W201 190D for sale?? if i can figure out what its worth

Post by APJAPJ » Wed 02 Aug, 2017 12:20 am

I have been hesitating to sell my 190D for a very long time and just want to get some idea of interest at the moment. I have owned it for about 13 years now and it was my daily driver until last year... but the truth is that while mechanically very sound, it needs front suspension to be rebuilt (quoted around 1500) and it is a little (not a lot) smoky on start up and under acceleration.

Because i moved to the suburbs and live in a courtyard I dont really like starting it in the morning because it does attract a lot of attention in the sea of hybrid toyota's so i drive it much less than it deserves.

Champage / Beige cloth
320k kms - I bought at about 230k kms
Clean interior and exterior.
Nice paint
one small dent on boot; otherwise VERY straight body

It has become unloved though; and my recent obsession with 70's and 80's v8 mercedes has led to it not getting the funds it needs. Also because it has been so bulletproof I have been treating it as such.

Good
No leaks - fluid or from rain
Very original
seamless gearshifts (rebuilt at about 310k kms)
exceptionally relaxing drive
I have all receipts from my ownership and a stamped book with handwritten notes from previous owner as to what he did
Benz Workshop manual included too

Bad
Could do with new injectors (2k) but totally fine at the moment... just smokier than my other 300D
Front seats need springs
fabric wearing on front drivers bolster

I simply have no idea what price to sell it for... but more importantly... I dont know where to find a buyer who wants to invest money in making this diesel the car it deserves to be.

Any suggestions / thoughts?

I am interested in thoughts as to selling price... dont be afraid to make suggestions I wont be offended.

How about putting your location (Town / State) in your profile so we can see where you are located. A $2000 car in Perth is a different proposition to a $2000 car in Darwin, Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart or Sydney.
Someone who would like to see the vehicle is unable to do so without knowing how far away the car is.

Have a look at these two on carsales for a start:

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 5625/?Cr=0

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 9692/?Cr=1

The white one looks absolutely mint, although pics can be deceptive. I can't find any others for sale on the usual websites at the moment.

The injectors might just need new nozzles - if you fitted monark nozzles and then did a valve adjustment and diesel purge you may find that the smoke goes away. $2k for injectors seems excessive?

I'm going to take a stab and say that based on the description you've given and the issues with the front suspension and smoking, you'd be looking at a sale price of around $2-3k - BUT
if you post some pics and list your location maybe we could get some more opinions and maybe a better idea :glasses2:

If you are handy with the tools, the suspension can be done by yourself.
The biggie is that you need the Mercedes Spring compressor.
You can get a local shop to press in your LCA bushings and ball joint - I had mine done for $40.00.

If you need the suspension done for a Road Worthy certificate then you need it done.

Trying to sell a car without a certificate is difficult. The reality is that Cars that age without a RWC or rego are worth scrap value only.

Hi

The VIN is WDB2011262F164620

IS anyone able to recommend a diesel specialist who could give an opinion on the car? I am tempted to get it repaired myself, but... it is currently #6 on my list.

Thanks for the note regarding suspension; again... does anyone have a shop in Melbourne they would recommend.

Thanks for the feedback regarding price. I was thinking around the 2000 mark... but then I keep thinking that they are practically impossible to find so I have been in a two minds for a few years now.

Still no location in your profile!
A 190D is not worth much, unless in mint condition and then only to a committed buyer. Repair it if you want to sell or keep, but remember that you may not recover the repair costs, unless you can do most of the work yourself.
