W168 / A190 stop light from always coming on? (battery drain

Post by niest23 » Sun 24 Jul, 2016 11:30 am

Hi,

I am new here, it is good to be here. I have recently purchased an A190 or W168 model. I was hoping someone might be able to help me with a couple of questions for looking after the car please. That would be great if so ! Thank you.

I notice that the light automatically comes on every time I open a door or take the key out. Is there a fuse in the fuse box that I can take out to stop this from happening every time so I can save the battery life? I have to take out and put in the 7.5 fuse as sometimes the indicator and dashboard lights go, so I know how to find the fuses etc.. I could not find this answered elsewhere, sorry if it has been.

Also, does anyone know if there is a good tutorial or something like that around somewhere that will teach me basic good general maintenance needs for the car? Like how to check the oil, battery power (I don't want to get stuck somewhere it if goes dead, I would rather know when it is becoming dead, so I can replace it in advance) water, brake fluid etc...

I would really appreciate this as I don't really have anyone that is able to show me these things without going to a mechanic which can be very expensive. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
It is not normal for the brake light in the dash to come on without the key in the ignition. Other members here may be able to give detailed advice.
If you add your location to the member profile, members may be able to share information about good MB independent mechanics in your area, or even be able to meet with you to help you better understand your vehicle.

Best wishes,
Tony

Thanks Tony,

I am living in Toowoomba QLD. I do know of the mechanics here, the problem is it would cost me way too much to do most things I can do if I go there.

The light does come on automatically every time you either open a door or take the key out of the ignition. Which while can be a problem when you don't want to draw attention to yourself at times, however the main problem is that it will flatten the battery much faster. This is why I ask I am sure one of the fuses must be capable of coming out so you can manually choose when turn the light on. Many times passengers ask me about this too and tell me to find out cause it irritates them having the light come on all the time.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Just clarifying. Is this the brake warning light on the dash or the brake (Stop) lights on the back of the vehicle?
If these are the brake lights on the rear of the vehicle, do they operate normally when the engine is running, with the door open or closed?

Is it the interior light?
In our C class cars (late '90s) the lights come on automatically with the doors being unlocked, but go off after a time delay. Even if the door is left open, the light will go off after a much longer delay.

Please clarify which lights you are concerned with.

By the way, thanks for adding your location to the post. You can add it to your profile by following the [User Control Panel] link above. That way others will see it on each post you make.
Regards,
Tony

It is the interior light that comes on, none of the other lights come on at all. It does not happen when I lock or unlock the car, but the periods for which it stays on and goes off are the same as the ones you mentioned for the c class.
