W201 2.5D sudden idle vibration

Post by node105 » Sat 21 May, 2016 12:54 pm

Hi,

2.5 diesel in otherwise very sound condition.

This started suddenly one morning. A coarse vibration that is seen in the rear lip of the bonnet, felt through the steering wheel and dash, but not the gear shift (auto).
It is not present once driving, eventually disappears once fully up to temperature.
When cold, raising the idle ( probably to 1500 - 20o0 rpm) will smooth it out.

Have had the car up on a hoist but can't find anything loose or any evidence of contact.

Any suggestions what to look at?

Are all of your GPs working? This sounds like there is one cylinder which is not up to temperature at start.
Another issue could be that one Injector is not spraying a nice mist, and with the engine cold, it is not igniting properly.

Check the GPs first, so you know they are OK prior to having the injectors overhauled.

Others may suggest other items to check.

thanks Tony.

I would not expect it to be the glow plug, as this would not have any effect once the motor is running - I would have thought. Am I missing something?

But the injectors - yes.

I'll crsck the injectors one by one to see if one does not cause an idle change

My wife's car has a crook GP. It starts fine but has a really lumpy idle. My wife revs the engine up to heat it up and after 20 secs of the higher RPM the engine will idle smoothly.
There were similarities in the description of this issue to what my wife's car does.
Have fun,
Tony

Had ordered some new Monark injector nozzles, and glow plugs, form Germany via fleaby; which arrived last week.

Put them in today. Getting the injector bodies apart was bit tough, even with a cheater bar.

No 3 was surprisingly rusty below the threads. Motor had a full rebuild c. 6 years ago.
No. 4 was very fuel wet in the head well, goop even, so probably the source of the vibration.

Injectors all cleaned and new nozzles back in ok. I cut the carbon out of the glow plug chambers ( have a genuine Mercedes tool), there was surprisingly little.

Now I can't get it to start. Cracked the lines, and get fuel weeping on cranking but no real pressure or volume. Would not have thought just disconnecting the hard lines from the injectors would have caused the lines to drain back...

Will try again tomorrow,

Was there any engine oil in the injector well in the valve cover? This indicates a leaking gasket in the valve cover.

How is the vibration now?

vibration seems a bit better, wasn't exactly in an analytical frame of mind when I finally got it started.

Sourced some 80A strips fuses today, so will start it again tomorrow if I get a chance.
Had to resort to hiring a car ....

There was oil in one of the injector wells, in the head, external to the cam cover.

Ordered the 3 throttle linkages today from MB, 3 weeks from Germany. Will have to rig a temporary solution for the rear to the injector body pivot.

Check your engine mounts. They are probably collapsed. Rear gearbox mount also.

Depending on how much oil accumulates, and how deep it gets, it may be worth replacing the gaskets for the cam cover and the ones for the injector ports, so no oil leaks out.
