Heater valve/tap mod-completed

Post by Giles » Wed 09 Feb, 2011 11:34 pm

Anyone changed out there heater valve/tap with something non-original.

Mine is cactus with tears in the diaphrams . I'm working on something at the moment but was wondering if anyone else had had any ideas.

Regards,

Giles

Giles, is the price of the monovalve ridiculous? or is the valve OK but the diaphragm shot? Temporary solution, d/c the diaphragm and move the valve to whichever position you require.

Hi Joe,

The diaprams are shot but the tap works perfectly. I've been locking the position to off (no heat ) but last winter the temp inside the car was near freezing and the last thing I wanted to do was get under the bonnet continuosly to change the setting.

It's getting cold in the morning around here but the temp does rise pretty quickly so there for it would nice to have a heater to control.

I haven't tried MB Spares for the tap as yet but my local guys tell me that it's ex Germany and over $300. Apparently you can't buy just the diaprams, so I'm told. If I could it would be an easy fix as it all comes apart around the diaprams.

What I've done so far is to fitted an after market tap that has only one vacuum attachment and it's only on when there no vacuum i.e. when I remove the vacuum hose. Then it's off when it's reattached. I put a T=piece so the vacuun line would continue but as there's constant vacuum the tap won't open and close.

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Giles

Thanks for the tip John.

As mine is an early model SLC that has two vacuum connections an the actuator, I solved the issue of the new tap with only one connection.

I looped the red and green vacuum hoses together as they seem to return to the heater controls.

I removed the glove box insert to find the actuator for the fresh air vents and linked a T-piece to a piece of vaccuum hose, fed it through the fire wall back to the heater tap. Now the fresh air control opens the heater tap when inside car is selected and when fresh air is selected it turns the tap off. I figured I won't need fresh and heat, but if I do I'll open a window. And yes, the slider controls still function.

Ah, Mecedes Benz, engineered like no other but sometimes the OEM spares parts can be cost prohibitive. Total cost of the mod $42 inc tap, vacuum hose and 2 x T pieces.

Giles
