Need some idea of what is broken

Got a very panicked call from my wife yesterday, while I was in Dubai and completely unable to help.

The ML 500 threw 'every light on the dashboard' said 'drive to workshop' 'do not change gear' and she was unable to put it into reverse.

It was also alarming which continued after the car was turned off.

A couple of hours later she was able to start and drive the car, including into reverse, without any warning lights or alarms.

Before I send it off to MB for their expensive recommendations to replace everything - what may be the likely diagnosis?

There is a plug on the gear box on the left hand side that will cause those symptoms. It may of come lose somehow. Check that first.

Time for your wife to get down & dirty and check that plug!

This is the plug. It may have oil or water in it for some reason causing the intermittent problem.
