190E Lorinser prepared by Allan Moffat?

Post by AMG123 » Fri 11 Aug, 2017 10:00 am

Hello all,

Some months back I purchased three cars from a deceased estate in central Victoria - a 1981 BMW E21 318i 5-speed manual, a 1981 W123 300D 4-speed manual, and a 1985 W201 190E 5-speed manual with full Lorinser body kit, wheels and steering wheel (the W201 can be seen at http://grouseguitars.com.au/mercedes/W201 ). These cars had been laid up in a shed for about 16 years.

Just yesterday, while chamoising the car before putting a cover on it, I noticed the faint outline of a mobile phone number on the rear window, where a 'for sale' notice had been put many years before. Out of curiosity, I sent an SMS to the number, saying who I was, that I was restoring a white 1985 Mercedes 190E, and asking whether they were a previous owner, and whether they could fill me in on any of its history.

I was surprised to receive a reply within minutes. Yes, he had been a previous owner, and then he went on to text, "It was put together by Allan Moffat's racing team. It was first or early at least model used around Bathurst from memory".

Obviously, with no roll cage and standard M102 engine the car was not an actual race car, but can anyone shed any light on whether Allan Moffat's workshop at 711 Malvern Rd Toorak did Lorinser upgrades to W201s or other Mercedes models? The business was wound up in 2015, and the wortkshop demolished for high-rise housing, so I can't follow leads up there, and Allan Moffat, now 77, is notoriously private, so impossible to get in contact with.

I'd love to put some flesh on the bones of the claim made by the previous owner!

Any knowledge out there on this subject?

A few years ago i was attending the Dowerin Field Day annual country Expo over here in WA (a country Town a few hrs out of Perth) and at the Ford display Allan Moffat was there making a rare appearance and i managed to have a good chat to him.
It only occurred because i made a joke about me being a Merc fan and in particular the older models and he got curious which triggered me being able to actually have a decent chat with him.
Told Him i was into the 80's and in particular the W126's and what i had.
He said he was a big fan of the 80's & 90's Mercs era and had done his fair share of dabbling himself but did not go into any details.
He was insistent that i have a signed poster from him and personally signed a poster of his Bathurst Ford XA coupe in front of me (i didn't even asked that he do that).
The Ford stealership guys standing around certainly had a puzzled look on their faces that we were freely talking about Mercs

Always a good feeling to know your cars history. Must have stacked on the kms if it was at 334000 in 2001.

"Stacked on the kms"? If 20,875km/year can be called 'stacking', yes! Judging by the numerous stone chips to the front of the car, mainly grille and spoiler, I'd say the 'stacking' was done mainly in the country. The car's overall condition bears that out too. I'm pretty stacked to add it to the collection.

Thanks Mark.

Yes, the Gilbern is a favourite of mine! Certainly a car I can be sure will be the only one attending when I drive it to any classic car event.

Interesting! I'm certainly going to try my best to explore this rather tantalising bit of news!

Why not ask Allan Moffat himself?

I've seen him on TV talking to Fletch from Classic Restos and he seems to be quite a congenial guy, as West Coast Kim discovered when he met him.

I'm not sure how you could track him down, maybe through the Ford Car Clubs perhaps or email Fletch as he generally responds.

Nothing like getting your car's history from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

Cheers,
Kim
