Price for an R171?

Post by Moopere » Fri 21 Jun, 2013 10:21 pm

Hi Folks,

I'm on the verge of buying either an '04 R171 200K (Nov 04, one of the first facelifted cars) or an '06 171 200K.

The '04 has done 120K km, the 06' has only done 26K Km.

Both cars drive really well - after driving the '04 the Km doesn't bother me really, it drives like new ... and in fact I've test driven for a week a 2012 SLK250 and aside from being a more powerful car the ride and drive is pretty similar, in fact, bells and whistles aside, all three vehicles are remarkably similar in their drive experience. Given this, I'm inclined towards the '04 simply because of price. This car will be a 'fun' car more than anything else.

The '04 asking is 32K + onroad (about 1200-1300), the '06 is 42K + onroad and the new 2013's start at about 95K drive away. A new car isn't an option for me because of price but I'm using it as a rough price guide along with redbooks to help me gauge apparent value in these asking prices.

Its probably just me, but 32K+onroad seems a bit on the high side. Certainly the redbooks guide seems to be indicating that a car of this vintage should be asking 22-28K, Km are on the lower side of mid range, so I'm thinking a 26K offer should be ok ... these are dealer (non merc) prices by the way. 42K for the '06 smells about right to me, its higher than redbooks recommends but the km are so low that its hard to gauge ... its basically a new car despite its years.

Despite other indicators though, I'm pondering if I'm being unreasonable ... there seems to be remarkably few 171's available in the market below about 40K$ and I wonder if this apparent scarcity is whats pumping up the asking price? If the dealer was to come back to me with a decent counter offer I'd probably go with it .. but he's sticking to his guns at the moment.

Opinions?

Hi,

the R171 facelift was in March 2008; we have a SLK350 from December 2007. Fantastic car, one of the Mercs with hardly any problems (my mechanic confirmed that). I don't know about the pricing in Oz, but if you like the car, buy it!

Best regards
Thomas

The second gen 171 are a nicer looking car, specially the rear end, plus got a boost in HP.
The money being asked for these are probably about right for a V6 model but the base I4 model should be a little less.
eg http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... 7471/?Cr=2
Basically they are a convertible sports car, so you can't expect to pay sedan prices for them.
They are also a nice looking car that seems to be popular with the boys and girls, which gives them a broad market appeal.

My advice if you are in no hurry to buy soon, is to make the dealer a low ball offer, basically indicate that you would buy that car at your price, bitch about the colour and wheezy 4 banger engine.
Another tactic that may work is to have someone ring you while you are haggling with the dealer and pretend that it is another dealer who has just offered you a good deal on another SLK.
This is an old trick that most experienced dealers know about but it is a gamble for them.

Thanks for the thoughts folks.

I know that sedan pricing doesn't apply to these vehicles. The 'redbooks' pricing I am reviewing is for the 04 R171 and beyond. Part of the problem is that I'm in WA .. I see a fair number of eastern states vehicles available from dealerships at more reasonable prices, mid thirties for an 06 or 07 model - its tempting to go over east, view and buy and have a vehicle shipped back. Am terrifically busy though and this would be an unwanted hassle ... however, have to be cognisant of the market reality I guess, if I want to buy locally, from a dealer, and there are few vehicles in high demand then for sure the price is going to be above market.

I did make the dealer an offer of 26K$ for the '04. I'd be a happy customer at that price. There was no immediate response to that offer from the dealer and a few days have passed by. I'm guessing that we're in a mexican standoff now hehehe.

Perhaps talk to Mr Green, apparently he dabbles in the SH Merc market, may know of a good one?
That 26k one, really depends if you like the colour combo and options, basically there will always be another for sale.

Oh yes, my mistake - bad use of words. I meant that it appears to me the R170 was phased out mid-late year 2004 and the R171 came in, which is _not_ a facelift as you quite rightly say - its a new model introduction.

This is encouraging to hear.

This is what it ultimately comes down to right? Like buying a house. Its fine to talk about 'market' value, but in the end, if you like a car or a house then just go buy it hehehehe.

Having said that though, as with many cars that are a little bit older, these early 171's appear to have hit the flatter part of their depreciation curve. At 32K asking its not terrible value for sure for a 2004, but add 3-5K$ and and the 2005/6's are available, then add another 3-5K$ and the 2007's start becoming available, even the SLK350's can be had for low 40K$, I even saw a couple of 2008's for high 40's. Last year (I think ... might have been 2011) they were pushing out some stock that was new or demonstrator from the local Merc dealer for $75K starting price ... geez, I should have picked up one of those.

I bought the '04 for a bit over 28K on the road. I think its a decent deal. Time will tell after I've driven it a while I guess. A remarkably fun car to drive I must say.

Looks like I'll have to get the centre roof console courtesy light switch replaced ... I spotted this early but the dealer didn't want the hassle - I suspect these are not a spare part, probably need to swap out the whole console assembly. Will chat with forum sponsor about it.

I like how the design of the bonnet/grill is inspired by the F1 front end.

Yes, I like the look of the car as well. I was underwhelmed by the closed plastic honeycomb grill on the R172 ... IMHO if you're going to have a honeycomb grill then it should have 'open' holes, not moulded solid - looks cheap and nasty I think.

Anyway - am going to zoom around for a few weeks just having fun, then I'll take it in for a proper detail ... the dealers just don't do a good job unfortunately. Am hoping I can pull some long built up dirt out of the dash and blacken it up a bit ... its looking dirty and has had its fair share of sun so its looking dull. Likewise the leather ... looking a bit dull, but I think a clean and some love and care should bring out the colour again.

If I can liven up the interior with a clean and polish I might also replace the fascia panels on the console as they're scratched and a bit worn/dull. Theres also a rattle in the roof mechanism when the roof is up ... I spotted this early and figure a tighten up and lube should fix it.

As an 04 200 kompressor its no speed demon, but geez its fun to drive. Sticks to the road like glue.

Like Albert Einstein said .. everything is relative. When I come from my station wagon and drive the SLK it feels like a totally lame car. But enjoy to drive it! You're right with the interior; quality is not good, already in the first year some "scratches" on the plastic occured; it's very sensitive there. Overall quality is great!
