Bit more work done on the rally coupe over the weekend. Rear windscreen now in and many thanks to Clyde for his assistance. New carpet now installed. Thanks to Allan for the templates he gave me when I purchased his metallic red coupe last year. I used marine grade carpet as is hard wearing and doesn't require any overlocking once cut. The sedan parts car donated her dash timber as its a more exotic finish than the coupes original beech finish. It did require some sanding back and I then orange oiled it to a semi gloss finish. Didn't want it to be glossy and look like plastic. Then I started trial fitting of some of the interior and to take stock of what I may need. Next week comes the front windscreen and rear side.

Since the cuts are already there, is it worth reinstalling some good speakers in here for the meantime, and keep your eyes open for some original ones down the line?

I'm in the process of retro fitting a quality audio setup in my w114. I have the stereo unit hidden nicely, but the speakers are proving a challenge. I'm a sucker for excellent audio quality. Oh the joys of not wanting to mess up the original interior

As the speaker cut outs are in the doors, I will probably put 6 inch bass drivers in and put some mid/tweeters up on the top of the dash. Car audio doesn't cut it for me these days.

What's that you say? Hearings not what it once was.

Also not overly concerned with keeping the car ultra original so type of head unit doesn't concern me. I installed a Apline unit in my W126 a few months ago as it has AM/FM/CD/USB/Bluetooth and hands free with a mic for under $300-. Doesn't look too bad either so I might go one of those for the coupe.

Trial fitting of the centre console and working towards putting the steering column and pedal box in soon.

Been some time between posts, but things are on the move.

The configuration for the engine has now been discussed with the Master Engine Rebuilder. The changes are with the head to a later version with later valves, out goes the D-jet computer and is replaced with a electronic dizzy and K-jet injection for more reliability.

Glad I hadn't yet purchased a new fuel pump as the K-jet is different. Had a two hour in depth with Klaus about what may need to be done and was he was very enlightening. He's keen to get this engine to go hard and run with reliability. Maybe a little lumpy at idle, but that's OK as it won't be sitting in city traffic.

No clutch fan as he has a set-up for twin thermos that trigger at 79deg off a sensor on the head. He also had a few ideas on a real twin system exhaust and has the manifolds to make it work. We also talked about the manual box and he was factory trained on manual boxes in Germany and knows them inside out.

Kaboom, this rig is goin' to jig.

it's been a long time between drinks, well posts anyway, on the progress of Ginger. Too many other things have got in the way.

I did managed to apply some time last weekend as the thought of selling her to finance something else that has entered into the frey.

It may just be a fleeting moment and something I'll get over but here are a few updated photos.

An update of what's been happening with Ginger over the past 12 months.

SAAS seats now being fitted with OEM runners with bridging bar to mount where the OEM seats did.

Interior dyed black to match SAAS seats.

M110 now fitted with Dbilas cams and fresh valve stem seals. The 4 speed manual is ready and able. The engine and box should be dropped in this coming week.

Series 1 doors with 1/4 Windows painted and fitted.

Front spoiler, from from a Volvo 260, is shaved down, trial fitted & now ready for painting along with moded front guards.

14 X 7 Rial rims will stay on until car is licensed. The the SSR Formula Mesh 15 x 11 rears & 15 X 9 fronts (courtesy of KimRH widest wheels of the West) will be fitted along with some bolt on guard flares. I'll be painting the SSR centres gold, naturally.

Next is getting my radiator tested and then some thermo fans organised, a bunch of fit offs and a custom exhaust made.

Corr, take a look at that hot redhead! And those wheels look awesome. Are you going to have to cut out any of the tubs/guards to make room? What happened to the 5 speed?

More than likely I'll have some trimming to do Drew. Won't know how much util I get the rubber, that will be the icing on the cake and post registration.

I thought long and hard about the 5 speed and came to the conclusion that it's only benefit was top speed as it's an overdrive. The 5 speed has been sold perhaps for a Peking to Paris W123 or a replacement box for a C114 currently on the market.

Ginger is for short courses where acceleration and cornering are important and top speed wouldn't be more than 160kmh.

Cheers Thomas, I'd seen it done by a guy in the US so I messaged him on how he did it. I've just slightly done it my way.

I'm actually pretty pleased the way it fits, should look good once it's painted.

Brilliant idea - that will work perfect and be easy to work with if you need to do some shaping to blend it all in

Gingers now in the performance shop getting some fabrication done.

Custom legth prop shaft in but not yet bolted up. Working in the wider version of the gearbox X-member. Clutch lines and gear linkages sorted.

Need to customised oil feeds to cooler as the electronic dizzy is bigger and impedes on the OEM pipes that wont now bolt up.

Plenty of space for a future tubo with some special pipe work from my performance man.

Great progress Giles - that engine has scrubbed up looking superb and looks like plenty of room for the turbo piping

Plenty of room off to the side, it's the escape route that will present a problem. No where near the room in W114 compared to a W126 etc. We will work it in due course.

The SSR''s have now been refurbed and I collect them tomorrow. Slow progress on Ginger lately as another purchase has been preoccupying my bank balance.
Here's what one of the rims looks like.

Also an update on the engine bay. The Solex carb will go and be replace with Stinger ECU, EFI with 6 throttle bodies and a coil pack set up. Similar to the upper photo. My engine bay at present is depicted in the lower photo.

Interesting stuff Giles.

How would it compare pricewise with 3 Weber sidedraft carbs?

Gee Giles the re-furb to gold centres has taken the rare deep dish wiremesh rims to another level - they look stunning now!!!
Engine bay work is going to be pretty unique as well - keep chipping away
Doesn't help when you have been side-tracked with your other special purchase of recent - hehe
Keep the pic updates flowing

Interesting Giles,

with all those modifications, what output do you expect?

Initially I had the Weber setup in mind. I did some research and found that the ECU is PC tunable without the need for a carbie expert to have to find, plus if I want to go to boost it will also allow and control it as well.
Price wise there's not that much difference.

I'm aiming for 180KW Thomas. The D-jet M110 was just under 140KW. With the 270/280 cams, modern EFI & custom exhaust I should get there. Plus with a 4 speed manual and 4.08 diff she should be lively.

Looks good Giles,

180kW is pretty ambitious (245 hp, like a 500SL without cat) ... afaik AMG only managed 225hp once. Will you have it tested once it's done?

I'm not that ambitious with my car; 5 litres and around 240hp is enough for the pick-up ...

Ambitious yes. The AMG version was some years ago and I beleive the modern EFI will make the difference.

Then I'm looking forward to a youtube video with a race between your 500SLC and Ginger, i. e. 0-160 km/h :laughing6:

There is not substitute for torque. 180 kw @ 400nm plus will win every day. But if I boost Ginger she might just get there quicker.
