Retro-Radio pimped - another useless Project ...

Post by T-Modell » Sun 14 Aug, 2016 12:13 am

Hi down under,

just wanted to introduce you to my latest project ... I worked on it for the last 4 months.

One warning at the start: This project makes no sense, it's of the type "why does a dog lick his balls?" ... because he can ...

So what's it about? I wanted a retro radio for my pickup project. Well I could have bought a Becker Mexico Retro or a modern retro radio or an original Becker with an AUX-Input ... no no no, much too easy!

When I was young  I saved up quite some time as a student to be able to afford a Blaupunkt Nashville R24 for my first VW Polo:
Image
Autoreverse, Cassette Program Search ... that wasn't too bad for those days!

So the thought was in my head to modify such a radio with the following requirements
  • Radio function as it is
  • MP3 Player with a memory card and a random function
  • Up-to-date power supply
  • Cinch-jacks for an external amplifier (internal 2x5W aren't too impressive)
So I got one at Ebay (two more should follow) and started. Done the following:
Firstly removed the cassette part:

Image
  • Replaced the DIN-Power-Block; rearranged the built-in capacitors and coils as well as the fuse on a separate circuit board
  • Replaced the DIN-Preamp by Cinch-jacks
Image
  • Complete circuit board layouts and wiring diagrams bought on Ebay (a full 4 Euros)
  • With the help of a HW-developer I found the connecting points in the circuit diagram, where the MP3-Player should be connected
  • Changed the front lights to LED (white)
  • MP3-Player (Velleman) bought. Reason: all 7 buttons can be connected externally, SD-Card, small Display (Photo shows already modifications)
Image

Next Problem: How to get the MP3-Player in and - especially - mounted? And the Display into the cassette slot? And the SD-card slot into the front?

Solution: Finally found a reason to buy a 3D-Printer and I experimented quite a bit ... here some samples:
Image

Further Modifications:
  • Connecting plug for the MP3-buttons was on the wrong side: resoldered and bent
  • Rebuilt SD-card slot, i. e. by means of an extended ribbon cable; added a slot into the front cover
Image
  • Disassembled and rebuilt all radio buttons, so that the buttons are working in a tip-function. All buttons insulated on the main circuit board and soldered cables to it. The "Mono-button" now switches between Radio and MP3.
Image
  • Installed micro switches, so that the "fast forward/backwards"-buttons now operate "Track forward/backwards" and the Autoreverse-button works as "Play/Pause"
  • Desoldered the SMD-LED's of the MP3-Player; unfortunately not enough output voltage for normal LED's: installed two Relais, which then switch the 3mm-LED's (with a 470Ohm resistor). So now the green LED is the "Play-LED" and the red LED at the front is the "Random"-LED
Here some photos in-between:
Image
Image

So and finally it was finished ... here the bottom:
Image

here you can see the micro-switches:

And put together:

Connectors at the back:

and the final result:

The housing and the cassette holder had to be modified significantly. One circuit board I fxyxed up and I finally used the parts of 3 Blaupunkts. Just the best front cover and the best knobs. Now a duration and rattle test ... then my special-Retro-Radio is done!

Hats off to all who read up to here :laughing6:

I'm impressed Thomas..... and i get it! Soon after i started work (about 1980) and suddenly it seems you have all this cash, I read about a 'concorde' car stereo in a car magazine that sounded pretty cool in an article about the 'first high end car stereo'. Then some time later near work i saw one in the window of a store marked down (too expensive for any sensible person to buy!) and so i bought it. It looks something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Concord-Shaft-A ... 1796578656

That stereo moved from car to car over time and always sounded great but then with CDs ended up in a box in the shed. Too many memories to throw it away and now old enough to maybe have some retro value. I was wondering what car it would be at home in (not very Benzy and they look great with the beckers) and given my 87 Mondial has a late model CD maybe its style will fit with all the other 80'sness of that dash. So i will keep in mind your exploits..... although the small amount the car is driven there are usually better sounds coming from the engine to waste listening to boring music!

Nice job Thomas. I assume your a technician when not driving your MB. It also shows how the 3D printer is becoming of age.:) Lots of patience too is a help I guess.

Thanks for the honour, Pete, but you're wrong. Never learned a proper job :laughing6: ... just did my A-Levels and studied Electrical Engineering. Until today I have difficulties explaining how a transistor works. But as long as you understand that "+" is "-" and blue is red, then you're ok.

@Craig: you got it, that's the point :occasion5: ... they're actually not expensive. The first one I got for 15 Euros, the next two were in a box with 7 radios/equalisers for a total of 22 Euros :laughing6:

Here's the 3D-design for the frame:

Thomas, you done it again. Exceeded your own expectations no doubt.

I too am hatching a few projects, but none that would come close to yours.

Stay tuned or make that trip and we'll have that beer and a few WA wines.

Thanks Giles,

maybe next year Oz is on the agenda. We both came to the conclusion, that we probably don't like the huge trip (4 months) in one go to discover Australia. So if we're coming again next year, besides Melbourne we might go somewhere, where we haven't been. WA (Perth) is on the agenda, Darwin, Canberra (still have to visit John), maybe Kangaroo Island, we'll see. Also I promised my wife to visit Uluru (I've been there once), as she didn't make it in 35 years of living in Australia.

Best regards
Thomas

What a cool little project attacked with typical German ingenuity and precision... well done!

How about re-programming it so that when you push the 'metal' button it jumps straight to a folder with appropriate mp3's - sabbath, metallica etc... :laughing6:

One of the guys at my work brought in his 1987 Tandy catalog the other day and we all had a good chuckle at the car audio section - several pages of 'Realistic' brand radio cassettes at exorbitant prices... I'll have to see if I can borrow it and scan in a few pages!

Thomas...

I LOVE IT.

Awesome work.

Now, how about a single line scrolling OLED version for Becker 1402 Grand Prix / Mexico ?? :P

Sure Joe :laughing6: ... flat or curved?

The hours put into that are just hilarious. So it will definitely be no business.

Originally I wanted to build-in an ipod nano 2nd generation. Constructed the holder already. But the elements/cables of it were so tiny, it just broke once too often.
The idea was to separate the click-wheel and the display ... it would have worked until the cable from the display broke incl. the plug:

Oh that wouldn't have worked...
Why?

Because Apple have to reinvent their product line-up and proprietary connector every 12-18 months for the sake of it.

But.... how about this:

Single Row scrolling OLED display for the 1402 - in the same location as original.
retrofit a card reader to the cassette window.
Use the auto-reverse button as the switch between radio and card reader.
hmm.
I'm thinking too much. I can see potentially enough room inside a single DIN for a 4 channel 100wRMS 4Ω amplifier and the only issue I can see is heat...

The Apple worked already; the idea was to put a USB-Connector into the front and - as soon as the Laptop is plugged in - a relais would switch the ipod power supply from the radio to the USB.

Reg. the Becker: I would leave the original display for the radio and put a display into the cassette slot (as I have done); otherwise you would have to install a combined radio/mp3 with a display.

Reg. amplifier; these units have become so small these days, I will just put an external one to it.
