Got a tare on vinyl or crack on dash board?

Post by Benzguy604 » Thu 28 Oct, 2010 9:22 am

Gentleman good afternoon.

Back in 1983 when I purchased my Brand New W126 at my Mercedes Benz stealership in Montreal,I saw a young man in the car showroom doing a repair on a dash board,it had a very small crack on it :angry4: .I noticed that he had a very small tool case and it held many different color compounds to do his repairs. We started talking and he told me that he had a franchise called *TrimLine* and that all he did was repairs on dash boards for many different dealerships across the Montreal area.

Well 25 years later I recently found a supplier of these compounds are ordered myself a kit. :sunny:
The current W126 I own has a small crack on it near the speaker grill on the left side of the dash board. So I will be taking some before and after shots to show you how I did.
Here are a few pictures of the compound kit I received today.
Cheers

This looks interesting. I don't currently have any cars with cracked dashboards, but I see a lot of the cars on offer usually do have cracked dashboards and this usually puts me off. It would be nice to think it was something that was easily and cheaply repairable.

I look forward to seeing how you go.
Cheers,
Michael

Would be interesting to see what the finished results look like, especially on a textured dashboard.

Dash Crack Wars

Meanwhile the Armor-All debate continues. :boxing: However, I think I will give the vaseline a go.

Here's another interesting link that goes further on protectorants (including armor-all, vaseline and baby oil) and other general "Dash-Crack" info: http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/dash.html#armorall

Thought I might give it a try before the summer hits. Certainly can't make my dashboard look any worse!!

Question...............Does anyone know of any similar product here in Oz?

Thought I might seek out local supply 1st to see if there's anything particular to the Aussie marketplace.

Has anyone had any success with this ? I have a blue dash W126 - 3 big cracks. the local dash repairers are hesitant to give it a go as they say it cracks agin within 12 months.

photos anyone?

Meanwhile, I've been using vaseline on all three cars' dashboards for the past nine months and so far so good!

G'day,

Has anybody got any updated information on this subject...

I've just checked my dashboard "Vinyl" & the small cracks that were there when I bought the car (1998 E320 W210) back in April 2012 are still the same size, approximately 25mm each, just 4 of them up near the windscreen...

I knew they were there when I bought the car as there was an OEM/stealership fitted dashboard cover on the vehicle & I always lift these when I'm looking for a new car because they usually hide a multitude of sins (cracks usually)... The cover seems to have done it's job over the last 12 months or so as they don't appear to have increased in size or quantity, but I do have these cracks & I would like to get them repaired if there is a reliable fix available.... :read2:

I had a professional do the same job on some cracks in the vinyl dash I had in my 1989 Ford LTD back in 2001 & a few months later the cracks had opened up again so my faith in this process is somewhat negative, hence my reason for resurrecting this post...

Any 'new' info would be very much appreciated...

John...

Hi Sealion,
I also have issues with dashboard cracks and will eventually look into getting them repaired.
When it comes to that time i was going to get a quote / idea from the "Leather Doctor".
I think from memory there is an outlet in Wanneroo ( they come to you anyway )
I am not too keen on doing the job myself so i will go down this path one day ( my timing chain replacement comes first )
Hope this helps,
Cheers, Kanga.

Thanks Kanga,

I received your email message & it appears your post finally made it to the forum, good stuff!!! :bounce:

As mine haven't progressed in size during the past 12 months I'm not in too much of a hurry to do anything about them but it is good that you have someone in mind to fix it when time permits... :coffee:

I'll keep an eye out for your posts if you should do it before me but in the meantime I'll contact the "leather doctor" & see what the story is & any further info I think may help I'll post here... :book:

Thanks for contacting me, I was about to give up on anymore updated info being available...

Personally i use Aerospace 303 protectant, it is very good and provides UV protection. Another good option is Optimum Protectant Plus, both very good products and well worth spending the money on.

303 leaves a darker finish then Optimum which leaves a more natural look. durabilty is good with both these products.

303 can be used on door rubbers to keep them supple, also great for engine bays and can be used as a tyre shine.

Another good product is Einszett 1Z Cockpit Premium Interior Plastic Cleaner, this will even work on satnav
