2012 W166 ML350 Air suspension

Post by Jasmaz-77 » Sat 10 Sep, 2016 5:18 am

I'm possibly looking at getting a 2nd hand 2012/13 W166 Ml350. There are a few out there but would it be a big deal if I bought a model without air-matic air suspension?

If i get a model that has no air suspension and standard size alloys 19" will that be a nice comfortable ride?

I am driving a Ml250 with air suspension at the moment but it has huge 21" alloys and 265-40-21 tyres the ride is ok most times but can be quite jolting over bumps.

Opinions please?

19" are 255-50-19 cheapest quality tyre: $235

20" are 265-45-20 cheapest quality tyre: $254

21" are 265-40-21 cheapest quality tyre: $530 (only 4 brands make this size)

I dont know your model well, but tyre wall height makes a huge difference to ride. Tyre pressure will too but with '40' series there is not much to play with. Obvious suggestion is to go and drive some.

I have a 2012 350 but set up,on the air and 21's and I don't find it too hard at all on comfort setting.
I drove a 2016 250d GLE with 19's and no air susp for a few days whilst mine was been serviced last month. Honestly I couldn't tell the difference in ride quality but a big difference in power, my 350 flies in comparison and the extra grunt from the 350 makes a big difference pulling that big car around. So IMHO you are making a wise choice in moving up in the power source. As far as suspension maybe try and get a test drive of a 350 with both setups to see if you notice, or don't get too hung up and go for the best value well maintained car. If there are a few available to choose from the AMG option which I have gives you the air suspension, keyless go, auto tailgate and 21's heated memory seats etc. very comfy. Only problem with the 21's is they protrude out past the tirewall and love gutters :angry5:
Good luck with your search

We road tested a 250d for a few days when they first came out. It wouldn't pull me out of the loo - I'm buggered of I know why MB actually released this engine combination in Australia.

Thanks for the input everyone. Im driving a 2013 Ml 250D right now with 21's and air-suspension the ride most of the time is nice out on the highway and pretty comfortable except on some poorer perth roads and coarse-chip bitumen and expecially if you ride over those storm water grates or other small rises in the road. I not really into handling and it does not have to run on rails im more into comfort as i currently do 1250kms a week over 7 days. The 250 is awesome on fuel from the large tank (7.9ltrs/100kms ave)

Big difference between the prices for tyres for 19" and 21" when it comes to replace. I dont see the power and torque being an issue in the 2.1 4cyl engine it gets up goes and lugs around the 2150kg ok.

21" are 265-40-21 cheapest quality tyre: $530 (only 4 brands make this size)
Have you tried these guys? They have Pirellis for $325 and budget no-name brands for even less (I won't get into the 'you get what you pay-for' argument on tyres) - but it's a lot cheaper than $530.

Have ordered from these guys before, usually it's free freight. I took them to my local tyre place for fitting and balancing though as their 'recommended fitting partners' were charging a lot more for fitting and balancing.

Ok thanks for the suggestion, but we need to get back onto topic about the suspension not tyres.

I need to know if there are any issues with the current air suspension system and whether it will give me drama's in the future, or do i just get a car without air suspension.

Depends on how many K's and how long you want to keep the vehicle.
Early Airmatics are now starting to fail.
Be aware that buying the Airmatic components in the U.S. is buying less than half the price of the same product in Australia - including shipping.
I have a friend where his GLS450 airmatric front and rear have failed twice. But he drives around on less than adequate roads.

Any modern M.B. is merely an "I" product with an engine and wheels. Buying one of these contemporary vehicles second hand is a lottery.
