Audio Upgrade

Post by ngruzevs » Tue 24 Feb, 2015 8:35 pm

As I've got my wood trim out, I think it's an opportune moment to upgrade to a bluetooth equipped unit.

I've been looking at the Blaupunkt Toronto, anyone got any other thoughts or feedback on this unit?

It looks like someone has replaced the Becker with a VDO unit.
We have a Kenwood installed in each of our W202 c250's. They have Bluetooth and can pair with a number of phones (at least 2 at a time - one being the main unit), incoming calls on either activate the BT radio system and can be answered from the radio "phone" button.
Outgoing calls using the stored numbers (recent o/g calls and i/c calls stored) can be made from the main phone from the Radio, or from the either phone by keying/recalling the number and using the phone call button. The phone in use grabs the Radio BT and conversations can be had using the radio mic / speakers. This assumes that the BT is not in use already on another phone.
I used a terminal strip with screw connectors so I could easily swap the speaker outputs to correctly arrange the car with the balance and fader controls of the radio.
Have fun.

Maybe, although being a private import the VDO may have been the stock unit for that market. I determined that it is a private import because it has the superior dual zone "manual" climate control (similar to Oz delivered W124s) rather than the troublesome single zone "automatic" pushbutton climate control that came in Oz delivered W126s. It also has auto transmission with switchable modes.

Thanks for the responses

The car is a South African import, I believe a Becker was originally installed but can't be certain. The car was imported in 99, I believe the VDO was installed around this time, as I don't think CD equipped units were common in 88 when the car was assembled. From what I can tell the assembly line just produced the 300SE within the W126 range, just looking at a number of South African listings the cars came out with plastic wheel caps, dual manual climate control and note the reflectors at the front. There are a number of other differences, guess this is due to local content requirements; e.g. the glass seems to be from a local supplier.

I prefer the manual climate setup, I feel there's more flexibility as opposed to low & high in the climate control equipped cars.

My car is same colour as the one in this listing, seems to be rare in Aus, can't say I've seen it on any locally delivered W126's.

Perhaps also look at the - NAKAMICHI NA350iBTR In-DASH CD USB BLUETOOTH CAR STEREO RECEIVER

One recent review on Amazon 17th Jan 2015
When I got my first 350iBTR I instantly fell in love... sophisticated looks, very cool volume knob feel and functional design. Then, of course, I stayed in a garage for some time and started exploring.
I still had my original car speakers but I liked the sound a lot. Actually that was cool since I could compare previous headunit (JVC) to Nakamichi.
I don't have to tell you what this unit has (see features), all I can say is that it sounds great! I knew right away that I don't want any other unit but this one.
However, hick-up came when I plugged in my iPhone. Unit crashed and reset all the settings. Than it happened again and again. I exchanged it for exact same one. This one crashed too.
I got a third one. It crashed as well. I decided to send an email to Nakamichi explaining my problem. They replayed with a new firmware attached and problem was solved.
It seems that my iPhone 6 with 128 GB was confusing the unit.
I finally got my Nakamichi to work perfect!
In the mean time my new speakers, amp and subwoofer came in and system is sounding amazing!!! While I was waiting for USB problem to be resolved, I enjoyed music from SD card (my audio books, it continues where it stopped), CD and mainly my music via Bluetooth. Funny thing is that Bluetooth sounds so good that I didn't even need USB at the end hahaha! I just assumed that Bluetooth sounds just ok based on other radios I've heard. Not the case here. To be fair, I'll mention that USB connected phone shows song info and you can browse from the phone.
If you have just a factory speakers: turn on two enhancements: DBSS and XBASS. You'll love it!
I do wish unit had an external Mic for Bluetooth though! But hey, this performance for this money is incredible!

Finally chose the Blaupunkt Toronto, it's now installed with the refurbished timber trim.

Very happy with my choice, although it's not period it looks more in keeping with the age of the car. Very easy to connect to my iPhone 6.
