W164 ML320CDI [2006] lighting upgrades

Post by jubaeg » Sun 19 Feb, 2017 2:01 pm

I thought I'd post about my first mods that I've been [very slowly] undertaking on my ML that I've had since about May 2016. Its been bothering me for a while that the halogen headlights are so yellow, and that the interior lights are a bit dim (although considering how many of them there are, they do an ok job).

Anyway, after tinkering for a while I thought I'd make a post in case anyone else is interested.

I saw this as three projects:
1) interior lights
2) front lights
3) rear lights

1) is completed apart from under the front seats, glovebox and the small orange lights in the door handles and between the front seats storage

2) is in progress - today I had success in swapping the 5w5 bulbs for T10 LEDs in the parking lights. I see this as a major success as they are really difficult to remove, and I think I only had success today as I'd spread enough blood from my fingers throughout the area to slide through. No success yet though on the low/high H7 headlights or the fog lights (I'd like to have DRL instead of fog lights eventually).

3) no success - I bought some Phillips LEDs for reverse and brakes, however they all need a resister and so don't work out of the box so these are still unchanged.

Regarding the lights for 1), the majority of the bulbs are 37mm festoon, and it appears that 37mm is quite rare on eBay, so I've gone with 36mm and some fettling / bluetack. The ones that I used are: from greatcurrent-donald 4PCS Canbus 5630 SMD 36MM Festoon Dome 9LED Interior Light Bulb White 360LM 4PCS Canbus 5630 SMD 36MM Festoon Dome ... hite 360LM - so far so good, quite a speedy transaction and no complaints.

I also used T10 from the same ebay store greatcurrent-donald 2x Super Wihte 5630SMD 6LED Canbus T10 Bulb Car Dome Trunk License Plate Light http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321992442164 - these are in a few places internally as well as the parking lights.

Regarding 2), here are some before and after of the parking lights. It is really difficult to access this bulb and I needed about 6 goes at it (waiting for skin grafts to heal over again), and also needed long needle nose pliers, a slimmer wrist and arm plus an additional elbow, screwdrivers and lots of patience.

This pic shows the socket looking from the engine to the front of the car - from this angle it appears like you have heaps of space...

In regards to the low and high beam lights, I have an HID kit that is heavily referenced in one of the US MB forums. This is still a work in progress as the new lights don't fit the stainless steel collars that the hold halogen lights use to lock in, and so I'm still wrestling with this one. I think it may require the whole headlight being removed so I can see it as its quite an exercise in frustration doing it by feel alone.

Thanks for the great post. I think you need 5 posts to upload pics, its just to help try and sort through the abundance of scammers and give a chance to head them off. Clearly your not but no shortcut i know of. Respond to me here and just find a another couple of comments to make - hope the images become live then and not need reloading - clearly i am not the tech expert here!

you have the 5 - hopefully it won't take long to upload the pics - just edit the post and upload, place in line etc.

Thanks! It appears I've attempted to be too clever as I have the images in Google Photos and as it turns out, you can't use the IMG link to post images. So I've just edited the post to change from IMG to URL.

If anyone is interested, I could also upload as attachments I guess.
