ML350 Bluetec 2013 Aircon smells

Had the car from new and love it except for an issue with the aircon with the dealer can't seem to get to the bottom of and they pretty much deny they have previously had issues with other owners.

When starting the car from cold the aircon is fine, if you run the car for a short while and then turn it off, if you return to it a short while later on startup the aircon smells, awful musty doggy smell, which clears after a few minutes. It seems worse in the hotter weather. We've had it to a lesser extent if the car turns off on 'eco' (which turns off aircon) when the car restarts.

Mercedes have had it back a few times, cleaned the evaporator by a couple of different methods, deodorised, changed the cabin filter etc but it always comes back. Their suggestion today at its B5 service (cabin filter changed again) is that it could be the floor mats.

Not sure if this is related but the car never drops water from the aircon like every other brand of car I've ever had. They have explained this by saying that the aircon drain has a deliberate 'restriction' in it so the engine has to be running to blow out the water. I've never even seen any when the car has been left running for a few minutes. They tell me they've checked all that and it's fine.

Gut feel is that it's water related, maybe stagnating somewhere.

Any thoughts or experiences would be gratefully received.

I have had a similar smell with my old cars (not in my 300CD - the A/C does not work<:( )
I thought that was normal, but have not experienced it in my '98 C250 or in my wife's Toyota Camry Hybrid either.

Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

'84 W123 300D replaced good OM617 912 with OM617 952 and enjoyed having good acceleration for the first time since first driving a 300D in 2002 - became engine and trans donor for 300CD Turbodiesel conversion. Now parted out.

Thanks Tony, I'd love to hear from someone with the exact same car, there's quite a few around, hopefully some are on the forum.

I had that briefly in my W211 but it went away by itself. And I now have the habit of switching the AC off about 3 or 4 minutes before I get home - as I recall they say this helps dry it out before park up.
Another related AC problem, common in Brisbane with the high humidity, is the W211 would get a patch of fog on the outside of the windshield, just below the passenger line of sight. My W212 does the exact same thing...go figure.

Can you remember seeing water under the car from the aircon, we never do. Every other car we've ever had does drop water from the aircon.

My 2012 ml350 would leave a puddle. Maybe get the dealer to check the drain pipe.
