Ginger is Rescued, now a work in progress.

Post by Giles » Wed 14 Dec, 2011 11:40 pm

Hi Guys,

Ginger is now rescued. She was transported home today and is now safe and sound, albeit somewhat dusty.

She has been saved from the crusher.

The adoption clinic will now go to work on reserecting her back to her former glory, a movie star.

Here is what she looks like now.

Weekend 1

Gave it a wipe down to remove the 4 years of dust and gave her a simple cut and polish. The paints OK for the intended purpose with a cople of rust spots and a ding in the passenger door that are in need of attention but nothing major.

Simply started to sort out what I have and what I need. I mean it's a 1000 piece plus jigsaw on a 1:1 scale. I'll have a practice runs off reassembley as this will enable me to find out what I need and where things go.

I thought I'd start from the grille, both upper and lower and work my way back.

Here's a few snaps of the rebuild and enhancements.

Weekend 3, Xmas got in the way of weekend 2.

Uodate so far. Removed the piles of parts from the cabin. Gave the seats and interior a good scrub. Reposessed the white steering wheel from my daughters W114, fitted it along with a set of 6 1/2 inch Bundts that I recently made good.

Here's a few snaps of the progress. Many things are just postioned in place, or taped, to see how they look and to take stock of what I will need to fit correctly. I feel a quantity order of a variety clips and seals coming on.

While the screen is out you should check the fan and see if it works. The dash has to come out to access the effing fan and the dash fits under the screen rubber so it pays to do it now .

I'll have to take a look at that Ron. I've seen the fan in the centre console but haven't yet got under the dash.

Hey Ron, if you come across a 5 litre motor and trans in good nick over the next six months, or a donor car, can you let me know. Something like a hail damage 500SEL/SEC would be good. There's not many to choose from on this side of the country. I sent the 380SEL I had to the graveyard as the motor in it was pretty suspect.

I have a 380SE coming in soon ( as soon as I get room ha ha) which is low ks .I'll fire it up and see if it is OK. Possibly simpler to try a early 380 first . BUT,there is a guy here trying to sell a worn 560 for around $3500 (he reads these so he may reply) which could be the car for you. keep and eye open for a W107 M117 sump too . They are designed to clear the crossmember and steering idler.

Thanks Mark.

The 500 would be preferred as there are cam options and less power degrading pollution equipment. I've seen a few 500's around the $2.5-5K mark. That I don't mind spending to get the motor/trans, diff and brakes. Then sell off what's left. I thinks it's better to spend more now and less on repairs. I'm hoping to find a something someone has spent some money on that has been in a bingle or hail damaged.

You will need a whole car so you can retrieve the loom. It's a major job to get the looms out in one peice but it will all fit into the W114 as if it were made for it. you only meed to make a hole on the passenger side footwell to run the KEjet wiring and fit the ECU under the dash.
Doing it this way you get all the aircon wiring etc and this makes for a neat useable set up.

Thanks Ron, as I suspected. Much better to have the whole canvas to work with.

Thanks Mark, I'll keep an eye on that one.

I am though a bit dubious on cars that haven't been run for a few years, rather have one that was running yesterday, they usually have less issues to deal with.

Keep up the watchful eye.

Been a while , but the serious work has now commenced on Ginger.

The V8 idea went out the window as I now have the original M110 motor. Alan the previous owner of Ruby had it. He no longer needed it so I scored it. It will be the go hard motor and for the time beingI'll put the engine and trans from Olive in to get her up and running.

So now we are at preparation stage. Body work, rust removal, panel mods and bling things into what will be loved by many and frowned upon by the tweed wearing fraternity. Yes sir there will be bling in this go fast thing. So if you scoff a chrome wheel arch moulds, look away now.

I have also repainted the fuel tank and the battery tray. Soon to start work on the front end and drop the sub frame to get easy access.

Stay tuned for more, now I don't have any other projects I can concentrate on this one.

Giles

Giles I went to a sawpmeet on Sunday just gone and there were a set of spotties that would have looked the trick for you they were about the original size and thickness, but modern. I didn't look at the price, but it would have been right I'm sure.

I was only thinking of myself and that I didn't want them for my coupe, so I passed them over.

I'll keep a look out for next time

Giles,

That's coming along nicely. Just regarding the photos of the headlight reflectors, they are actually the foglight reflectors, not high beams. Prior to the mid 1990s, MBs didn't have separate high beam reflectors (apart from the W108/109 stacked headlights and some of the US headlights such as those fitted to the 107, 108/109 and 116).

Hi Greg

Sorry but I will have correct you on this one. Euro models used them as fog lights in various form. France's has yellow lenses and clear for the majority of Europe. They have numbers ways of configuring them as there are receptors for the park light in either the main or high beam/fog light reflector. The give away for me was that the main lamp was only a single not dual element H4. I just check to make sure with the W114 parts car.

Giles,

I'd be interested to see more photos. I've never seen them with separate high beams in a W114 (or any model with one piece headlamps prior to the W124 500E and series 2 W202) so would be interested to see that. Are you talking about the reflectors at the bottom of the headlamp assembly? If they are in fact high beams, the lenses would have very little fluting in front of those reflectors (to give minimal spread for high beam) whereas if they are fog lights they will have heavier fluting than the area in front of the main reflector (to give a wide spread of light). If they are high beams, reflectors painted in a silver or even chrome-look paint will not be effective whereas for fog lights you may possibly get away with it.

To demonstrate the difference between the amount of fluting in the lenses, I have attached photos of the headlights that were unique to the W124 500E which had additional high beams in place of what are the fog lights in other W124 models. Note how little fluting there is in the lens in this area. I don't have a close up photos of regular W124 headlights but if you look at the photo of my 190E you can see how its headlight (which is very similar to the standard W124 headlight) has considerably more fluting in the lens in front of the fog light (the section nearest the grille).

That is the normal configuration of reflectors in a W114/115 headlamp (and any vertical one piece headlamp such as W108,109,111 & 112). The question of interest to me is your mention of the main reflector only being for low beam (with a single filament globe) and the bottom reflector for high beam. I have never seen this before. All those I have seen have had the fog light in the lower reflector.

My interest in seeing the lenses is the amount of fluting in the glass will indicate whether the lower section is intended as a high beam or a fog lamp. Is it possible that someone has performed their own modifications? What happens when switching on the various lamps (especially the high beams and the fog lamps). In your photos the globe in the main reflector appears to have a base (with 3 contacts) as used with a dual filament H4 (high and low beam). Are there 3 wires connected to the socket for this globe?

I stand corrected. :error: :notworthy:

After looking at both pair of lights I have the plot thickens. Greg you are correct, the centre reflectors are both low high. Now here is the weird bit. When the headlights are active and the high beam are engaged the bottom lights come on also.

Then there's also something else, when you put the high beams on, as in pull the stalk towards you, only the low beam comes on in the centre reflector, there is no high beam but the bottom lamp is also active. If fog light switch being engaged, pulled, it is totally inactive on any setting.

Any which way things are at the moment their will be spotties, and the bottom reflector will be park lights. This is due the cost of have the bottom reflectors resilvered which is 50% or more of the cost of a much more effective set of spotties.

Great to hear from you Michael. I hope all is good with you. Plenty been happening with the coupe as you've probably seen. Some bits go in, some bits come out but all in the name of progress. Picked up the 4 speed manual box this week, happy days. The flywheel is the next hurdle but I think I may have found the solution.
I have also started panting the front guards and I'm now awaiting the rest of the front end bits to arrive and then start on the rear end.
Watch this space.

Thanks for the welcome back gentlemen - Giles, things are great. Hope the same with you. Glad to see you shifted the 450, hopefully to a loving home.

Steve - keen to hear what progress if any with the M130 motor transplant or whole vehicle rebirth? Keen to grab that towbar from you one weekend soon too so I can get a mountain bike rack happening for Summer adventures. Shall give you a buzz.

Thanks Ron,

I have actually located a 108 032 0501 flywheel in Perth. You wouldn't beleive the price either. Will probably use it as template to have a custom one made.

Couldn't beleive it but the guys also an old school Merc mechanic and he's German. Looks like the engine is heading his way also. Happy days.

Yes I have resprayed it myself, just the front guards and the front apron so far. Trying to save some money and as not needing perfection as it's probably going to have a hard life anyway. It may end up with decals all over it one day, strategically placed on the imperfections.

Have yet to rub it back and buff as yet, just waiting a few days for the paint to cure.

More hard surface racing than dirt.

The gravel roads over here is seriously life threatening. They're like driving on marbles.

Should end up being something bred by these two.

Sounds like fun, My proclivities tend towards dirt which was why I smiled for a day straight seeing the pictured car running this years ARC Scouts rally SA.

But racing is racing and a Rote Sau hybrid sounds like a real head turner.

The thing about racing on Marbles though is that you have to have a distinct lack of them upstairs and yet 2 surplus sized units downstairs and the ability to look vacuous when people start talking about racing lines etc and 100 kph through the trees is only dangerous if you hit one......... Or so I used to tell myself repeatedly

Front end now rebuilt and installed. New bushes, ball joints, tie rods, idler arm, steering damper, shocks, bearings, caliper rebuild, brake hoses etc etc.

Used a spring compressor to get them back in plus a very strong rachet strap, something I don't want to do again. Three goes to get the first one right.

All dents now removed and a rub back and buff to come in a few days once the paint has cured.

Working on the interior now, any recommendations of glue to reattach the vinyl to metal parts of the rear door cards?

Also have two sets of spotties and custom made bracket soon to be completed.

Kwik Grip or Gel Grip contact adhesive is what I usually use with auto trim and it will stick to metal if the surface is clean.

Upholsterers use a spray contact adhesive and you can buy the stuff in pressure pack cans at any good craft shop Giles, make sure its contact adhesive though and that you have to spray both items, leave till tacky and then stick em together.

Great stuff with one teensy drawback being that you cant have a 2nd shot at the sticking if you stuff it up, Gel Grip however will give you a few shots before going right off.

Update so far.

Paint job done by me but I'm not happy with the result but we move on anyway. Came to the conclusion that its a Go Car not a Show Car. If I rustle up a sponsor in the future well they can paint it nice and shinny all over.

Got some of the chrome and bright work back on. The windscreen seals have been ordered so the rest of the glass can go back in. The existing roof lining has been patched so there's one less expense.

The rear end treatment will happen soon as I have the necessary parts. Once the glass goes back in I can totally strip the parts car. Still hunting for a few bits and pieces but the wish list is getting shorter and there's more going on the car than coming off.

WA, the land of sand and the great dry. Not much chance of this unit collecting much mud, her life is destined for the Tarmac.

No doubt there are lots of people that express there disgust of wheel arch moulds. Keep in mind that this car was heading for the crusher so if it wears some jewellery, so be it. Beats getting crushed. Can't keep all the people happy all the time.

Got stuck into Gingers rear end this weekend. Managed to put on a smile with the rear bumper on, rear parcel shelf mounted and the interior stripped and ready for a make over. Had to fabricate some chrome pieces and odds and sods.

The front and rear seals are in transit so the glass should go in in a week or so.
