Track tyres

Post by TargaSL » Tue 23 Mar, 2010 3:58 pm

I am just wasting about $6k on some tyres and thought others might benefit from my research

I run Dunlops Formula R for Targa 245/40/18. deciding which compound to run, it depends on the weather as too hard won;t warm up. maybe hard for the rear to take the beating from the chevy and medium for the front to get some solid turn in

http://www.stuckey.com.au/news_200210-01.aspx

And for track days, Derizza, something a little cheaper and wears much more with good wet weather tread depth
255/40/18 - $425
http://www.dunloptyres.com.au/TyreDetai ... m=nPerPage

oh well its only money

 Makes the used set of 225/60R15 Yokohama Advan 032R I purchased for the Oran Park track day last year seem cheap, even including the set of AMG Pentas on which they're mounted :!:

there are basically 4 grades or tyre from what i can see

road
road/track
road/semi slick
slick

The road/track i reckon the derriza are the best value/fit not far off semi slick and 3 times the life
road/semi slick - i use the Dunlop Formula R but you may get better value with a Bridgestone RE55

I have bought Formula R hardest compund for the rear (to take the beating form the Chevy) and 2nd hardest for the front, otherwise they may not warm up for the on/off tarmac rallying profile unlike tracks where you can keep the heat in

How much are the Derriza? In that same class, Kuhmo KU36 have very good writeups in forums (google it) and you can pick them up at about
$160 for 225/60/16 as a guide. That's what I expect to pay for tyres on the family car!

The A032's and A048's are full R spec and new are fairly pricey.

I can run road legal 8mm tread depth with the AD08's and they will not break traction with the 560.

rear is 265/35/r18 front is 235/40/r18. 2K for a set.

I'll second the KU36's for value for money, and for being a great track tyre. (Although I think you mean 225/50/16), although I have not tried any others to compare.

They are even better when people don't sell you ones pre-flat-spotted, ;)

Aah yes, 50's they are. If I could have got mind above matter the flat spots might not have been so bad! First track day Sunday but won't be able to comment because I will be running the Dunlop R's I have on the 15's, although 60 series still less diameter than the 16/50's just. It is so high geared it needs all the help it can get! Mind you once I wear them out my plan is to go to the Kuhmos in a 15/50. I am not in it for sheep stations so driving the car to the track on the KU36 and the slight less grip to the R's I dont think will bother me. As a street tyre I am loving the KU 36 though. This 'toy' car I am not likely to wear them out too quickly with occasional use. Havent used it under really wet conditions and I am sure performance would be compromised, but used it in 'greasy' first light rain after a while conditions and while I could provoke wheelspin that is not normally possible, it wasn't unmanageable, just requiring a bit more caution. Tried hard braking and it was fine, it was just putting the boot into it you could get it to break a little. Mind you the 500 is not putting out insignificant torque!

Counting the hours Shane?!!

I can picture the smile on your face now! In Melbourne for the F1GP and now a special car to get around in. I'm envious!

I imagine you won't find much time for OzBenz in the coming days, but if you do WE WANT PHOTOS!

Hopefully that 14 day permit means you may be able to swing by my place when you get home to Sydney. Got to check it out and get it together with my green machine for some pics.

Speaking of pics, hopefully you'll get some of your black 026 with Maurice's red 026 before they are separated. I wouldn't mind seeing some more shots of his red one either. Hopefully one of these days we can do a photo shoot of all three 026s together. It would be a bit special given they are the only three known to exist in Oz.

Anyone in Mlb is welcome to come for a blast in the SL

Car is at Brunswick just north of the city, and even better the radiator is back in (after a 170k road kill episode) so it actually goes. Ask Giles if it is worth the effort

Paul, I may have to take you up on that offer! And you can then also see the 500SLC.

I'm in melbs until Monday. When is good for you? (Outside of when the best action is on at the gp circuit).

The car is at MercStar which is Daniels shop (he built the thing and is now the nav for Targa)
He is dragging it around this weekend doing Targa prep
this afternoon would probably be the best

call me on 0427 471 908 and i will see if we can arrange to get Daniel to take you for a ride

Shane,

Now I'm really envious! Cruising around Melbourne in your new ride, going to the F1GP, and now a blast in Paul's rocketship! Just reading what has gone into his SL I can imagine how it goes. Hopefully I can enjoy the experience one day. As a driver rather than a navigator, hopefully my experience can be from the driver's seat! :P
