ML 270 CDi - capable of big kms?

Post by Jader1973 » Sun 15 Nov, 2015 10:56 am

Hello,

I'm sort of looking for a 3rd car ideally with 4WD, just because.

A 2003 270CDi ML has appeared for sale locally - owned by a couple we know to say hello to. Owned it since new, FSH, receipts for all work, rego, RWC etc. They're giving up caravanning so the car (and van) are for sale.

Looks like a bargain at $4,500 ono - I'd be aiming for $4k max tbh.

Only concern is it has done 387k km.

Are the 270 CDi engines okay with that sort of km? Is there anything specific to look for that should have been done at that sort of km?

Other than that I'm aware W163s aren't great but at least this is a facelift car so the worst of the issues should have been fixed.

Thanks,

Doug

There is a forum member on here (Brother_Benz) who owned a 270CDI and loved it.

I think there is also a common fault with the intake manifolds on these cars, there are some flaps/butterfly valves in there that can stop functioning and cause issues, but it can be fixed. Very common job for our forum sponsor MB spares. If you search on the forum there are some more details about this.

You are right about the post facelift, as joe suggested I'd be looking very carefully at the engine to make sure the oil is clean and there is no evidence of sludging on the dipstick or when you look in the filler cap etc.

Hi Doug,
As Pastelgrey has stated, yes I have owned a ML270CDI which I found to be a great vehicle while I owned it, however I probably paid too much for mine as it had a few issues and in the end before trading it in, it needed BIG $$$$ spending on it. I will explain some of the issues I encountered:
1. Passenger seat occupancy detector failed which meant airbag deactivation (common failure). Huge $$$ to fix at the dealer. I fixed this by wiring in an $60 emulator from ebay, but this is dangerous if you put a baby capsule on that front passenger seat as the airbag could then inflate in an accident.
2. Check all suspension bushes etc.
3. Intake manifold flaps were stuffed on my car, still drove without problem but they can break loose and cause massive damage to engine I was told.
4. THE BIG ONE - diesel injectors started leaking and made a real mess with black stuff coating everything. Super expensive to replace with lots of money for labour as this is an unknown quantity as they can become extremely difficult to remove. Remember there are 5. Plan at least $1200/ injector. Caution if you do this job yourself, the holes need to be re-tapped - swarf entering engine and if you tap too far can pierce water jacket I believe.

A great car if these things (especially injectors) are OK. I had some fun with mine at Flinders Ranges, but after selling it I often wonder if the ML320 is a better choice. BTW my car had around 250000km
Please look with caution as the repairs are more than what the car is worth. As with any diesel, keep up with maintenance they can go for many, many kms but is this economic???

Feel free to ask any more questions

These are no doubt the two big issues with these cars. And if you do not do your own work then expensive to repair. We have a ML270 that was destined for the scrap heap, lots of issues including a several case of inlet manifold failure and dead brake booster. Labour aside i fixed everything for $500.00 and it was fine until I noticed the black death on one cylinder. However as it was noticed before it took hold an easy fix with around $30.00 in parts.

I removed my inlet manifold and drilled out the hinge points for the manifold butterflies, then tapped and plugged them. Trick the ECU into thinking that the servo motor is still there and away you go. Can't even tell the difference.

All the examples of black death that you hear about which are horror stories are from cars serviced by mechanics who don;t check for it. Do 30000kms after it starts and you are stuffed. If you do a basic oil change and inspection very 5000kms you will be fine as you will catch it before any damage is done.

Thanks for all the replies. A lot of very useful info.

Anyway, it was put on Gumtree on Friday and had disappeared by Sunday evening so I'm assuming someone snapped it up.

I'll keep looking and see what turns up.

Thanks again.

Doug
