R129 600sl engine parts

Post by jockdownunder »

Hi,
I have a mercedes benz R129 600sl and I'm looking for a full set of pistons, piston rings and bearings. I was just wondering if anyone can direct me to where I may be able to purchase these parts.

Engine number 12098122002253

I don't know off the top of my head but imagine a supplier in the US or germany might be where you end up. Precision international in adelaide have an online store you could look and Euro car parts (ASV or something like that) sometimes have odd old stock stuff. Presumably you have already had a good look online. Also the same question put to say the Benzworld forum might be a good place to ask this question also. Good luck

Hi Jockdownunder

May I ask what is the background to your request for engine parts?

I am asking as my SL500 had a timing chain break with all expected resultant damage - so one option is to get the engine re-built..(maybe - not sure of cost)

Can I ask what you are doing with your re-build - and likely cost?

Did you consider a replacement engine?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Further to your question about what I ended up doing with the R129 600SL. Well after carrying out research and finding out where I could buy pistons, rings and shells from USA and UK I took the block along to the local machine shop. I knew that number 10 cylinder had seized in the bore but was advised that the score in the cylinder was very deep and could not be rebored as it stood. Also with the block being aluminium the bores would have to be bored and then sleeved if that was the road I was going to go down. The problem they envisaged was that there would possibly be an issue with different expansion rates and that the sleeves may move, or so I was advised. In the end it was cheaper for me to buy a used engine from a SEl for $5500 from a breaker. The only thing was it came from Japan and I just had to change everything over to a right hand drive, the sump had to be changed, the oil pump , engine mounts and I think that was it.

I currently have the car in at the local Auto Electricians trying to sort out their mistake. I had taken the ETC'c to have them rewired but when turning the ignition key the left hand ETC made a harsh buzzing and then nothing and the left did not make any sound. As well as that I have just replaced all the hydraulic seals and now I need to clear the ASR light which appears to be a very common problem with the R129’s. I have tried clearing the code but it just comes back immediately. I replaced the brake stop light first as was suggested on some of the forums and I will be working through the other potential ideas. It has been suggested that it may be the ASR or EGas modules but they are difficult to find and expensive if they are not the problem.

It has come a long way from picking the car up with all the engine parts in the boot and back of the car so hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel. I just need to keep trying to resolve the issues but it may be that I’m at the end of my technical capabilities and I need to find a Mercedes expert for assistance.

Not sure where your located but i know this guy Leon based in Caringbah NSW is an MB electronics genius (electronics engineer) and has all the bosch data and equipment to fix any electronics issue for your model. The only problem is you have to take your car to his workshop. Perhaps just call and have a chat to him.
