116/117 engine types

Post by Giles » Sat 06 Nov, 2010 11:56 am

I need some clarification with engine types guys. I have the intention up upsizing HP with another MB engine. I would like the option of replacing my current 11.982 with a 4.5 litre but also be able to retro fit it back later.

Here are a few qustions I have.

1) Can I use either a 117.983 from a 450SE/SEL or do I have to use a 117.982 from a 450SLC?

2) Does the 117 prefix relate to the block?

3) Does the 982/983 relate to the heads?

4) I'm thinking of purchasing a complete donor car with matching trans, would this be advisable and have the rebuild done over east and then having the motor and box shipped here for fitment? There are lack of options over here for donor cars. Does this sound the more sensible way to go about things?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Regards,

Giles

The only real differance between the two is the sump and the manifolds, both of which can be swapped over without to much hassle.
2) Does the 117 prefix relate to the block?
M117 relates to almost all of the major parts, block, heads, cam. Generally I guess it means the bigger series of the two.
3) Does the 982/983 relate to the heads?
No, it refers to what car the engine came from. Some versions had differant cams, some differant compression, etc.

Can't see the point of going to a 450, i would be going 500 or even 560...

Thanks John.

I was assuming that a 450 maybe more freely available and be more cost affordable. I guess what I' need is motor, trans, diff, radiator and the the big front brakes from a 560 donor with good mechanicals. Do any write offs ever come up? If so John can you let me know or put me on the waiting list.

Many thanks,

Giles
