Paul,

Fantastic link, thanks! Great write-up, and great photos. Nice to see an 026 car out there doing what they were made for.

It hasn't made you think about using an SLC platform instead of an SL? Still, I guess even MB was preparing to swap to the SL platform for '82, before they pulled out.

I'm sure you have already seen this, but here is the link again for others.

The parts price list is quite interesting, and there are quite a few parts that may be useful to people like you.

Cheers

As i have sort of ended up here so i am making best use of the assets i already have

If i find a sponsor i would consider running a second car and a R107
though i find the smaller size particularly the wheelbase of the SL better for throwing it around aggressively

as well as that the roof comes off for hot summer days - auto aircon :)

I have tried to contact the link you sent but never got a reply from them

I am trying to dig up how to make 400+ reliable hp out of an M117 but they are only at 340hp as they are on dirt. You need a lot more to go fast on tarmac

Hi Foto,

I've been in contact with Paul about this and I'm getting very close to buying an SLC then fitting something (about 5ltr) to mockup a Rally SLC. Plenty of good dirt roads around the Southwest of WA. It won't be a show pony, just something with class and mumbo.

Giles

Giles, depending on your budget, how about a nice 450SLC 5.0. I have a line one one, it's in great shape, and you wouldn't have to change engines.

It's LHD (obviously) but in WA only needs to be 15yo to register, and it's over 30yo anyway.

Also, it will always be worth more than anything you cobble together from another SLC with a 5L engine, and will have all the 026 car aluminium panels.

The well priced one I know of is green. Mind you, JoeB may also be interested!

The chassis number is 1586

Hi Photo,

LHD, ex USA with fugly big bumper or from elsewhere?

My idea is to get a half reasonable one that would suit dirt roads and qualify for a Variety Bash. I think they have to be pre 1975, correct me if I'm wrong. Let me know further details if they're available.
As this one's not for investment and the budget's not huge it doesn't need to too sweet but if one came along at a reasonable price, who knows. I'm contemplating one in the for sale section, but I can't get to see it because it's in Melbourne. It looks like it might suit what I want it to, plus its SLC Rally silver. I'll leave the luxury ride to the 300SEL. It's going to stay put as I've rearranged the rear garage so well I reckon I can easily get another car in there. Amazing how much trash you can either sell in garage sale and throw into a 9 cubic metre dump bin.

Nope, no ugly bumpers.

Price would be about $10k to $12k by the time you got it here and registered though.

Actually, 1980 was their last year rallying the 500SLC and they were developing the 500SL for 1981 (see my article at http://www.mbcnsw.org.au/forum/index.ph ... 186.0.html ).
Speaking of the cars coming out of SLC Racing, have you seen the link to videos at http://mbca.cartama.net/showthread.php?t=31740 ?
TargaSL wrote:...I am trying to dig up how to make 400+ reliable hp out of an M117 but they are only at 340hp as they are on dirt. You need a lot more to go fast on tarmac
Looking at my article mentioned above, the factory 450SLC 5.0 (Group 4) rally cars were only good for about 300hp in 1979 and increased to 340hp in the 500SLC (Group 2) cars in 1980. The engine being developed for the 1981 season in the 500SL was reportedly good for 370hp. There certainly didn't appear to be any reliability issues with the engines at those power outputs (however there were issues with other apects of the rally cars).

Sounds too cheap to me. Maybe it's not as good as it looks in the pic. Beats me how one of the rarest post war MB models (and one with a short but successful rally history) sells so cheaply. If anyone wants a good one of these I suggest they act quickly as it seems enthusiasts are starting to wake up to how special these cars really are. They were manufactured in limited numbers and most were sold in Europe (and therefore many have rusted away). The few that remain are being bought up by SLC Racing for conversion into replicas of the factory rally cars and being sold at very high prices. As much as I would love a replica of the factory rally car, I couldn't bring myself to do it to my very original 500SLC. I will just have to do what Giles is planning and find a suitable donor (preferably already in silver).

Joe, total cost is approx $13,500 landed in Oz and including all compliance costs.

If you are interested, I can put you in touch with the seller, and with a good mob for importing.

Joe,

One part of me says don't bring another 107026 to Oz as I don't want them to become common here! Initially there was just my 500SLC and Maurice's 450SLC 5.0 in Melbourne. Now we know of another 500SLC that has arrived don't we

Another side of me says that a 107026 at $13,500 landed here is an absolute bargain. Let's face it, plenty of regular 450SLC (107024) ask (and sell for) a good bit more than that. There were 31,739 of them manufactured. By comparison there were only 2,769 of the 107026 (of which around 1,636 were the 450SLC 5.0 and around just 1,133 were the 500SLC). The 107026 is a nicer car to drive being more powerful and lighter giving better handling and much better power to weight ratio. It also has the motorsport history and if you get the 500SLC version you get the 4 speed auto and ABS. This has to make the 107026 an absolute bargain and surely a smart buy as a potential future classic.

I know there is the argument that the 107026 can only be found in left hand drive but once they are 30 years old that is not an issue here. Having driven around 6,000km in mine now I have to say I couldn't care less whether I drive sitting in the left or right seat. Let's face it, the two seating positions are less than a metre apart. Unless the car that Foto mentions needs lots of money spent, it has to be worth considering.

Targa SL,

Thanks for the nice comments re my 5 litre SLC article. If the SLCs coming out of SLC Racing were about 10% of the asking price I may be in a position to consider one, maybe. In the mean time I'll have to just dream.

I have been trying to find some info I have seen regarding the mods performed to the factory rally cars for each season or event. I can't remember if I had it emailed to me or if I read it online. It stated the engine mods which resulted in the 300 and 340 hp outputs. The researcher was the late Scott Saenger formerly of Texas. Scott was a real enthusiast of the 107026 (he owned several) and he had done an enermous amount of reseach into them making him something of the 026 guru. I had formed an online friendship with Scott due to our mutual interest in the 026. Unfortunately, Scott passed away prematurely a couple of years ago. The 026 forum on the MB Club of America forum at http://mbca.cartama.net/forumdisplay.php?f=11 is named in his honour. A search of that forum may reveal the info I am looking for. If I find it I will post it here.

Your new brakes look like they'll get the job done, even with that big donk you are currently shoe-horning in there. Keep us updated on progress.

The guys in Belguim tell me they can deliver 340hp for about 10000 euro.
Not bad but probably not enough for tarmac

i am going to dig into a supercharged 5.6
should be able to get 400+ out of that

they also noted another Benz blogger

he has got the flying Benz and some serious hp

I love that Liqui Moly 500SL. I've seen that before.

It seems to have the RHS headlight assembly missing in the photos?

These cars look so damn good in war paint.

I wouldn't over estimate the cost of getting an SL/C ready for tarmac rallying

there are 2 guys that run a very vanilla SLC in Targa, they have finished every year and now are in teh 10 year hall of fame
their car woudl be no where near as fast as where i am heading but that is just me can't do things half hearted

The biggest cots are the roll cage $7k, suspension $5k, brakes $4k, lock the diff $3k, and safety gear $5k
depends on how fast you need to go and how much you can do yourself

after i figure out about the engine i am confident i would have a SL/C that is every bit as fast as the .eu guys and probably half the price

its a mater of desire - there is always a way of getting into what you want to do

I'm sure it also helps to have the right contacts.

When is the SL next turning a wheel in anger?

the build is at

car is at the exhaust place getting a full mandral bend system and HPC coated headers
then the stall converter is still underway (2200 to lock up - no flaring please)
gearbox is completely refurbished and needs to be run in (works like a semi auto now)
radiator cowlings, alloy header tank and electric fans
bolt in ECU behind passenger rally footrest
get gear shifter connected
fuel connected

put in a bit of water and oil and fire it up (will get a video of that)

looks like we probably won;t make Mt. Buller but Calder Park has an open day on teh 11th so we are shooting to have a shakedown day then

I will try to get some more mechanical type pics for the board

Whilst I know there's no such thing as too much power, a search of the web (eg. YouTube) will return plenty of competitors running SLCs in rallies in Europe, both tarmac and gravel/dirt. Whilst the majority are probably 5 litre (026) and possibly developed to deliver 300hp or more (which seems to give them enough get up and go for their requirements), it's surprising to also see a few 350SLCs (023) having a run. I suspect the 350 are chosen because they were the largest engine MB delivered with manual transmission. The 3.5 being very oversquare (shares the same bore as the 4.5 and has a very short stroke) is also a lovely revvy engine but it does need the driver to keep it up in its useful rev range (4k to 7k) as below that it is gutless. I can't imagine any 3.5 developing much more than about 250 to 280hp (they were 200hp DIN net in standard form) and yet they still seem to do the job OK. There used to be a great video of a manual 350SLC rally car on YouTube but it's not ther now. The best I can find now is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYio6gJiWAM
