Jelfes, you might be in luck brother,

Andrew ended up coming over my pace a few weeks ago and wanted to have a look at my 16v rolling shell i wanted to get rid of.

I wanted to sell it as one but andrew might of convinced me to sell it as parts, so these a 16v bodykit sitting there that i wont use.

If you interested make me an offer.

Cheers dave

BTW Nice looking car andrew, lets race hahaha
Just need a harmonic balancer hahahaha.

Thats great news.

But before I make you an offer do you know if your body kit will fit onto a 1985 W201? I know that the moulding clips have to be changed but I've seen some web sites that sell body kits and it appears that there are Pre and Post 1987 body kits. :dontknow: I cant understand why there would be a difference in year models if its the same car.

I suppose the cost of shipping from Adelaide to Sydney will be a determining factor. Do have any idea what the cost will be and how to move these bulky items to Sydney?

Thanks for the comments fellas, but really it's thanks to Joe as he sold me on the virtues of the w201 chassis when he took me for a quick lap around some great driving roads behind my place in his Cossie. When he showed me the red 2.6 and how well it went, I was hooked. The upgrades to the brakes and suspension just sealed the deal for me.
All we then had to do was work out a deal which suited us both :occasion5:

Greg in Oz wrote:So Andrew, you have the 16 valve body kit, the suspension, the wheels and the big brakes. When does a 3 litre M103 (or even an M104) get dropped in there?
Hopefully an M103 3lt with a matching auto will be turning up........soon

I was thinking about using it to put together a 190E track car with a supercharged Chev 6lt LS2 V8 and 6speed going for the <1000kg @ >500kw target

Dave, I'll race you with the 16v but not with the 16v and the blower! :glasses2: :laughing6:

Andrew, I still have a tear in my eye when Joe drove it away from my place! An awesome car that took us down to the snow (fun with and without snow chains on the back!), up to Queensland etc. Hope you have as much fun as I did.

By way of background, I bought it from a guy who'd advertised it on ebay. After a bit of haggling, I paid just under half his asking price.

It had a set of mismatched alloys (a couple of which were bent), and woeful suspension. I ended up replacing some cracked dash panels, put in a new stereo, new mats, new Bilstein shocks, got some sportline springs (thanks Clayton), and sportline 15 inch wheels (thanks Greg) & Potenza tyres, reconditioned the aircon, new radiator, aerial, suspension bushes etc - and this is all before Joe worked his magic on brakes, wheels, and springs!

Here's a snap of it when I got it, at 138,000km. A chap from the parts counter at a local MB dealer remembered the car as "the one from the '87 Motor Show", however I never managed to get any validation on this.

Regards,

Rob

ONE90E.

Thanks for the offer but I think I will pass at this stage.

But, I have a friend that may be interested in the rolling shell. Is it fitted with all the interior?

Andrew, looks great - and so much better than the Jag X-Type I bought to replace it! :wall:

I was chucking out some stuff on the weekend and found the ashtray (in unused condition) that I removed when I installed the iPod connector. If you want it, just PM me and I'll pop it in the post.

Cheers,

Rob

Decided it was time to do a thorough clean of the 16v before heading out to Port Macquaire. Cleaned up on Saturday and headed out on Sunday.

Started with the wheels. They were very dirty with caked on brake dust making it impossible to remove. I sprayed on some secret wheel cleaner and let it soak for a few minutes before scrubbing it with my niece's toothbrush. Do you think she'll notice?

It's always good to see the next owner of the car take really good care of the vehicle.

Hope to see it sometime soon, in the new year, but first I need to finish the mods to the 124 coupe when I get back.

OzCoz tells me (on the run to Pie in the Sky a few weeks ago) that you're the man to speak to about installing a factory cruise control in the 201. That would a perfect addition to George.

The Lakes Way is an entertaining drive (assuming you don't get stuck behind someone in their diesel family truckster pulling the 'van or boat). Then again, a W201 will make any number of roads like that feel like lots of fun, especially if the W201 is a 16v or Sportline (or similarly modded). I have just recently spent a week in Forster with my family although we had our family truckster (the 300TE) towing a trailer so I didn't bother with The Lakes Way this time (although I have previously enjoyed The Lakes Way in my 190E Sportline). I assume you also meant to say North Coast rather than Central Coast.

Hi SuperHasan,

I said that the man to talk to about retro fitting a cruise control to a W201 is "Greg in Oz". He has actually done it to his Sportline from his Sportline parts car.

"Joe B" is the man to talk to about modifying your 16v ( or politics if you have your Nomex underwear on).

AMG options? From the factory or aftermarket and I am guessing it still has a standard engine?

Pulled the Air Filter off today to clean engine and install a K&N lifetime filter and noticed the valve cover has "AMG" embossed on it - was a bit dirty but cleaned up really well.

Great photos and video SuprHasan. You are a brave man owning a black car - every tiny defect shows up, so to get it looking perfect takes enormous effort.

You still have a couple of paint chips I reckon. One a few cm to the right of the E on the back in particular. Not too hard to fix, but you have to be very patient, and smoke a lot of cigars in between the steps  :

Thanks mate. I bought the touch up paint, but didn't have time to fix it before the show.

Seems that I can't help myself when it comes to interesting MBs, especially if they are a rare or performance model with a motorsport history.

I enjoy driving the W201 models and have long considered a 16-valve Cosworth as a car I would like to own. Today that wish became reality. I have for the past few years been aware of a 2.3-16 with an interesting history, most recently owned by a fellow car club member. I had mentioned to him that if ever he wanted to sell, I'd be interested in buying. After talking about it for the past two years, the deal was done today.

The car is a 1985 190E 2.3-16 manual originally delivered at the Sindelfingen plant in Germany. It travelled with its first owner briefly to the UK before being transported to Australia when just a few months old. It has a well documented history and is in good condition, and apart from a few items (such as the Lorinser wheels) presents as being very original.

Oh, and apart from being a tidy example of a model I have long admired, there is one other aspect I found attractive. Its original owner was Australia's last Formula 1 World Champion, Alan Jones.

Here are a couple of photos from its previous owner (who also owns the 2.5-16 in one of the photos).

Congratulations Greg! It is a very fine example of the 2.3-16 fitted with nearly the entire options list. It frequented the workshop of the 16v Guru so it has been well fettled. Nice and straight, good paint, but what about the steering wheel? That Momo needs to go to a good home - like mine!

Fantastic Greg,
congrats!!! :notworthy: ... I remember, when the 2.5-16 was on the market, I got one at the stealership for half a day. Revved wonderful, pretty fast, I think I got it to 235km/h.

Enjoy!

Brian, It is well optioned although cruise is absent which is a pity (cruise is handy for preserving one's licence). The Momo steering wheel obviously is not original but is nice. Unfortunately, the previous owner also likes it and it was a sacrifice I needed to make in negotiating a lower sale price. He has given me the original steering wheel however I didn't realise how much bigger the early W201 wheel was compared to those in our later 201s and 124. I knew the Sportline wheel was smaller but the even the standard wheel in the updated 201 and 124 were somewhat smaller.
KimB wrote:Is it too late to get Alan Jones to sign the glovebox?
Kim, Maybe difficult to get AJ to sign the glovebox but I do at least have a signed letter from him stating that he purchased the car new. The well documented owner's log book also shows AJ as the original owner.

Thomas, The owner's manual states top speed for the 2.3-16 at approx. 230km/h. The power to weight ratio and resulting performance figures are quite similar between the 2.3-16 and 500SLC. Where they differ is in the very different way the power is delivered. The lazy 5 litre M117 is all about effortless torque in the low to mid rev range whereas the 16 valve 2.3 litre M102 needs to be worked well up the rev range to deliver its best. It doesn't lack torque but its torque numbers are not much larger than the 8 valve 2.3 and obviously the 5 litre has a considerable displacement and therefore torque advantage. I'm sure I will enjoy.

Steven, Fortunately nothing will end up parked in the street as I have secure storage for a couple of cars elswhere. The motorkhana special and its trailer will however be looking for a new owner.

So now Karen can drive the 2.3, and the boys can share the 124 and the black auto?
Sounds like a fair deal.

I might have a spare steering wheel laying around. I'll have to check though.

Joe,
Brian and I were talking just the other day saying how your current avatar can now be updated. Just needs us all to drive to Wakefield Park again in our matching 2.3-16s for some more photos. Having said that, I still like your avatar with my white Sportline between Brian and your 2.3-16s.

The plan was really for SWMBO to drive the 300TE, older son to drive the black 2.3 auto and me to continue driving my white 2.3 manual as a daily with the 2.3-16 and 500SLC for weekends. With time when younger son starts driving, the boys could share the black 2.3 and borrow my white 2.3 when necessary. What has actually happened is that the black 2.3 auto tends to get used by everyone as SWMBO actually prefers a smaller car. The 300TE is only getting used for load carrying, towing, longer trips and family holidays.

As for steering wheels, I do like the Momo both in appearance and feel, but I can't keep that one as it is going back to the previous owner. For now I may fit the 2.3-16 with the spare Sportline wheel (from the parts car) which is currently fitted to the 300TE. The 300TE can have its original wheel back (currently fitted to the 500SLC). The original 2.3-16 wheel can go into the 500SLC as being leather it is nicer and marginally smaller than the horrible big vinyl and foam SLC wheel and won't obscure the instruments in the SLC the way the smaller 300TE wheel does.

Thanks Andrew. The real problem on a forum like this is there are so many nice cars in many different model types. Your 190E 2.6 with its 16v bodykit and other enhancements is nice too. Just riding in the the bargain 2.6 purchased by "oz coz" the other day reminded me of how nice the W201 with M103 is (but then an M103 is nice in anything). I still believe a 190E fitted with a 3 litre M103 along with Sportline or similar enhancements would be a lovely daily driver. It would also offer similar power to weight ratio to a 2.3-16 giving plenty of performance with a little less fuss than a 16v M102.

You might get 2.3-16 performance out of a 3L M103, but bear in mind you also get the significant extra nose weight. The handling qualities between my 2.6 and 2.0 are worlds apart, and even fresh stock suspension simply doesn't do well enough to compensate for this. You lose a lot of balance in the 6cyl chassis which can be frustrating when going down certain back roads... but no less, I'll have the M103 any day.

Anyway, here's the 2.6 on a nice Sunday run.

Horses for courses. On the open road (and especially one with some twisty stuff) I'll agree that the 4 cylinder car, especially a 16 valve or Sportline is ideal. The M102 is smooth and quiet at speed and the W201 fitted with the four is a nice chassis. As a daily driver around town and for commuting, the six would be ideal. The M103 is silky smooth accelerating through the rev range and gives the W201 effortless performance. The extra mass of the six over the front axle won't be noticed in traffic and around town, nor on a boring freeway for that matter.

There was a certain criteria the car HAD to have , Auto, working A/C , diesel.
Ticked those boxes :)

I was thinking what an unusual car that would be in Australia and then I noticed you are in New Zealand. Diesel W201s weren't common here and those we did get were early (series 1) versions. I don't believe I have ever seen a late (series 2 or 3) W201 diesel here.

Yep, these are very popular here , this is our 3rd 2.5 , the first was a 5spd the 2nd an auto but it got crashed, this car took us 7 months to find , hence the 10hrs road trip to get it. They just don't come up for sale very often, testament to their popularity I guess . AND the outlandish price I had to pay. It has all the usual poor previous maintenance issues to deal with, but its just mechanical stuff and is repairable with a suitable injection of $$, looking on ebay now for a belt tensioner bracket assy :) off to the tyre shop tomorrow. But it starts perfect and drives lovely. On the 5hr drive home , it used just a little more than HALF the fuel than the '76 300D we went away in. Hmmmm .
