The thick milky brown stuff in the overflow tank has taken over a bit, after managing ok for about the last 2 years, it appears the HeadGasket is now totally shot.
The car is now starting to overheat even on short runs so i am goinjg to repalce the headgasket.

I replaced one on a 1987 230TE about 15 years ago, should be a similar process - was before the interent was so widespread, so i used a Haynes manual.

I recall putting a bit if 4x1 wood in the fornt of the head to hold up the timing chain - but can't find anyone else who did this. Does the chain not fall down if let go when the head comes off ?

Any other tips? Last time I disconnected both Exhaust and Inlet - this times I might leave the exhaust connected (shouild make it easier to lift the head off). I remember how heavy it was last time - and I was 15 years younger.

Most likely you will have severe head corrosion leaving it for that long.
The coolant becomes acidic due to combustion gases and engine oil mixing with the coolant. I would check the availability and price of a replacement head before you start work on the car.

Nearly got the Head off, so ill tell you what it looks like.

Car was running fine up to this, which is a but surprising for such a major oil/coolant breach.

In the instructions for the Chain Tensioner, it mentions that it needs to be reset. This makes sense if it is in pieces. But mine came out in one piece and all still assumbled and working (the plunger moves freely and can compress by pushing in against the spring).
I scerwed it back in as it is, and it pushed up properly against the lower chain rail and tightened the chain up properly.
Do I really need to take it apart and reset it, if it all looks fine ?

Hi again,
I have the Head off now - and the HeadGasket looks quite ok. No signs of any wear or breaks.

Can you usually see where the HeadGasket is blown ?

I am now wondering if the leak from oil to coolant could be coming form somewhere else ?

Will definitely get the head crack tested and checked for flatness - any recommendations for a Melbourne Eastern Suburbs machine shop ?
I googled one in Vermont that sounds ok.

I think corrosion wise (in older heads anyway) you can see the holes for the water jacket bigger and closer to the combustion area. If that all looks good then it is probably fine. So oil in the water but not water in the oil? Water in the oil for 2 years might be a worry as far as wear in bearings. But if not then i guess it is just where the oil line goes through the block face. Does that area on the head gasket look oily? If its overheating though you would think compression is leaking into water. That could be warpage that has just got worse. All just guesses - Im not an expert.

I did a bit of googling and it looks like the leak between coolant and oil is up the back as it is not shiny between the holes but quite black ( a sign of leakage).
Have sent the head off today for crack testing and straigthness. Will see how i go.

Hi,

You should have new version of chain tensioner. You should disassemble tensioner. Then install housing, plunger (you should hear/feel click and plunger should touch the guide rail) , spring and cap for the housing.
Otherwise you could see the chain coming out from valve cover....

Hi,
Yes, I will disassemble the Chain Tensioner and reset the ratchet to the initial position.

Not 100% I need to , as it seems to slot in ok as the spring pushes the rod back in nicely - but will do anyway as doesn't make sense to muck up such a simple process.

Another tip i got from the Internet's is to use VHT Crackle paint on the Magnesium Rocker Cover. I resprayed with plain black engine paint last year, and it is already peeling off.
