I just bought a Japanese import SLK350 with Nav, DVD, Harman Kardon speakers. The head unit looks similar with the European NTG1. Is anyone has any info or experience with replacing the japanese units with european?
Will the MOST optical cable will fit the european headunit? I would like to have a decent radio reception and I am looking for solutions.
Anyone has for sale a Comand NTG1 head unit for sale? Or the GPS unit from the boot?

Having headunit problems on my 06 SLK350. Unit shuts off or reboots whenever it wants! I've noticed used units for sale on eBay and similar. Am I at risk of buying one of these only to find it's locked due to security codes. Is there a code I should be asking the vendor for?

I don't know about the code, but my 2008 unit (OK, different one) had a rare shut-off during a drive. Suddenly everything dark. Went to a parking, ctrl-alt-del (ignition off-on), and it worked again. When I mentioned it to my MB dealer, they performed a software upgrade next time, since then it never happened again. Hey Steve,
Looks like you have NTG 1 unit with fibre optic connection. They do develop some dramas in our hot country sometimes. Its a fixable thing in general and it may be most related. The eBay units will require someone with STAR diagnostics to unlock the unit for you and possibly a code. I only know of 1 place in QLD with C3 Diagnostics with Developer Mode which can unlock the new unit and then load the maps.
When buying from ebay europe you may want to look out for dodgy units as they will flag up at MB stealers as stolen. Moreover its good to prepared to have the unit converted to Australia. Some of them are easier than others. I had the NTG 2.5 unit from the UK and it cost me $1500 for the conversion.
