Tell me about the G Wagen...

Post by Panzerkampfwagen CXXVI » Wed 20 Jun, 2012 2:56 pm

Sorry if this has been put up before, but I am considering adding a G-Wagen to the fleet.

I have sold my track car, and was going to replace it with the new Toyota 86, but in terms of what it does it’s not here or there (I have a weekend sports car – Supra, and my nice daily – 500SEC)

Which leaves me with the fact I don’t have anything I can take off-road- Which I find myself doing more and more.

I was thinking 75 series landcruiser.

But I am led to the G Wagen, being Mercedes biased.

I’m looking at the one on MBSpares website- 230GE.

All I have heard thus far, is:

- They’re amazing off road
- They’re horribly slow.

Can anyone else comment in terms of:
- Reliability
- Availability of parts
- How easy they are to fix
- Fuel Consumption
- Are the autos any good off road?
- 280GE a better bet? (G55 is a-m-a-z-i-n-g)

Just anything else that would help out a prospective owner. I want something fairly reliable, but obviously will be kept in good order without neglect. I don’t want to spend bazillions, but I am not looking for a 6k ebay special either.

Thanks heaps for your help!

Going out on a limb here, but if you go the G wagen, does that mean you are selling that awesome SEC? :king:

Why I do think the white AMGs look very very good... Alas, it's about 10 times the budget I have! If only I won that black edition lottery for the C63 Black :wall:

Starman: The plan was to keep the SEC, as it has too much character to sell... Currently on axle stands having all sorts of maintenance and goodies done to it

If you sell the SEC you will end up selling your soul with it! :pale:

Unless you are going rock climbing (rock crawling ) or entering the Fink Desert race, there isn't much point doing that. A professional Series G wagon will do anything the average driver wants and last for ever.

I think the moment I can get a non-AMG one, recent Aussie release, for under $70k then I'm in. They are just too cool.
