About 2007 w211 e350 wagon car keys

Hello, I am a slight bit confused about whether my car key is a smart key or a transponder, or something in-between.

The car does not have the 'keyless go' option equipped, but the key does not have an actual metal key sticking out of it. It is also apparently not able to be started by the manual key(please prove me wrong) even though most cars with smart keys have a place for an emergency start. I am assuming it must be something in between by being using RFID or a transponder just solely relying on that instead of the key as well. If anyone would care to enlighten me on the subject.

I have also been told to replace the keys will cost $$$(one have them has gone missing), I am not sure if that is because it is a smart(ish) key, or it is just Mercedes, and most things Mercedes/german costs $$$ to replace.

If anyone would care to enlighten me on the subject. It would much appreciated

Hi Darcey, great questions you have here.
Your key appears to be a regular key for W211, no proximity so it must go into the ignition. It is NOT a "smart Key". Such keys should always have a mechanical key that is used to open the door if the key battery is flat.
The mechanical key is small, about 5cm long with a head about 1cm wide, and slides into the electronic key at the back, using a spring loaded latch to keep it in. Your photo did not show this part of your key, but I would bet it is there. The mechanical key may be missing, which is sad. Usually your key ring goes through the mechanical key itself, which is latched into the electronic key. Your photo shows a key ring, which makes me think your mech key is there.
I have previously bought a new key for W211 at the dealer. Prices vary from about $400 to $550, and the new key is factory matched to your VIN and will include the mechanical key. Mine arrived next day here in Brisbane.
You really must have two keys, in case you lose one.

Those keys are unfortunately stealership only.

Don't fall for the great auction site cheap keys. The coding must be done by M.B.

Don't feel too bad about the $4 - 600 cost. There are some every day marques out there whose keys cost far more.
Some imported G.M. cars keys are north of $1,000.00
I had to source keys a few times for my mates Rangie HS back in the nineties - the keys were $1,700.00 back then.

The are various shaped keys for various 2000 models.
Do a youtube search for your particular key. There are hidden methods for getting the emergency key out. There are also confusing ways to change batteries - again YouTube is your friend.

The mechanical key I discovered a while back. It is exactly the same as the newer smart keys for keyless go. But unfortunately I'm pretty sure there is no keyhole to start the car, only to unlock. Like most cars with keyless go type keys.

It is interesting that it is only dealer. Thanks very much for this information. Probably best to ask the dealer where we originally got it to see if they do it. Or the best place. Probably only authorised Merc dealers.

Was also wondering if anyone knows what technology these keys use. Is it RFID, infra red, a transponder or something completely different.

You can start the car the normal wsy, even if the key battery is dead. You only need the mechanical key to get intk the car. Your key looks like the new keyless go ones, but it cant be used for keyless go.
