CPS HELP!!!! So stuck :(

Post by dakotakten » Sat 25 Nov, 2017 3:28 pm

Hey all! 1996 E320... recently my car had been cutting out white driving... but only for a second as if you were turning the key off and back on real quick... when its idling however that split second is enough to kill the engine. so i researched on here and the most common answer was the CPS... so i ordered a new genuine one and replaced it after slight difficulty (had to kneel on the engine itself) only to find the car now cranks and doesnt fire up at all! so i put the old back back in and it starts straight away (still with the cutting out issue).. put the new one back in and same issue! SO i got a new CPS sent free of charge because they thought it was a defective new one. only to have the exact same thing... no firing up but cranks just fine! put the old back back in and BAM starts straight away. I have no idea what to do next guys any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Also when its idling and it dies a battery check error comes up on the dash but the battery is only about 6 months old... i still put it on charge and it charged for maybe 10 minutes and was done. cranks nice and strong so i know the battery isnt to blame...
AHHH

What a pain! I don't know this later stuff, but I would have thought you could hook it up to have error codes read and that might help. Thinking laterally, could it be something that has damaged the cps, but that short circuit enables it to still run... and why the new ones not working. I have no idea and hopefully someone on here is more familiar

Thanks for the reply mate... I’d doesn’t have a OBD2 port and I’m not aware of any other way to check codes on these?? :/ hmm!

M104 or M112?

The M112 has some diagnostic capability although limited and must be read by someone with a Star diagnostic machine.

M104's generally need to drop the starter motor to change the CPS successfully.

If you have a M104 then make sure the CPS you bought is for a M104 and not a M112.
Similarly if you have a M112 make sure the one you bought is not for a M104.

End of '96 was when the model changed engines from the straight to the Vee six. So....... asking for a '96 CPS without a VIN might just get you into trouble

For your consideration, I'm selling the MB Carsoft Scan Tool with laptop. Also includes EPC + WIS preinstalled.
It scanner works on w210's using the 38 pin port.
I cannot guarantee it will resolve your woes, but it's a must have tool (especially on 'modern' cars with electronics) IMO
See "Tools & vehicle related items For Sale" section for further details.
