rear end sag and clunk..

Post by 230ew123 » Tue 07 Nov, 2017 12:12 pm

with age comes the sagging arse and clunk.
after watching the american merc enthusist on youtubby,
My fist would be the sway bar rods to hopefully remove the clunk, seems straight forward..
Next would be the center diff mount.
I bawk a bit at the sway bar bushes as it appears the only ones which fit are the genuine and they are expensive pieces of rubber and appears quite involved..hmm

however, I can see Mr. Green differs with the American and I believe advises upon spring replacement..
Would folks recommend this as a diy with the special compressor (exy and possibly a lethal job) or get a pro to do it?

There does not seem to be many images of w123 rear springs being replaced..

humbly reporting, sway bar links is a piece of cake, and no more clunking, feels a bit firmer too. Cheap, fast and satisfying entertainment..

upon observation, the centre diff mount would be easier to access with the sway bar removed when doing the bushes, looks do-able..

but springs would be a major gig for me, unless I had the special spring compressor ..I think the merc club has one in the tool pool..anyone?

I did the springs on my previous S123 (SLS had been replaced with standard springs/shocks... :naughty: )
Scary but not difficult with proper spring compressor.
I was able to borrow one at the time.
They're also on eBay etc. (eBay item number:132220956988)
Even the indy Merc mechanics rarely have them these days so that's probably not an option.
Borrow from the Club if they have one.
