Rebuilt OM617.952 market
I don't go on here often enough...
I picked up a 2nd OM617A a couple months ago. Had thoughts of putting the best bits of both together to make one good one, and do a lot of head work for a superturbo project.
Anyway, had the thought that since these are so hard to come by, maybe I should rebuild one and sell it off? Rebuilding these isn't cheap so maybe selling one would pay for the rebuild of the other for myself. Maybe if I included my 5 speed 711.113 gearbox....hmmm.
Would there be anyone even interested?

Re: Rebuilt OM617.952 market
An old mate has several 617's gathering dust in his shed. Some are actually new. They sit there because no one wants to pay the prices asked, and those prices are the same he was asking in 1998 . They are simple engine to rebuild so a lot of worn ones are simply rebuilt rather than swapped out.

Re: Rebuilt OM617.952 market
I assume they're in Oz. I would love to get a hold of another 88hp job or two if I could but oh well.
Shipping to Oz is gonna be quite difficult, probably not worth it. A one-off has to go through certain people and then they have to scratch their heads and work out if it was worth doing for them etc. Then I might get taxed for it. I'll look at it later.
Any NZ folk interested in a 617.952 then...

"Florian closing his doors ?"
Yes, over dealing with the public. Also because he was a little too generous with his time and with some people, so didn't make sufficient money - he never really charged enough. Add to that not enough people appreciated his efforts - too many took him for granted. Also because he was split in this time between fixing cars, and also dismantling old mercs to rescue good parts - coz he loves older Mercs and hated seeing them go to the crusher. Also because he was doing all this basically on his lonesome!! "Good help is hard to find". Also because he and his partner had a baby on the way and (now here!!) and he wanted time to actually BE there with them. Also because the cost of doing business (overheads) was too much in Bryon.
He's happier now - and I'm happy about that. The area has lost a fabulous older Merc mechanic.
He is a very fine fellow to whom I owe many many debts of gratitude. Love him - love his work.
His mentor Joe is still about tho' - also awesome work - but he's a little over working on older Mercs methinks....

Stupid overhead. He should've been able to stay in business there until he retired and passed it onto his kids who most definately would have grown up around these old benz's and would be sittinng on a gold mine in years to come when people will pay and arm and leg for parts and good workmanship on these.
Byron is so overpriced now due to tourism and faeces. Local kids can't afford to buy a house where they grew up anymore :'(

Rent is too high for everything in Australia. It's sucking the lifeblood out of the country. It makes everything more expensive as every worker needs to cover the rent for their own place
