Upgrading audio in W126

Post by jas-300-sel » Sat 12 Sep, 2015 11:07 am

Hi guys newbie question here. I'm wanting to upgrade the audio in my 89 300SEL and looking for advice on where to start

I just want cleaner, richer sound. No subs no extra speakers.

Happy to put new speakers behind the existing grills, but no external mods, it must look original.
Happy to replace the amp or amps, don't know exactly where they are or their spec, all I know is that they're in the boot?
I'd like to keep the head unit stock, however if it's the main thing that will dramatically improve things then I'll source a modern unit that's sympathetic to the look of the car.
I don't want to mess about with the wiring if I can avoid it.

Looking for any advice please.

Cheers

Jas.

Hi Jas,

I had a similar problem with the R107. I have replaced the original radio with some adapters with a modern Blaupunkt one, under 100 Euros. The amplifiers these days in those radios are powerful enough for the "little" speakers, that can fit in the original holes. I guess it's similar with the W126, but in the R107 front only 10cm speakers fit ... I took those for around 30 Euros ... Huge difference in sound.

Thanks mate!

I've since found a audio guy in Brisbane who has done a fair bit of classic Merc work from new system installs to reinstalling original systems back into cars that have been butchered with aftermarket gear.

I'll let you know how it all goes.

Just in case anyone was wondering a stock Australian deliver 89 300SEL has:

Becker Grand Prix BE 780 head unit
Front speakers are 3.5" round in a proprietary mounting plate
Rear speakers are 6" round and also sit in a proprietary mounting plate
There is no amp in the boot at all meaning the head unit solely powers the speakers

After removing the grilles today and checking them I'm thinking that new speakers alone will not deliver much of an improvement not to mention the huge cost of trying to retrofit some kind of auxiliary input for my iPod. Despite really wanting to keep the Becker I don't think it's a real option.

That's the reason that led me to this solution for my R107:

Radio: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B008DUS ... ge_o05_s00 ... not too flashy, you can plug in a USB-stick, 4x50 Watts
Cable adapter, leaves all cables incl. automatic antenna untouched: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004GDQ ... ge_o06_s00

As we had it in another thread, I don't know, if those cable adapters are available in Oz ...

Same head unit I'm looking at because it's low key. I'm not following you on the adaptor though? Do you have an English language link please miene Deutsche is der schule kinder sprachen. Plus I'm very new to doing anything to cars, I've always owned new cars so this is my first car I've had to do things like audio etc to.

I was simply going to leave the speaker wires intact and just swap out new 3.5 & 6" speakers then fit the new head unit with minimal chopping of wires and simply bypass the fader and run extensions from the fader speaker cables to the new head unit. Does the Blaupunkt have a remote power out for the power antenna?

Cheers

Yes,
the Blaupunkt has a remote output for the antenna. There are several - optically identical - models available ... some with bluetooth, ipod etc. The problem with the wires is, that those Beckers have the old DIN connections (power, speakers etc.) but not ISO. This cable adapter connects power, 4 loudspeakers and the electrical antenna signal to the old plugs, i. e. you do not have to chop anything and can revert back to the old unit without any problems. So maybe check some Aussie sites for DIN /ISO adapters

Is this what you're talking about Thomas?

http://www.nexxia.co.uk/products.asp?ca ... led+Search

Then all should need to do is bypass the fader and extend the speaker wires to all 4 channels on the new head unit

I bought the same type of adapter from the Great Auction Site

Also, i've drawn this up to help. I hope it does!

All wires shown are actually a + & - pair.

Thanks so much Trent, my car is not listed in the vehicles for that harness, will it still fit my GP BE780? I'm assuming the same head unit was used in your TE.

Don't worry about that list, my car's not on it either!

If your car currently has the Becker fitted, then it will have the same plugs as my car and therefore the adapter will fit. The same connectors were used for all Beckers (612, 738, 754, 780, 1402, 1480, 1432 etc etc) from the early 80's until the mid 90's.

There is a great Harman Becker Upgrade you can do to 126.
I did one in my 86 SEC and it sounded like a dream, even with the Spare Wheel Mounted sub off
