Winton 23rd August 2009 - Team W116 (PIC / Vids)

Post by SELfor50 » Mon 31 Aug, 2009 11:11 am

So a couple weekends ago the fellas and I got down (and up) to Winton for the FFCC vs HSCCV supersprint.
(that's Ford Four Car Club vs Holden Sporting Car Club Victoria).

W116 towing W116 - what a sight! 8)

Front row (L-R): SELfor50, Oscar, B13
Back row: 690SE, 450SEL race car (bogged), 280S race car, 450SEL 6.9

Oscar entered in Povo (the White, 4spd Manual 280S)
Ian (13B from one of the 'other' forums) garaged his W116 racer for fear of catastrophe, and his 190E turbo was in the shop being worked on, so he competed in my car, Ol' Silver - 450SEL M117
And Me competed in my car too. :)

Was a slightly overcast start, but the day cleared up to be a perfect race day. Not too hot, but the sun came out to play.

Scrutineering:

After My first run in the 450, on the in lap she seemed to be mis-firing pretty bad.. After closer inspection one of the terminals from he distributor (#7) was coated with some gunk.. so after changing plug #7 with no change then the lead and tracing back, a quick scrub and she was back out there.

Ian's 1st Session: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQkedWKagDw

Oscar then debut'd in Povo. And was seen chasing down a frog green Ford Capri. And doing a great job at it!
It was Povo's first supersprint outing at Winton Raceway, which un-fortunately came to an end 1 lap into the 2nd sprint of the day. The solex packed it in (I think it was the little plastic CAM that snapped inside - Oscar, can you confirm?) and un-forunately there was no spare carby on hand to do a pit swap. :(

Run 2 of the day was again un-eventful, but times kept improving.

Run 3 was my best (captured) run of the day, with my time improving by another second or so.

At the end of the day, Ian had pipped me by about half a second (in my own car  ) but, I did go out for one more session that we haven't yet seen the times for..... fingers crossed. :?

Turned out to be a great day, un-fortunately I also now know the life-span of the QFM pads. The front left pad's ran out on me on the last sprint of the day, and coming into turn one after 3 pumps all the way to the floor there was nothing. So I quickly decided to journed onto the grass on the inside of the track, flick the ass end around, then back across the track (through turn 1) and went a$$ first into the kitty litter.. I pulled up about 1-2mtrs short of the concrete wall... the Grass was definitely the best option instead of going straight ahead. No major damage occured, just a snapped tow rope when the hilux attempted to pull me out. They'd never towed such a heavy track car...

Yeah, pretty much it. If only I had brought the Holley and accessories down I could've had it swapped out without missing a session.
After defending the Solex for so long believing that many ditch them too early, I'm at a crossroads deciding what to do. The 390 Holley works but it's not as quick it would seem as the Solex and I'm not ready for turbo yet and everything I read says the next biggest Holley (465) is way too big for a 2.8L engine. The 2.8L is approx 170ci and the 465cfm carb is for 202ci or 3.3L and above. At the very least the 390cfm carb will be back on for next race but with a cold air intake as a minimum for upgrade.

Hey Oscar,

Ditch the Holley and the Solex and go with a set of tripple DCOE side-draught twin-choke Webers. That would look and sound pretty cool and should do wonders for how it goes. I doubt a manifold for such a setup exists but you could get one fabricated.

Greg, You've read my mind

I've had this urge to go tripple weber for over a year. Truth be told there's talk that it may not be that much faster. CraigB knows of a conversion on an M110 and there's a w123 on youtube with tripple webers that I'll post below but I haven't found much info on it in the past. But such a project holds a lot of interest for me due to it's challenges, particularly as I've wanted to do it all myself. This includes casting my own manifolds.

Although I want povo to go faster it's fair to say that anyone would question how serious I was about speed when I continue to drag around those chrome bumpers and iron brackets. But they look so good. Forced induction is the obvious improvement but I think it's overkill for my worn engine and driveline. Further weight loss (me and the car), better carburettion and custom headers are going to be my contributions towards a faster accelerating 280S.

This guy has only one more vid of it, on the track, but it doesn't reveal much. He's also recently uploaded a few vids of another serious w123coupe racer though I couldn't find any footage of what's under that car's bonnet.
