Jolting GLE when towing

Post by robb443 » Sat 11 Nov, 2017 4:31 pm

We have a late 2016 GLE 350d which has been magnificent to drive and tow our 2.3 tonne dual axle caravan until last week when we hitched up the van and proceeded on our way for a short break. Within 50 km, the GLE went into a jolting gait on a smooth bitumen road around the 70-80 kph mark. It was just like driving on an undulating road surface. Upping the speed smoothed out jolting but it was quite disconcerting that we abandoned our caravan trip and proceeded without the van. However, at certain speeds, around the 100 kph, a slight jolting could be felt intermittently over our 900 km journey. Has anyone else experienced this and any ideas what could cause such a ride? We will be going back to the dealer next week but wanted to check with forum members as to their thoughts and go to the dealer armed with any information on a possible cause.

As you are probably aware, these contemporary Benz's are full of electronic wizardry.

For some reason you have probably thrown a code. This needs to be checked with a scanner either at the stealership or an independent MB specialist with the appropriate unit.
I have a scanner that specifically lists towing codes :dontknow:

Once you get to the scanner operator they will list the codes and history file and let you know what the issue is.
It will probably be something simple and a reset will get you on the way.
The important thing is to realise what the code is, how it was created and to prevent this happening again.

F.W.I.W. there are new cars out that that are forbidden to tow. - Too many nanny electronics trying to take over the driving dynamics.

Thank you for your advice, which is very reassuring if a simple reset can eliminate the problem. It has concerned me so much that I have actually gone out and test driven a Landcruiser as a possible replacement vehicle for towing. But I really do not want to part with our GLE as it is a great vehicle, which even after almost a year of ownership is still impressing me, apart from the jolting issue of course. I will get our vehicle to our local stealership next week for a scan.

Best regards,
