190E Front Exhaust - OEM?

Post by tom_kauf » Fri 23 Oct, 2015 2:39 am

Hi everyone,
My 1985 190E's front exhaust section (which includes the Cat of course) really needs replacing due to rust. The dealer quoted me Aus$4808.51 incl GST :confused2:.

I usually don't mind paying for good quality items, but that's just crazy. That obviously doesn't even include the Centre or Rear Muffler sections. I am replacing those as well, for under $200ea from the quality OEM supplier Eberspaecher. But neither the US OEM supplier, nor Eberspaecher Germany have that front Exhaust Part#. It's item 8 in the diagram below (Part# A 2014907619 , or A 2014901120 from model year ‘87 on - but I'm not sure what the difference is).

Any ideas where I can source an OEM Part? I've emailed MB Spares before, but didn't hear back (and I've bought quite a lot from them). Maybe they think I'll have a heart attack at the price lol, but it can't be worse than what I've been quoted by the dealer.

Or is there a different Part# I could try? That Part# doesn't seem to come up often when searching online. I would've thought all RHD 2L 8v 190Es (Auto in my case) share that part - eg UK cars.

I know I could go down the route of getting something custom-made, but I'm really not keen on that - I've had terrible experiences with every exhaust shop I've been to (incl the supposed quality places). I want the parts so I can do the work myself (the replacement brackets, bolts, hangers etc have already been ordered from the dealer).

After some more research, it seems like my single pipe Font Exhaust is rare? A lot of the OEM ones on eg Ebay are twin-pipe (diagrams below), even non 16v ones. But mine was definitely a single - pic below.

I even have 2 exhaust brackets (Item#95 and #77 in the above diagram), and apparently #95 is no longer available worldwide - so it could be that my setup is a bit weird after all. It seems like they went to a single bracket with the twin-pipe design.

Maybe replacing the header to a more common type will help me out of my situation?

Hello, was your car originally delivered in Japan? Without the VIN number I can't be sure, but suspect this is the case. So the part you are looking for was only made to suit RHD Japanese delivered 190E's. So the chance of finding one I would have thought is quite rare.

The difference between 201 490 76 19 and 201 490 11 20 is that the thread on the flange changes size.

I would go with a custom made unit, but just be careful who you choose to do the job.

Hi John, thanks for the info  .
Yes, it was an Asian Import (probably by the previous owner, but an Asian Dealer Plate in the driver's door opening confirms this). Ah, ok - that explains why it is such a rare piece.

VIN is WDB2010242F069293 , but even the dealer never manages to find that in their system. I always have to tell them it's not a typo (see pic below).
In case you need it: Engine Number is 10296222008216 , Transmission is 201 270 0901 722 400 20 168086

Thank you for explaining the differences in parts, good to know.

Is there anything you could order for me, to make more common 190E exhaust parts fit my car (like another exhaust manifold)? The you could supply me a less rare Front Exhaust piece.
I can give you a call if you'd like - I was planning on doing that next week anyway, since I know you can't always answer all emails (especially for what are clearly obscure parts like mine).

I'm happy to spend a bit of money, because I'd really prefer not having to get anything custom-made. And if you are able to help source BRACKET A2014923841 that is apparently No Longer Available from the dealer, that'd also be great.

I have ordered OEM Front Muffler 201 490 25 15 and Rear Muffler 201 490 26 15 from Eberspaecher, which seem to be pretty common between a lot of 190Es. So that's a start to making the exhaust assembly.

Why do you need the engine pipe? is it because the outer shield that was used on the Jap spec car is all rusty? If so remove it and see what you have underneath. I would suspect that it is fine.

Yeah, quite bad rust (even holes in the front pipe itself). And badly squashed underneath. The whole middle and rear muffler are aftermarket, and are just too loud. I've had it patched and welded for years, it's now time to do it properly.

How about I buy a normal (non-Japanese) pre-facelift 2.0L OEM Front Section from you (if you can get one)? I understand it may not fit perfectly, but I'll be able to get it modified to fit my exhaust manifold. That'll be less stuffing around than getting a whole section custom made.

So here is the final result. For $345 a UK Merc specialist is supplying me a new genuine front exhaust section  .

It is cheap because its a non-cat version, and postage will be on top of that. I'll get my local Mercedes specialist to install the lambda sensor and everything else so it runs well. Since we don't have emissions testing here, and the car gets driven less than 1000km a year, the environmental effect is negligible. And the UK forum guys who've done the same say it's a nice improvement in power  . Shipping won't be cheap but I had the mid & rear exhaust sections shipped from an Eberspaecher supplier in the US, and shipping was less than $100.

I spoke to MB Spares, *EDIT and it turns out their email never go through to me (not even in my junk mail folder by accident). So it's good to know I have another option if the one that's on the way from overseas won't work. Thanks guys
