Inaugural OZBENZ NSW Members run...

Post by AMG » Mon 26 May, 2008 12:45 am

Have given the idea a bit of consideration-

Thinking about a Meet & Greet for forum members - swap stories over a coffee and lunch, and enjoy a day out in the car.

2 prerequisites:

1. willingness to participate, it's a bit of fun

2. a Mercedes-Benz (registered of course!)

The proposal is for a morning start, driving through the Beautiful Southern Highlands - route to be finalized soon. There will be stops for coffee / morning tea / brunch) with designated 'catch up' points (some of us like to enjoy the scenery).

The Date is not yet final, but to allow planning and maximum participation, the aim is for mid July. Interstate members most welcome. recommended accommodation venue details will be provided at a later stage when the route is finalized, so those from afar who would like to attend, may do so.

Interested parties should email me - a recon. run will be done in the next few weeks. If you'd like to come along, give me a buzz.

Joe.

hey, if they can make it up through the bells line of road, they'll have no issue up the macquarie pass or kangaroo valley. :P

besides.... it might be fun !

Joe,

In years gone by I have organised numerous club navigation, observation and economy runs in the Southern Highlands. It is a region offering great scenery and some enjoyable drivers' roads. You have already mentioned Macquarie Pass and Kangaroo Valley. Whilst you may not be able to include them all in one run, may I also recommend Jamberoo Pass, Kangaloon Road, Tourist Road and Old South Road. Slightly north of the highlands closer to Sydney I can recommend the road between Douglas Park and Wilton which crosses the Nepean River under the very high Douglas Park Bridge and the various roads over Razorback Range and around Picton. East of this area there is a great road between Mount Kiera and Wollongong. This whole area offers some of the finest drivers' roads within easy reach of Sydney (and Canberra). If the date fits in with my family I would love to be there. Pity the 500SLC isn't registered and it would probably be too difficult to get an unregistered vehicle permit for a run like this. Oh well, might just have to make do with the great road holding the 190E 2.3 Sportline offers. At least its manual box will be fun on those roads.

Greg, you're pretty close to the money on Jamberoo wy.

Mt Keira rd has suffered badly of late as have a number of roads in the area.

the roads you mention are regular w/e runs for me on the bike- err that was up until recently.

Mileage may be an issue for some people, so i was thinking about a loop where everyone interested can get to and from without worrying how long or how far.

I have a google map pdf somewhere here with the route marked & directions for my bike run. it's about 300km and that takes about 4 hours round trip. In a car it'd be longer,by a decent margin. i'm thinking about halving that - depending on response.

I'll try and get a meeting point close to the 'start' of the run- and we might have some meeting spots along the way to pick up those coming from other directions.

will update this thread tomorrow pm.

Count me in too, the previous mentioned Macquarie Pass, Kangaroo Valley and Jamberoo Mountain Road are definitely recommended, as are Robertson, Kangaloon, and may I add Barrawang Falls as a must see ( but dirt road ) diversion.
I will be away the first weekend in July, but if mid-July is still on, or later, I'll be there - in one or other of those listed below, probably the SLC.

Nat & I came back via mac pass and went down through there last friday - the road was fine, but wet. there has been some resurfacing on the overtaking lane but it is still not yet linemarked.

The PDF was too big, I'll create another map and upload that. late july might be the go, but may also conflict with other 'club' activities. Will keep you posted.

And I guess as an ex-biker you don't need telling the Robertson Pie Shop is a great refreshment stop too.
A great drive anyway, count me in!

Come on guys, you're missing out n some great roads down here. Decided this morning to get out anyway, and went up to the Highlands for a Sunday drive, a pie at Robbo' (of course) and came back down through Jamberoo Mountain Road and on to Kiama. Saw loads from the Illlawarra Vintage club including a '20s Lancia Lambda and a similar vintage Vauxhall and Bentley, several MGs and Alfas, Jags Mk2 and XJ6, then the Mustang club came through in convoy, as well as a few Morris Minors and Minis. Lots of good driving raods and spaectacular scenery, so lets show them what the Merc club can do........
I'm up there most weekends, but it's worth a trip for those who are not locals.

Looks Like I'm out until I can find a replacement for Schultz.

Stella is not in a condition where I could happily take her out for a sunday drive, considering she is missing her interior.

Oh well, another time maybe if enough are interested.
As I said, I am often around those roads anyway, but it is a great area for a club run, especially for those not familiar.
So what's up with Schultz then?
Sold, or gone crook?

Thanks for the tip off 420SE, I hadn't seen that. Hope it works out, even with that damage, it looks too good a car to write off.
If there is a way for the owner to buy back the salvage and get paid the write off value, it can work out for the good,
(this is quite common in U.K., and I saved more than one car this way) but if the car is a known quantity mechanically, with some structural and cosmetic damage, surely it is worth fixing?
Good luck,

Fantastic Idea Brian, How about a run through the Southern Highlands, meeting at Waterfall / helensburg, and picking up a few others along the way if they so wish? say on the weekend of 25/26 ? or even this weekend. I'm happy to go whenever.

I have a pretty good idea of the area, with places for stops and some optional ones -

Robertson (pie shop is a must) Kangaroo Valley, Berry etc. there are plenty of options. don't forget also for the northbound drivers the coast road all the way back via woonona / thirroul / bulli - stanwell park, then lady wakehurst drive...

up through the pass to robertson I know of a couple of backroads as well, not really bad ones, but some not perfect bitumen and one causeway crossing (small and a little bit of clear water usually flowing over)..

We could do it Rally style and hand out the map on the day, or for those interested, pitch in now and let us know.

Good Coffee is absolutely necessary though

Interested parties please reply to this thread.

this weekend or next, and possibly every month thereafter for regularity?

Thanks for the reminder mate, much appreciated. 8)

I may be ok this Sunday 19th, but the weekend after may be tied up.

Oz coz must be keen as there is a certain 2.3-16 Cossie and a left hooker SLC with 5 litre M117 that are getting to stretch their legs this coming weekend in the Jag Mountain Rally along with around 80 other enthusiasts in cars of varying marques. Obviously this weekend won't suit Oz coz or me but I'm always up for a drive on good drivers' roads just so long as it's not a weekend already marked on my calendar with a motorkhana or classic rally (or the weekend of August 1-2 when I'll be preparing the car for an Oran Park GP track day on August 3).

If you get the unreg permit to cover next w/e as well, it'd be a good idea.

Shall we aim for that, so as to give a few more people a bit more notice /lead time to arrange?

Chris, if you can't make it next w/e, we can try to sort something out this w/e as well, but I fear there may be fewer numbers... let me know either way

Joe.

Joe,

I don't want to stop anything happening just because I'm busy, but between now and that Oran Park day on Monday 3 August I'm a bit too busy (I've even got a state motorkhana championship round in there).

Here's a thought though. One of the car clubs of which I'm a member is having a Wakefield Park supersprint on Sunday 9 August. I'm not competing but thought I might go down to help out at a flag point or something. This may be an opportunity for a bit of a get together for OzBenzers from both Sydney and the "centre of the known universe" (Canberra) and anywhere else within a few hours of Goulburn. It would also be of interest to those a bit keen on performance cars and club motorsport. Those travelling from Sydney could enjoy the great roads in the Southern Highlands on the way. I may drive from Sydney down to my parent's place in the Highlands on the Saturday for an overnight stay making for a shorter drive to Goulburn on the Sunday morning. Is anyone up for either a drive in the Southern Highlands on the afternoon of Saturday 8 August, or a meeting at Wakefield Park near Goulburn on Sunday 9 August, or both (which would require an overnight stay in either the Highlands or Goulburn)?

As for the unregistered vehicle permits, they can only be obtained for a specific journey or event. A rally on one weekend is OK but it wouldn't be possible to have one permit cover separate events on different weekends, and especially not just for an informal drive. I have obtained a permit for the Mountain Rally this weekend and another to go to the Oran Park track day. For an OzBenz get together I'll just have to take something else (the 2.3 Sportline is always fun on the roads in the Highlands).

Hi Joe,

Can bring the 2.3-16 to Goulburn on 9/8/09. The Supersprint is supposed to be a reasonable day . Wakefield has plenty of room in the carparks for a meet. Any starters for Wakefield? It is an easy run to Goulburn.

Brian,

Sounds like a great Idea.

Who's in?

The route is planned (click on the links below) and since it's not far from Canberra, perhaps we can get a few of the 'Support Crew' to come up and meet for a chat etc.

Please mark your attendance.

Departure time from Waterfall approx 0730hrs (to be finalized) and approximate meeting times @ Dapto & Robertson to be finalized in accordance with an average time calculation for travel.

Don't turn up late. the departure times will be strictly adhered to. Contact numbers will be distributed at the start @ waterfall, for those travelling, for group safety.

Meeting @ Waterfall, Waterfall to Dapto route then Dapto Mobil (fowlers Rd / Princes Hwy) dapto to robertson route Meet & assembly point @ Robertson Pie Shop, then straight through to Wakefield Park Robertson to Wakefield Park route

Some things to consider:

FUEL: Make sure you have close to a full tank before departing Waterfall. There are plenty of choices for last- minute fuel @ engadine & heathcote.
There is no 98RON in Robertson. the BP has only 95. (it's rural after all, ok?)
There is a Shell just across the road a bit from the Dapto Mobil, if you feel that way. The Mobil always has 98RON (bikes + macquarie pass = good fuel)

Your next choice for fuel is on the Hume Hwy, there is a BP @ Marulan, and from memory, a caltex and shell not too far either side of this location. (I always use the BP, sorry)

the Paragon Cafe @ Goulburn is a great place to have a meal, and the coffee is also good. It can get busy on weekends (you've never been a tourist before???) so be a little patient, they are lovely people, and the prices are very reasonable.

Wakefield Park: the Thornleigh Car Club is having a Private Event on this day, So if you are not a Member of this club, we request that you respect the Thornleigh Car Clubs privacy and patronage of the circuit. Lunatic behaviour is not welcome, nor tolerated.
Usage of the track by non-members will not be catered for without prior arrangement with Thornleigh Car Club, including membership fees and track fees plus safety inspection of your vehicle prior to the event.
Don't turn up and expect to run some hot laps if you are not a member of the Thornleigh Car club. This is a fair call, and I'm sure OZBENZ forum members both understand and respect these rules.

Hi Joe,

Obviously I'm in. Whilst it means I'll miss some good parts of the drive, I'll most likely stay Saturday night in the Southern Highlands so will either meet you along your route (say around Moss Vale) or meet you at Wakefield. Had your route from Robertson been via Kangaloon Rd or Tourist Rd rather than the Illawarra Hwy, I would be very tempted to meet you at Robertson

Regarding Thornleigh Car Club's Wakefield Park Supersprint, it's not entirely a private event. It is open to any NSW, ACT or Victorian CAMS affiliated car club member who has a CAMS Level 2S licence as a minimum. Details (including supplemetary regulations and entry form) can be found at http://www.thornleighcarclub.org/tcc.ne ... s=68&c=306 . For anyone who wants to see just one type of event that motorsport clubs such as Thornleigh Car Club run, this is an ideal opportunity. As Joe says, it will not be possible to simply turn up and have a run, but turning up to spectate is fine. To learn more about Thornleigh Car Club see http://www.thornleighcarclub.org . I have enjoyed being a member of TCC for over 30 years and have found it to be a very well run motorsport club. As is the case with any CAMS affiliated club these days, membership of TCC will entitle you to entering events run by most other CAMS affiliated clubs.

I look forward to meeting up with a few OzBenzers on the day.

Cheers,
Greg

I just noticed the poll at the top of this thread -- and had to vote "too far away".

But while there, I noticed that one of the voting options was:

"I'm too busy, and / or have antisocial tendencies".

That brought out the pedant in me.

I should hope, amongst the civilised lot that inhabit this forum, none of us could be described as antisocial. I'm sure that what was meant was "unsociable" -- meaning "not inclined to society or companionship", "not needing the company of others".

Traditional, accepted definitions of antisocial include:

* actions described as impulsively aggressive, sometimes violent, that do not comply with established social and ethical codes

* hostile to or disruptive of normal standards of social behaviour

* opposed to social order or the principles of society

* antagonistic, hostile, or menacing

* criminal behaviour or conduct that violates the rights of other individuals

* criminal or destructive behaviour.

Surely that describes none of us?

There is a creeping tendency for people to mis-use antisocial when they mean "unsociable" -- a regrettable move, as it dilutes and clouds the sense of a perfectly good word when we already have a well-established word for "not sociable". People who try to justify such mis-use often claim "But it's in the dictionary so it must be okay to use that way". Yes -- some modern descriptivist dictionaries contain entries with the "unsociable" definition for antisocial, but this is because descriptivist dictionaries only describe usage as it happens (hence the term "descriptivist"); they do not necessary prescribe only the "correct" definitions; strictly defining dictionaries are "prescriptivist".

Okay, soapbox put away now. ;-)

Any more starters for this run and get-together? Where are the OzBenzers from Sydney, the Illawarra and South Coast, the Southern Highlands, the Southern Tablelands and of course the home of the forum sponser, the ACT? How about the Team W116 guys who enjoy their motorsport? Having enjoyed a previous informal OzBenz get-togther when CraigB visited Sydney to pick up his AMG 500SEC, I can advise they are an enjoyable way of putting faces to the names on the forum. I know if Craig was a bit closer than Adelaide he'd be up for it.

Cheers,

Sunday the 9th?
So I guess you would be at Dapto around 8.30?
A couple of things to do first, one is convince 'er indoors I can get the day off to go for a drive, secondly, I have to fix the reason the heater is stuck on hot on the passenger side, so I hope to get in and under to sort that this week,.
Any clues gratefully received - it blows hot whatever position the controls, it is fine on the driver's side, hot, cold or air-con, just the left side vents are permanently hot - could it be vacuum controls or hoses, or flaps stuck?
I will see if I can get at the controls, flaps etc.
It has only been doing this recently.
Of course if I come on my own, it might not matter anyway!

GreaseMonkey,

It would be great to see you come along. JoeB should be better able to advise on expected time through Dapto. With regards to your heater issues, is the car in question your SLC? If so, post a separate topic on the 107 board as I have recently dealt with a similar issue and would be happy to pass on my experiences.

Just tonight I have been speaking to the Clerk of the Course for the TCC Wakefield Park Supersprint next Sunday and he has asked that Oz Coz and I help out on a flag point after lunch. This works well as it means our morning is free to get together with any OzBenzers who come along. He has also said that any visitors are very welcome to spectate and wander around the pits for a close look at the cars.

Hope to see some MB and motorsport enthusiasts there.

Cheers,
Greg

I am just taking the SLC to my trusted mechanic to get the heater control looked at, if he can't see a quick fix I may have to leave it with him, hopefully get it done by the weekend. I may be short of time on Sunday, but if the car is ok, I will try to get a bit of a drive even if I can't stick around later.

Damn... Never realised there was going to be a visit as far as wakefield. I would have entered for the supersprint over the hillclimb. Too late though, entry's in. :(

Can't make it un-fortunately..

You going to put Stella out on the track??

Cam,

TCC run a Wakefield Supersprint every year. Maybe for next year we can get several OzBenzers to have a run and even for those who don't want to have a run it can still be a social get together as we are doing this Sunday.

Sorry cam, Stella is up on blocks.

Those who are planning on coming along, please send me an email with your mobile phone contact you will be carrying on the day. - click on the email link below my name --->>>

or mailto:joeb@ozbenz.net

time leaving Waterfall 0730hrs SHARP. We really need to get going by then, as the planned route will take about 1 hour, allowing for traffic.

If you miss the waterfall departure, SMS me and go straight on to Dapto via the F6, meeting @ the mobil. We will wait here a bit for people and for fuel, before moving along.

If you need reminding of the route:

We may detour via Kangaloon rd after stopping @ Robertson Pie shop, if everyone is agreeable. There is an alternative to take a detour via pearsons lane, which has some fantastic twisties, if we have time. it will be decided on the day.

It all depends on what time people arrive, and when everyone wants to be at Wakefield park.

Please let me know of your willingness to attend before 5pm Friday.

All good... hopefully I can jump on the event next year, and you peeps can see a real 116 racer in action. ;)

I'll post a bunch of video / pics from the hillclimb in the SE 6.9. Look forward to seeing a bunch of happy snaps (and maybe some highway drags - purely talking about cars here people) after the cruze.

Joe, get stella of blocks, come down to canberra.. and we can have a burnout comp!
Seriuosly though, be good to co-ordinate a supersprint with a few other MB's attending.

Cam,
It is sounding like more and more MB owners are getting a bit interested in a bit of motorsport. What a pity we are not all geographically located a bit closer together. For any in Sydney with a bit of a desire for some motorsport, I am happy to introduce you to Thornleigh Car Club (see their website for details about their variety of events). For those who would prefer weekends driving great drivers' roads in classic car rallies following either simple route instructions or using more challenging navigation, I am happy to introduce you to the Classic Rally Club. At the very least, it would be good to see a day each year at a club motorsport event at somewhere like Wakefield well attended by MB owners.

Joe,
If everyone wants to use Pearson's Lane I am happy to meet you all at the pie shop if you are planning a stop there. Also, if using Pearson's Lane and then traveling through Exeter, why not continue on down through Bundanoon and Wingello towards Marulan rather than heading out to the boredom of the highway at Sally's Corner? Time wise there is little in it. Oz Coz and I aren't needed officially at Wakefield until lunch time so we have the morning to get ourselves there and have a bit of a look around at everything and chew the fat.

We intend to meet up at Robertson pie shop then go on to Wakefield. After sampling the secondary roads set for the Jaguar Mountain Rally - a truly excellent event - the route suggested will be a welcome change from the Hume Highway top gear cruise.

Hi, well somebody is coming over this morning to check out the SLC. If he buys it, well hey, it is gone.
If not, I may take it for a run tomorrow morning. As we have to be in Kiama at lunchtime I can't get to Wakefield, but I may still run up to Robbo for a pie if I can.

Results sheet

Greg, Brian and myself flagged @ the bustop ( turn 8 ) for the afternoon. There were some really amusing times. Greg took some video of many afternoon session runners, and there were a few off's.
the funniest cars were messers. Lout and Lout Jr in their VL commodore wagon - truly out of shape for most of the track, but not enough to be drifting.

The purpose of the day for many was to get out and have fun. I think everyone did, and some put in very respectable times.

Of the seriously quick cars, the Evo 9 laid down a 1.04 lap and pretty much after that a lot of people packed up, realizing they wouldn't get near it. Those who stayed out had a great afternoon. The most notable for me, were the Black RX4 of Andrew Horler and the purple VY SS ute of Aaron Hoad, who were about the tidiest and most consistent drivers of the session.

The most painful vehicle to watch was a Volvo 142s, minus the rear bumper (to save about 400 pounds and shave seconds of his lap times) who literally almost came to a dead stop lap after bloody lap, right in front of us at the bustop. Ellen Jenkins in her #7 blue Nissan Pulsar, a dead stock car, was doing a far better effort and showed good skills throwing the little hatchback around the track. It looked like it was her first time out on the track, and her effort was quite good.

The 'Tokyo Taxi' - yellow Nissan Skyline with a 5ltr v8 shoehorned provided spectacular action lap after lap, hounding many much more expensive and professionally fettled machines. Mark King, the driver looked to be getting quite an aerobic workout behind the wheel. some stiffer roll-bars and he'll be a prime contender for the wakefield Drift King title.

John Morrison in a black (or very dark blue metallic) Toyota Supra was one of the quietest cars on the track - and one of the consistently accurate and quickest through turn 8.

Many 4x4 'rally' cars (WRX's Evo's etc) did not drive as well as perhaps they hoped, but also provided a lot of tyre-squealing and late-braking fun coming into the turn.

The drive down was fun. I had to open the taps on Lurch after dawdling through a bunch of 50 zones, and the car developed a miss. once out of Tallong, I overtook a silver people mover (mobile roadblock) and found myself foot buried and rapidly approaching a nasty dip in the road. I simply saw it and laughed, kept it nailed, and the suspension compressed completely, scraped something and I was airborne out the other side. I had to laugh, and it certainly cleared the engine out.

That was about the only hell-raising moment for me. Poor Greg & Brian got stuck behind the people-mover and had to brake hard for the dip to save the spoilers on their Sportline & Coswoth respectively.

Hoping to have another run with a few more participants soon, as the roads were fun, relatively traffic free and the weather was great.

The wife, kids and I stayed Saturday night in Bowral so Sunday morning I enjoyed a nice drive via Tourist Road across to the arranged meeting point at the Roberston Pie Shop. Following a coffee there, Brian's wife liked the idea of spending the day with my wife in the shops at Bowral (yeah, sounds expensive, I know) so we all headed back there via Kangaloon Road. A good start to the day with two of my favourite roads enjoyed courtesy of the great W201 Sportline chassis. Obviously going back via Bowral meant we didn't get to enjoy Pearson's Lane but Kangaloon Rd made up for that. From Bowral the route south was via Moss Vale, Sutton Forest, Exeter, Bundanoon, Penrose, Wingello and Tallong so as to avoid the boredom of the Hume as much as possible.

Our late morning arrival at Wakefield Park allowed a bit of time for spectating and lunch before heading out to our flag point. Fortunately, for this time of year, it was moderately warm and it wasn't until later in the afternoon with a bit of cloud cover that it started getting cool. We were however well prepared as Wakefield has a reputation of being able to be bitterly cold in its exposed location. Manning a flag point certainly allows a great vantage point for viewing the action. Joe has already given a run down of some of that action. As always, the quick times didn't always look to be as they were neat and tidy. The spectacular driving displays weren't often fast but certainly entertaining. Like Joe, I was impressed with the clean fast lines of the Commodore SS ute and I was also impressed by the flat cornering of the little Proton Satria GTi which translated into fast times. Obviously the Lotus input to the suspension tuning of that car worked to its benefit. Results were somewhat surprising with some of the more expensive and exotic cars not featuring as far up the results as expected and other well, err, less expensive and exotic cars turning out much faster times than they had any right to! I suspect this has a lot to do with what the owner stands to lose if it all goes horribly wrong! At least at Wakefield there isn't too much to hit although there is always the worry of an off-track excursion seeing the tyres dig in and finishing with the shiny side down. I know at the recent track day at Oran Park (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=8685 ) I was reluctant to explore the limits of the 500SLC knowing that an argument with Oran Park's concrete walls would see me having to replace a car of which there is not an abundance in Australia (ie. mine and one other).

An enjoyable day out. Hopefully next time we can get a few more OzBenzers along. If it's an event like Wakefield hopefully we can also get a few MBs featuring in the results.
