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paednwo-NhQ

I suggest you get the Kriegsmarine to organise a protective convoy. They haven't done much these last 70 years, and my understanding is that Argentina is simply awash with former U-boat commanders itching to rejoin the fight. What better use of their talents than to protect a valuable cargo of rare Mercedes?

Well David,

I talked to our Uschi, Minister of Defence, but hardly any equipment is operational at all. So I have to trust, that Trump doesn't build a wall in the ocean and the ship makes its way ...

On a positive note, I discussed the project with my little workshop today ... all ready to start in January!!! The owners son is 21, has done those conversions before and is quite confident, that we get that done.

So,
it's xmas time and what did I get from my daughter living in Melbourne? Tow Nutz to boganise my ute :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6:

It turns out that all the cost for fees, shipping, export and import significantly exceed the price of the two cars. I have heard, that they charged for the dog inspection more than 3,000 Euros, I cannot believe it!!!

In the meantime I was able to source original brochures ... for a ridiculous price as well ...

Enjoy christmas

Hi down under,

the container survived the storm and arrived in Germany yesterday. Obviously German customs want to have a look at the car ... let's see what the outcome is.

Just came back from Argentina. The story was even more complicated and distressing. Just one example: the customs at the port wanted to declare the cars as "loose goods" (like cartons in the container) to charge another 500 USD. Well the assistant of my friend told them angrily to throw the cars in the water, as the value of them is so much lower than the fees. Scared of not getting anything, they put the cars into the container ... :laughing6:

All the fees, export and import is now nearly twice as much as the cars cost. :banghead:

Regards
Thomas

Man, that is a lot of tins of Pal and tennis balls for the dogs...Truly eye watering. I got stung building our new house in the bush here $1500 for a fauna spotter-catcher who relocated 3 little lizards during the clearing process. So only $500 per lizard - I got off lightly!

Hi guys,

thanks for your words! I haven't heard from the company yesterday; here's a big wave of flu, my wife's in bed and in that company half of the staff is sick too. So the station wagon will be picked up by a club member and mine will be transported to the workshop directly, so they can start working on it. Maybe this week ... and there will definitely be a photo of the car with me :laughing6:

I wrote an email yesterday to Argentina, that the car went through customs in 2 (!) days ... I got a reply "I wish our country would work that way too"

Regards
Thomas

Edit: The Pick-up will be collected Thursday/Friday and probably arrive at the workshop next week Tuesday/Wednesday ... just sourced Series 1 chrome mirrors from the club

Just out of interest, how would "Mutti" go about setting up a registration tax on the ute.
Would it be any different to an old standard MB V8, or would you need to bend over some more because its a one off custom build?

Hi Brad,

registration is like all other cars, depending on size of the motor and exhauts. My objective is to get it registered as a historic vehicle, i. e. flat tax per year, like the W111 e. g.

As the car is more than 30 years old, the motor of the same manufacturer and also > 30 years old, it should work.

Ahh.... Yes that makes sense. I was browsing over the German rego requirements and I think I was just confusing my self with the translation within the text. They never teach you "fine print document" conversation German in class

To add to that: There's imho three advantages of the "H"-License here:

a) flat tax of 191 EUR / year
b) no cat requirements
c) access to all bigger cities in Germany, where you need a special sticker ("Feinstaub", small particles in the air); you might have seen green, yellow and red stickers on cars here.

But requirements are pretty strict; originality, good condition, only contemporary changes (so no modern wheels etc.), not even a modern radio is allowed (except in retro design) ...

But a 560 into W115? Are they open minded enough to think that both were available within the period and could have been built and driven on the roads at that time?
In SA they have held the factory original thing so tight that premerger AMG is not eligible for 'historical' rego because it didn't leave the factory that way. Brock Commodore etc etc all ineligible for a scheme that is supposedly there to preserve history - but only a select part of history in the minds of the rule makers and not an attempt to preserve the fleet that would have been on the road at the time. But as per another thread, looks like some common sense may be returning.

In fact if held to their rules most of the prewar Australian delivered cars would be ineligible because the bodies were all built by local coach builders to protect jobs before whole cars were built here.

Craig,

it's a 500 ... inofficially I got the message, that he wouldn't agree on a 560.

But that's the rules here, as I described above. The 5.0 was introduced in 1977 or 78, so definitely over 30 years old.

I was just picking up on what you said about being pretty strict about originality. But it must be that it is original to the era, but period modifications OK. That makes complete sense to me. If you could have done it and had it on the road back then.

Yep, the 560 came out in 1986, so it's 30 years now too. I haven't heard anymore from the W111 Coupe with the 560 (around 320hp!), but it should get a H-license too.

The problem here in Germany is: Our TÜV (roadworthiness checkers) are still mostly civil servants with their mindset; they do standard-checks etc. Hardly anyone is interested in old cars or has the knowledge, that a W114/5 and a R107 up to 1985 is more or less the same. And if you try to "tell" them, then it's just extra work for them, so you'll get a "no". With some contacts I know a TÜV-guy, who's an enthusiast too. So I had talks with him before, if he would accompany that project. So you need just good-will. That's why I cancelled the plan of the 560, when he told me "indirectly", that he would go along with a 500 pre-facelift. So he will put in his expertise DURING the modifications, so that when I "formally" present the car to the TÜV, he a) already knows the car in detail and b) all his requirements will be implemented.

There's no way to "force" those guys to anything. But this guy and the workshop (the son's 21 years old, has just finished his "Meister" at Mercedes and has done such conversions when he was 15 years old) are as enthusiastic as I am.

Let's see, if it works out
Thomas

Hi guys,

so the pick-up was delivered and it's a desaster. EVERY sheet of metal is rusted away, frame is bend, sillbar too, it had a bad front accident, so the WHOLE body must be done. As a normal W115 you'd just throw it in the bin. The only opportunity I have is my friend here, with the connections to Poland. If they do it for a friendship price, I might go ahead.

What a bummer after all this time ... slightly frustrated

That is not good news Thomas - I feel it for you.

I'd probably have to re-read the thread from the start to know, but wondering if you can save all the ute-specific bits and get a good(-ish) local /8 and modify. Or is the wheelbase different?

I'm just clutching at straws here, I guess.

Thanks for your words,

we discussed a donor car today, but it makes no sense. Most parts are available at Mercedes and the rest I might get via the club. I handed out a list to my MB dealer on the way back.

It is possible, technically. It's just a question of how much money I want to throw at it. The original plan, to do the motor modifications first and then the body is void. First thing is the body now, then the rest.

I'll report, once I hear from Poland.

That is very sad news for you Thomas.
I still go by my much earlier suggestion of transforming the SL donor into a ute. Perhaps you will meet with less resistance from the governing bodies.
As much as like W114's, personally I find the ute/pickup version the black sheep of the family. Perhaps because it appears to be cramped for cabin space to allow fat bastards like me easy entry and exit. I like em' with long doors.

Giles,
could you take the finger out of my wound? :laughing6: :laughing6:

Well my friend spoke to the nice Polish guy I met once. He's willing to do it, but can only start in April. Basis is the stripped down car, just with the axles to roll it. I will source all the necessary panels here (first Mercedes, then the club, then whereever). By accident he's in Germany next week and he will look at the car and - hopefully - give me a price +/- 1,000 Euros. I'll take it from there then.

I'm just not ready to give up.
Thomas

P. S.: Look at the seat belt and it says everything about the car.

this plate I dismantled yesterday ... the proof, that it's an original Mercedes Benz :laughing6:

Hi guys,
so the Polish panel beater was here yesterday. It's work, a lot of work. No price or estimation yet. First sanding and seeing what's left of it.

However, the club (who has the station wagon) offered me a real good W115 220, they got from the US. Good bodywork except the trunk inside (which is not relevant for me). So the latest status is to transport both cars to Poland, sand them and use the whole front part of the donor car. It'll be an expensive adventure

Status Update: I dismantled the cable harness last week and whereever you touch the car, it's in bad condition. However I decided to get the 220 California donor car; a panel beater checked the body for me and it has no accident, is straight and - except the boot floor - no rust. Besides that I got a price estimate from the Polish guy, which is high, but still less than half of what it would cost here in Germany.
Foto 2.JPG
The 220 /8 is a gasoline car, so we have the right tank and also column shift automatic. So we will strip down the donor car, do the V8-adaptations and then ship both stripped down cars to Poland, where the body will be done. He can only start in April/May and it will definitely take 'til the end of the year.

In the meantime I can start on the harness, I'm on the last legs with the cluster and I received the water-cut plexiglass front of the cluster. Enough time this year to get the rest prepared :laughing6:

Thomas,

Just read this for the first time after you saw the car. Not good news.

One thing that came to my mind is chemical stripping. I don't know whether that is a cost effective option (other than sanding) to remove all paint and rust...

Before I moved to Oz from NL, I was way more inclined to tackle serious rust then I am now. Just because things rust a lot less here.
I saw German people restore whole finnie bodies with not much to start with; here we whine when we have to patch a sill. :laughing6:

Anyway, good luck with the other donor car. Hope it all works out in the end!

Thanks Bart,

when you put this car into the bath, the outcome will be NOTHING :laughing6:
Next week we strip the donor car, I've sourced heaps of body parts by now and we'll test-install the V8 motor. Yesterday I spent more than 6 hours taking the harness out of the SL

Hi guys,

time for an update ... the donor car is REALLY good body-wise ... so it's dismantled this week, the SL arrived and the motor is in for the first time. Doesn't fit yet, but yesterday we planned the next measures on how to manage that. Column shift will not be possible as the mechanical stuff just doesn't fit ... but I will not give up, I have some ideas to use a step motor and operate the gear box electronically via the column shifter

Here's some photos:

Bye bye to the SL:

Hi guys,

an update, although a not too positive one. Hardly any progress, because the workshop I trusted ("no problem, been there done it, etc etc) lost interest and also couldn't do the job. "We don't know how to get the motor / steering / brake booster in there". Then - it's not a joke - they presented an "expert" - imho a person I wouldn't trust - who could solve the problem for 3,000 Euros. :banghead: ... well I declined. So probably next week I will terminate this.

I'm in contact with Stefan; some of you might have heard of the 450SLC 6.9 he made, awesome car. He was at my house years ago with that car and it is awesome. He's got a time issue, but I'm used to "no progress" now.

Keep you informed
Thomas

This is most disappointing Thomas - German engineering ain't what it used to be. This is not the same country that produced the Me 262.

You should ship it to the forum sponsor. They could do it - although they seem infinitely busy these days.
