Although I am a biased W126 coupe fan, I must admit that is a very nice 280CE W123.

Has it had a respray or is that the original paint?

thanks guys, I've been trying to work out the paint, it's a mixture of new on the roof, bonnet, boot and orginal in other places. It's by no means perfect and one of thoses things you notice when you wash it.

It was a present to myself when I turned forty. Something to tinker with on the weekends. Mark thanks for sending pics, hope to meet you on the weekend.

Hi everyone, my first post here.

I've been a W123 fan for a while, and decided to take the plunge this year as a 34th birthday present. I managed to find this 1982 230E with 31,000km on the clock... its owner passed away in the 80s, and the car spent 3 decades in storage.

I've had it for three weeks now, and I couldn't be happier with it. I took it to Alan Lennox and they did a few things like replace the engine mounts, fixed the faulty instrument cluster lighting and replace all the fluids so it drives like a dream now.

Only issues: The AC doesn't work (doesn't bother me because it's a weekend car), there is a bit of pitting in the chrome work and the temperature gauge is a bit erratic... but apart from that, it's like a new car.

Glad to be a part of the forum.

Great find. Just to be safe, I recommend that you replace all rubber hoses and tyres. After decades in storage some of the rubber is still 34 years old.

I wouldn't trust the lives of my family driving on old tyres, or the engine with old radiator and heater hoses.
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

Ah yes, I neglected to mention that when the car was taken out of storage, brand new tyres were put on the car.

And the hoses have also been replaced.

I was quoted around $2k to fix the aircon, but it's really not a priority for me - I won't be driving it on extremely hot days. Besides, the wind-up windows seem to be working great. ;)

$2k sounds a lot unless they really know what is wrong. They might be assuming compressor needs replacing, maybe it does, but for $150 or something like that you can probably find someone that can regas with a dye and you will soon know where a leak is - or it might just work like it did in my 350sl. Driers are not that much and maybe that is a good idea to replace. O rings on joints could be responsible. I am no expert but just thought i would mention what i had done that worked and can have a go for not a lot of money.

But congrats, amazing to find such a time warp car.

Thanks mate.

To be honest, I didn't really pay much attention to the AC issue - I just handed it over to Alan Lennox and told them to do whatever it needed to get done so that all the fundamental mechanical aspects were A1.

Speaking of which - the car is still on its original timing chain. Is this something I should look at changing perhaps at my next service?

I know Alan Lennox are really good and you get what you pay for - they looked after my AMG with a PO and I think there is a receipt for $3.5k for the climate control a/c work. But it still works many years later and they are the sort of place not to muck about with things and just replace stuff. And i get the a/c is not a big deal for you and i just mentioned as a cheap option you might want to try.

As for timing chain - I'm guessing that is an M102 engine - is it a chain or belt? If it is a chain I really wouldn't worry if it really has done that number of kms - metal doesn't go off from sitting around. Guides could be an issue though, i just don't know the motor. If it is a belt i doubt Alan Lennox would want it to leave their workshop I would imagine without replacement! Even on the V8's that have a reputation for destroying motors, it is not the cam chain that breaks but the guides and the chain tensioner can add to that guide breaking that then throws chain off etc

But i wouldn't want something to go wrong on my advice - see what others say.

It probably was - how much was it asking back then?

I paid $11,500. I have no idea if that's a 'good' price or not to be honest, but how do you really judge market value of something with such low kms and therefore unique?

I just know that I've wanted a really great condition W123 for a while now, and it was certainly worth that price to me.

This is my old girl, a 1977 300D. I won this at auction on ebay in 2015 without actually inspecting it in person first! Flew down to Canberra to pick it up and drove all the way home to Brisbane no worries at all. I really wanted an OM617 and this one hasn't dissapointed me.

In an earlier life, this was the vehicle of former ACT RSL president, Ronald Metcalfe OAM. He was a WWII veteran and passed away in 2105 at 95 years of age. He purchased this car brand new when he was over in the UK working for the Australian High Commission. I got a whole lot of paperwork history with it, including some service documents from when it was being driven in the UK and the shipping slip to bring it out to Australia by sea.

The body is no glamour, but mechanically it seems pretty good. It has quite a few battle scars and has had dings at the front and rear which have not been repaired very well in regards to the panel-beating. Looks good from a distance, but don't get too close! I use to care about that sort of stuff, and I still do to a degree, but i think driving around in a 40 year old survivor wearing all it's scars is a-ok.

Work done so far:
-All filters changed and fluids flushed and replaced,
-Valve clearances adjusted,
-Glow plugs replaced,
-Injectors rebuilt with Monark nozzles,
-AC system repaired (old york reciprocating compressor still working),
-Thermostat replaced and coolant flushed,
-New engine belts,
-New viscous fan hub fitted,
-New windscreen washer pump and hoses fitted,
-Idle-up cable cable replaced,
-Seperated, cleaned and greased all linkages.

To do:
-Check/replace brake pads,
-Replace engine mounts and engine shock absorber,
-Repair vacuum leaks,
-Get SLS system working correctly,
-Get drivers seat base repaired,
-Replace under bonnet lining

3.jpg

I plan to keep it all stock, chip away at cleaning it up and just drive it. My daughters are fascinated by the winding windows and they have discovered the W123 Hazard light switch, which they keep getting in trouble for touching, haha! :snooty:

Hello Everyone,

Here is my 1984 280CE, which I have had for just over a year now and has been a great ongoing project. Previously owned by an elderly gentleman who was seemingly dependant on various workshops to maintain it to a driveable standard for him. The body and paintwork are in quite good condition and has come up well with a good polish, however the cream interior was very marked and needed a good cleaning - many thanks to my wife!

Although it had a roadworthy certificate I found the brake pads were worn right down, the drive shaft boots were in pieces, the steering box play was scary, and the fuse box was from Chernobyl. On the plus side it had new tyres, a reconditioned gearbox and no oil leaks and no funny noises.

All these and a number of other things have been fixed and there are still quite a few "to do" items. Someone has "rewired" the A/C - so who knows what is going on there with those extra fuses and relays but I will get it sorted before next summer, I will.

This however is a very nice car to drive and quite rewarding to work on, as each job improves the standard of the car just that little bit more. The good thing about the W123s is the great source of information on the model and availability of parts either new or secondhand from almost any country in the world.

Looking forward to getting it just right.

Thanks,
Col.

Hi All,

Recently purchased a very clean 1982 230e in very good condition and well looked after 1 owner car that sat in and out of storage for many years.

Only 163,000kms on the clock and little to minimal rust!

All standard except for being lowered and some white walls

My 81 230e. Previously 4hecksakes. After sitting under the carport for a couple of years and only being turned over and run down the driveway every so often it's now in it at the mechanics' getting a little TLC. In particular it's getting some brake work done as I think the callipers might need rebuilding (the fronts erratically jam on after heavy braking). I've replaced hoses and done fluid change to no effect and am a bit time poor these days so off to the local mechanics.

In the next holidays I'm going to break out the MIG and repair the rust in the doors and try and chase down the failure point in the central locking. I've previously repaired the front LHS fender and replaced the front RHS side fender (with a matching red panel from a You Pull It!)

Yes, this one :)

1979 280ce. It was simply too expensive for me to fill the tank as often as it wanted...

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum with my '83 200.
I bought it as a cheap daily driver for my short commute to work.

They might be too big, WJB. If they are, try Graphic Converter or similar to reduce their size or resolution, or both.

Meet Hektor.
HektorFr.JPG
HektorRr.JPG

Hektor was offered by Alistair (ADow) free to a good home. https://ozbenz.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t= ... 23#p182276. Whilst I initially considered it for parts, when picking it up my assessment was that whilst it had had a few dings and been rear ended, it had very little rust and the motor ran fine. Most of what seemed wrong was just the typical wear that looking through this forum there are plenty of threads on, so it could put back on the road if wanted by someone. My eldest came with me to pick it up and I asked him if he wanted it for his first car. Whilst historically indifferent to my obsession, I suspect his relief at not having to schedule his car usage in with the rest of us coupled with economic necessity (particularly the BioD option) fueled his positive response. That, and his friends telling him it’s a cool car to have. So I drew up a list and set about bringing Hektor back up to scratch.

1. Boot wouldn’t open - Compressed air in lock line to open, new vacuum actuator boot (pun intended) as per Tony WestOz’s instructions - Leak was also affecting vacuum for Trans
2. Central locking not opening – fuel lock actuator – replace boot.
3. Had been rear ended - Rear tail lights (thanks PastelGrey)
4. Had been rear ended - Rear bar (Thanks John G)
5. Installed factory Hirschmann
6. Doors wouldn’t stay open - 4 x Door check straps
7. RLH door glass stuck - Replaced Rear LH Glass Holder
8. Rattling and vague gear shifter - Gear lever bushes
9. No reverse lights - Fixed reverse / neutral start switch as per Ivanerrol’s instructions
10. Trans would not shift up - Replaced Vacuum Valve + fixed boot lock to fix trans shifting issues
11. Wouldn’t start easily – replaced Glow plugs, valve adjustment
12. Wouldn’t idle nice – Valve Adjustment, Injector clean and balance, new engine mounts
13. Leaking Fuel – New fuel return lines
14. Leaking oil – Rocker cover gasket and then grind the stops on the rocker cover a bit to get purchase on the gasket
15. Rattles – Leaking fuel caused engine mounts to collapse, replaced
16. Key about to jam in ignition – Replacement barrel, rekeyed all locks to new key
17. No Odo – Superglue Odo
18. Clock stopped – Capacitor replacement
19. Leaking steering box – Had a good working one in 230TE wreck, replaced
20. LH Headlight cracked - Upgraded headlights to “deluxe” version
21. LH Blinker cracked - Replaced
22. Various dings - Full respray (all externals off including roof channel – not a mask up job) to clear out all the dings
23. Replaced various side trims with straight ones to match now straightened panels
24. Glove box refused to close – Reglued and added a screw to spring retainer
25. Worn driver seat – Sheepskin covers
26. LH Side mirror rubber flapping around– Replaced
27. RH Side mirror wont hold setting – Replaced
28. Front LH Toe In bad (chewed up tyre) – Wheel alignment and front tyres
29. Fitted DAB+ adaptor, Blutooth and 200watt amp to original becker to get the tunes
30. Front and rear speakers upgraded
31. LH Seatbelt would not retract – Replaced
32. Pressure bleed brakes

As you can see, whilst “free”, if wasn’t really when you take into account all the above. That said, a huge thanks to Alistair for the car. Fortunately, aside from the respray and wheel alignment, the rest was DIY and a credit to this forum for teaching me how to over the years. RWC issued and now on club plates to give him 90 days motoring / year.

What a fantastic story - you should feel like a paramedic who has just saved someone from dying! And i think smart the way you went about it, I imagine the respray being the biggest cost apart from time, and hopefully that involved a bit of mentoring and father/son time. And after all that my only question is - where did you get the DAB adapter and how well does it work? Does it tune into the becker via a radio frequency?
