Weak remote control signal???

Post by RuaphuNZ » Sun 06 Sep, 2015 7:36 pm

So, everything works on the remote control locking for the W210 E340. However, only if the key fob is within a metre of the drivers door  . If any further away, nothing happens. I changed the batteries in both fobs, nup, no difference whatsoever? Our W202 C240 I can lock/unlock the car from 20 metres away. For the life of me I can't figure out what the issue is here with the W210??? Any advice, tips, pointers please?
Thanks Ando.

Could it be that the receiver in the car is dying?

My wife and I have similar W202 C250 Turbodiesels, mine is and "98, hers is a '99.
We have different remote cases on our remotes.
Mine will unlock from 20m away, hers needs to be within 3m. I am hesitant to ask the $tealer$hip for a price to fix the issue, as I know it will be out of our price range. Even a good independent mechanic may not be able to do it within our budget.

John,
Do you know if this is an issue with other '99 C and E class vehicles?

Hi,

to my knowledge, there's a radio and infrared connection. The infrared connection only works when directly pointed towards the drivers door. Could it be, that only that is working? It's normally used to lower all windows or with an SLK you can open the roof (if you ordered the function) ...

Is it working in your pocket, when you're close to the drivers door?

Best regards
Thomas

Hi from my experience they vary from car to car theres no real solution to it. Does your car have the green flashers on the rear view mirror? if so the remote must be pointed at that and it will work from a fair distance

Gidday, thanks for the advice.
Yep the IR works fine. I couldn't see any sign of the green flashers on the car. I tried the pocket tip and the remote works, so I suspect the radio signal ,receiver etc is a bit weak. Regards, Ando

Did you get to the bottom of this issue?
Was a replacement key the solution?

My wife's car has a similar issue, so I would like to overcome it.

Tony

Try taking the remote apart and clean the battery contacts..some cheap replacement batteries are no good so buy a good one....usually Remote Keyless Entry are RF for distance (they work when u press it in your pocket)!! whereas the Passive Keyless Entry only work when close to your car (no press needed).... If all else fails,The Mister Minit key shops (or some key/lock shops) can inspect and diagnose car remotes much cheaper than stealerships.
