SL600 is history ...

Post by T-Modell »

Hi,

Just read an article and then had a look in the actual price list: The SL600 is no longer available, customers don't ask for it. They grab the SL65 instead.

Sad; it still had some classical understatement; now you either take the SL500 or the AMG's SL63 or SL65.

I have heard that MB have discontinued the V12 engine altogether. Its due to all this lower emissions and higher efficiency business. AMG will probably continue to offer a V12 as a niche item, but the SL600 and S600 and CL600 V12's I don't think will be available any more. Yes it is a shame. I think the standard V12s do have more class than the Christmas tree AMGs.

Well,
the S-Class still has it; it will be interisting, if the S-Class-Coupe (old CL-class) will get it. So far only S500 and S63. I don't think they discontinue the V12 as they need it for markets like China, Russia, Arab Countries etc. And the S65 is basically the same motor.

I even heard rumours, that MB and BMW might develop a V12 together to save cost.

Guys, I need some advice -

I have looked at a 1998 SL600 convertible in fair condition which the owner wants to sell, but yet to come to me with an asking price. It's got 70km on the clock and full books and service.

What are some of the main concerns I should be looking out for (basically everything in an old V12 engine compartment I hazard a guess?) and what's a fair price to expect?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry,
but in my opinion, the purchase price is completely irrelevant, as you need a nice big wallet for the costs afterwards. It was extremely expensive to keep on the road when new and it's still expensive to do that. Think of the automatic roof, all the electronics etc. Parts for a V12 are MUCH more expensive than any other MB motor.

If you have deep pockets and can do a lot yourself, get it ... otherwise look for something else.

Thanks Thomas, I suspected that would be the response but needed affirmation before getting myself into the proverbial endless money pit.

Shame as I couldn't stop thinking about it, but sensibility needs to rule on this one.
