Disengage Rear-view Mirror?

Post by Christo C »

1986 W124_230E
Some time in the past the interior dome lamp assembly has been carelessly removed with the result that it's retaining clips do not grip the headliner (thin Masonite) very well on one side, so it looks crooked (not level) .... so I have decided to repair the situation and the best way I can see is to remove the trim on roof frame front.... now in my WIS I found a document "68-0400 Removal and installation of trim on roof frame front" which helps in showing how to remove Dome Light and Sun Visor mountings, but extremely unhelpfully just says "Disengage Inside Mirror" for the rear-view mirror .... and the WIS itself seems to be missing any information as to how that is achieved....
I can't see any mounting screws etc, so assume the mirror is simply "disengaged" by boldly reefing it away somehow, but in which direction ????
That is the problem!
Anyone know how to do it (obviously I want to reverse the process later...)?

I have not taken any of these off, but many other mirrors.

Could it be on a taper, so that it takes a whack upwards to disengage?

Re-installation is the opposite. Put it in place and give it a good thump with a rubber mallet. It may help if you lightly lubricate the latch mechanism.
