Considering W220 - Running costs & reliability question

Post by anonymousmoose »

Hello all,

I'm just doing some research on the W220 sedans. Earlier 2000 models.

May I please ask what running costs are? Are they generally expensive? I've heard stories that windscreen wiper blades can cost up to $250 and such. Also, how reliable are these engine? The ones with 100,000km on them.

Thanks so much

I have a 2001 W220 L S500, it was well looked after and had 140,000 on the clock, drives like it was new.

It uses a little over 12.5 Ltrs per 100k, but is one of the best cares I have ever driven.

On the wiper blades, repco have their own branded blades for about $40 each and they are easy to fit, it took a bit of looking from one of the staff members and the packet didn't have the w220 on it.

One very expensive part is the windscreen, $2500 just had mine replaced under insurance.

If you have the time to run around and find the equivalent parts you should be fine.

Good luck

Thanks for this info. I will do some more research too. Still got plenty of time. A 2000ish S would be a more desirable car then an 06 C-class or 04 E-class but running costs are of a concern of course. Others cars I'm looming at are 05 BMW 5 series & 05-06 3 series. My wife likes Audi so an A4/A6 are on the cards but resale value is shocking here in Australia on them.

I recently purchased a 2004 W220 S350 with 121000 Klms on it having previously owned a W126 300SEL and this is by far the best Mercedes I have owned. I'm delighted I bought it, as it travels so smoothly and quiet. If you haven't bought one I can certainly recommend you do so. If possible I would buy one near the end of the series rather than early eg 2003 - 2005 as by then they had the bugs sorted. My car has been trouble free from new as I have a copy of all the service records

Les, did you buy it from the Oldtimer Centre in Marrickville? If so how was your experience?

Hi Ngruzevs, yes I did. I was very happy with their customer service and their willingness to make sure I was happy with the car. They answered all my questions, I was able to talk to the mechanic who serviced the car and they attended to the few items I wanted taken care of. I can definitely recommend them especially as they have a very good supply of Mercedes Benz cars. I particularly loved the paint and interior colour combination of this car. When I first saw the car having already purchased it, I was just over the moon. Now three months later I'm just as delighted with my purchase......
