Stuttering 190E

Post by Hendrik » Mon 07 Jul, 2014 11:07 am

My Mums 190E is being a pain at the moment.
When you go to take off it will stutter/hesitate/misfire and nearly stall, however once it gets going it seems fine, above 1200 or so revs.
Haven't had a chance to put in the workshop for some serious looking at.
Any ideas?

With all the wet/damp weather we have been having lately could be moisture/corrosion in the distributor cap and/or spark plug leads where they connect to the dizzy cap / coil? Sounds like it might also be a coil issue?

If it's K-jet (maybe all 190s are?) then could it be the fuel distributor?

Tried a spare dizzy cap, no better, also tried another couple of FPRs but that ain't no good either.
It just seems that the spark is not advancing/retarding when you put your foot down and there is a strongish fuel smell coming out of the exhaust which sort of points to that as well.

I have read of a few identical cases where the culprit was a worn potentiometer. This issue is something I also need to diagnose in the 16v.
Unfortunately they aren't available new from the dealer.
Fortunately you can get a reverse engineered unit from Team Stadler Motorsport in Germany for €160

Hendrik,
Is the fuel smell accompanied by a decent amount of black smoke - difficulty starting and idle rpm behaviour, and light throttle? but under medium - hard throttle it takes off like there is no issue?
(possibly a leaky fuel divider or injector)

Also check the IAC, just disconnect the plug and see if the idle changes - smooths out.

Just some things worth checking. I'd guess you've probably explored those avenues already.

Also check the EHA for leaks.

Hasan,

You can get an original Bosch Potentiometer from this place in the UK. I got one last year.

To ensure you order the right unit for your car, You will need to message the seller with the part number that's stamped on your original unit to get the right one as the Bosch part numbers have changed. I had a part number cross reference list somewhere. If I find it I will post it for you.
