Advice on buying SLK230

Post by Tony T »

Hi all.
Been a while since I've been on here.
I'm down to 2 W124s now, one of which I'm giving to my son next week as his first car.
Now looking for a smaller car for my wife.
She really likes the look of a late 90's SLK230 but having never owned a Benz younger than 1988, I'm nervous.
Can anyone offer any advice about what to look for when buying?
And how disappointed will I be with the build quality compared to the 116, 123 and 124s I've owned previously?
Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom. :-)
Tony

Hi Tony,
they have a quite good reputation, but - still - they're old cars now. Imho I'd really look into the successor, the R171; the roof folds much closer together and - as far as I have heard from my workshop - they're one of the best MB's recently. Ours isn't driven a lot (around 60,000kms in 9.5 years), but really good.

Just the seats of the R171 are rubbish (at least for us); so I'd check them out first.

Still just great to have a coupe and a cabriolet in one car.
Regards
Thomas
