1999 s500 amg

Post by Jazzville » Fri 23 Jun, 2017 9:58 pm

I have purchased a 1999 s500 amg badged mb but I cannot find any details that such a car was ever produced. Some say its actually a 320. It definitely had a w220 engine. Can anyone tell me where I can find details on this car. Also, does anyone have an owners operational handbook - the car didnt have one.
Thanks

If you post your VIN, I am sure that someone here can ID the car for you.
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

According to what I've read on overseas forums.
No real W220 AMG's until the S55 came out - post 2000.
AMG = S55 and S65

You may have a kitted up car.

Car Shine did these professionally - body kits - not the mechanical.

VIN: WDB2200652A050501

1999-07

Mercedes Benz Sedan

Thanks,

The registration papers don't tell me much either other than what you see above and the engine number. I am certain that the engine is a W220.

Thanks,
Clive

Thanks very much gentlemen - that is great service. The vehicle is in mechanically good shape with just 87,000kms on the clock but the interior has not had a good run. The front seats have tears in them which shouldn't really have happened with leather - one would think anyway. It probably spent much of its life outside and with the harsh sun in Western Australia, the window rubbers have cracked and will need to be replaced so I don't get rust in the doors which seems to be an issue mentioned in other sites. All in all though, I am very happy with my purchase and will now need to get rid of my old 300E which also is in great shape with just 135,00kms on the clock and in beautiful condition - the wife won't let me keep both. I love it and only use it occasionally adding just 8000kms in two years. Hopefully the "new" one will give me just as much comfort and joy. I will scout around for an ops manual.
Regards,

The main issues with the early W220's are the airmatic suspension and the electronic whizz bangery.
In the past the airmatics were horrendously expensive to replace when they went bad. These days costs are reasonable - you can even buy elcheapo Chinese copies for just a couple of hundred.
Because of our drier climate rust is not such a persuasive issue as experienced overseas.
However because of the same lower humidity and higher ambient temperatures leathermust be nourished to stay looking good.

If you are going to put your 300e on the market make sure you post it up here first. With only 135K K's I'm sure it'll be snapped up.

Re: 1999 s320 engine cut-out

Post by Jazzville » Fri 25 Aug, 2017 8:40 pm

Hi Folks,

The S320 has come up with a very interesting issue. It appears that when the engine is hot (not sure how hot that is supposed to be) the engine suddenly cuts out. It will turn etc. but just wont start. It consistently says that there is no malfunction and my mechanic has interrogated it on the scanner and no fault is detected. Once it has "cooled down", it starts beautifully without issue.
Has anyone experienced this problem with any MB and if so, what was the diagnosis? The crank angle sensor has been mentioned by an RAC mechanic who confessed not to know too much about MB's.

Thanks,
Clive

The crank position sensor is indeed one of the main culprits for your issue.
