300TD Advice?

Postby Blacksmoke » Thu 11 May, 2017 2:13 pm

Hey Guys, I'm Daniel, new to the forum, :sign2:
I'm not new to working on cars, worked on many a shitty i6 falcon in my time, but I bought myself a bit of a lemon of a 300TD, just because I saw it and I instantly became obsessed with the body shape and I had to have it. The price was right but it was rough
Picked it up for $2,500, but the engine is toast and the front fenders are full of rust, haven't found any real rust I'm worried about, and in general I'm happy to rebuild what's there of the car, But the biggest issue I'm facing is the engine.

It's a 79 300TD with a OM617, original engine, 550K km Log book history up til 2003, use to be well kept, don't know what happened after then, but the engine is tired, has very bad Blow by, really noisey (Compared to how they sound regularly) so I'm guessing it has bad rings or scorched Cylinders.

Pretty much, it looks like its pretty difficult to get my hands on another OM617 to rebuild, but I'm also toying with the idea of buying a w124 300D with a OM603 in it and swapping.
Is it a big job and is it a pain to get through engineering?

I'm really just interested in building a solid reliable car.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi and welcome,

I am a bit of a tragic in this dept so can fully appreciate your falling for the car. I wouldn't get too hung up on a tired OM617, replacements are around. Because you have a wagon, you will need the variant of the OM617 with the SLS pump attachment in the head - essentially an engine, from a wagon.

If you are looking to rebuild an engine, why not the one that you already own ?

For an OM60x, you will need to make up a few mods - It has been done but I haven't seen any examples in Oz. The biggest issue is you will need to make up bespoke engine arms or create new mount points in the engine bay. Wiring change for the starter on the other side. Also, make sure you get the transmission as yours wont fit. Make sure its manual speedo otherwise you will have to change extension housing or speedo. Get the SLS / Powersteering combo pump so you can run SLS off it. Not sure about aircon piping ....

Hi Blacksmoke and welcome,

I know very little about mechanics as can be born out by the basic questions I ask the very knowledgeable forum members.
However, with their help, I have manged to rebuild a 79 300TD with 635 Ks on the clock so I would encourage you to seek their help, the forum members have been so helpful to me.

Yes, the W123s are a classic/timeless shape and I was recently given a gift of a book from the UK on the history of the W123s in which it proclaims that the W123 "Is the finest saloon car of the 20th Century" and I tend to agree with this.

Cheers

Hey guys, thanks for the responses, so I've decided to rebuild the engine I have, seems manageable enough, I'm located in the inner east melbourne.
Anyone got recommendations on good machinists in the area, want to get the block acid dipped, and planed. Probably have to replace a sleeve or two. And I've ordered myself a copy of the FSM. I will definitely be hounding you guys with questions, cheers

I will also be doing some remediation on an OM617, possible rings and sleeves depending on what is causing the blowby - new project in the wings. Am probably not far from you. Shoot me a PM.
