Will look nice parked next to mine when you come over next. :occasion5:
So now Karen can drive the 2.3, and the boys can share the 124 and the black auto?
Sounds like a fair deal.

I might have a spare steering wheel laying around. I'll have to check though.

Joe,
Brian and I were talking just the other day saying how your current avatar can now be updated. Just needs us all to drive to Wakefield Park again in our matching 2.3-16s for some more photos. Having said that, I still like your avatar with my white Sportline between Brian and your 2.3-16s.

The plan was really for SWMBO to drive the 300TE, older son to drive the black 2.3 auto and me to continue driving my white 2.3 manual as a daily with the 2.3-16 and 500SLC for weekends. With time when younger son starts driving, the boys could share the black 2.3 and borrow my white 2.3 when necessary. What has actually happened is that the black 2.3 auto tends to get used by everyone as SWMBO actually prefers a smaller car. The 300TE is only getting used for load carrying, towing, longer trips and family holidays.

As for steering wheels, I do like the Momo both in appearance and feel, but I can't keep that one as it is going back to the previous owner. For now I may fit the 2.3-16 with the spare Sportline wheel (from the parts car) which is currently fitted to the 300TE. The 300TE can have its original wheel back (currently fitted to the 500SLC). The original 2.3-16 wheel can go into the 500SLC as being leather it is nicer and marginally smaller than the horrible big vinyl and foam SLC wheel and won't obscure the instruments in the SLC the way the smaller 300TE wheel does.

Thanks Andrew. The real problem on a forum like this is there are so many nice cars in many different model types. Your 190E 2.6 with its 16v bodykit and other enhancements is nice too. Just riding in the the bargain 2.6 purchased by "oz coz" the other day reminded me of how nice the W201 with M103 is (but then an M103 is nice in anything). I still believe a 190E fitted with a 3 litre M103 along with Sportline or similar enhancements would be a lovely daily driver. It would also offer similar power to weight ratio to a 2.3-16 giving plenty of performance with a little less fuss than a 16v M102.

You might get 2.3-16 performance out of a 3L M103, but bear in mind you also get the significant extra nose weight. The handling qualities between my 2.6 and 2.0 are worlds apart, and even fresh stock suspension simply doesn't do well enough to compensate for this. You lose a lot of balance in the 6cyl chassis which can be frustrating when going down certain back roads... but no less, I'll have the M103 any day.

Anyway, here's the 2.6 on a nice Sunday run.

Horses for courses. On the open road (and especially one with some twisty stuff) I'll agree that the 4 cylinder car, especially a 16 valve or Sportline is ideal. The M102 is smooth and quiet at speed and the W201 fitted with the four is a nice chassis. As a daily driver around town and for commuting, the six would be ideal. The M103 is silky smooth accelerating through the rev range and gives the W201 effortless performance. The extra mass of the six over the front axle won't be noticed in traffic and around town, nor on a boring freeway for that matter.

I was thinking what an unusual car that would be in Australia and then I noticed you are in New Zealand. Diesel W201s weren't common here and those we did get were early (series 1) versions. I don't believe I have ever seen a late (series 2 or 3) W201 diesel here.

Yep, these are very popular here , this is our 3rd 2.5 , the first was a 5spd the 2nd an auto but it got crashed, this car took us 7 months to find , hence the 10hrs road trip to get it. They just don't come up for sale very often, testament to their popularity I guess . AND the outlandish price I had to pay. It has all the usual poor previous maintenance issues to deal with, but its just mechanical stuff and is repairable with a suitable injection of $$, looking on ebay now for a belt tensioner bracket assy :) off to the tyre shop tomorrow. But it starts perfect and drives lovely. On the 5hr drive home , it used just a little more than HALF the fuel than the '76 300D we went away in. Hmmmm .

For those not aware, NZ has a funky system whereby Diesel fuel is cheaper than petrol but you pay some sort of mileage tax or something.
It's amazing how many odometers in NZ Diesel cars have intermittent faults.

300E-24 brake upgrade and suspension rework done last week, needed the H&R W124 springs lowered a shade, B4 bilsteins are new, half the front end needed replacing so that was done too, LCA/balljoints, bushes, some steering parts. Very nicely aligned by a bloke who sets up my mechanic's track 124 and some rally 201s. Handles like it's on rails and stops with amazing power using regular OEM style rotors and pads...I don't do track work so the longevity is better for me and it was an amazing increase from before, which was already not too bad. The steering is so direct now, and I can't believe the handling and braking improvement. I thought it was already good, now it's fantastic! Can take corners confidently at ridiculous speeds when required and stop in an instant...already I find I'm no longer shifting back to 3rd when pulling up, it helped before and now it's completely superfluous.

Howdy there folks,
well this is my first Mercedes and it is a December 1988 build 190E 2.6 the colour is Almadinrot or Almandine (not sure which is correct) it is a Garnet metallic type of colour.
I have called her Etta which means Little One
I don't have much of the history at this stage but I hope to obtain more about it soon.
Here are some photos I took yesterday out and about Canberra.

"Almandinrot" is the official German (Mercedes) word for the colour. With the W202 it was "renamed" to "rubin red" ...

In the 1985 brochure, the colours were still called "barolo rot" (standard, 540) and "pajett rot" (metallic, 587).
"almandin rot" (512) was added in 1988, see here http://www.meinbenz.de/farben/201/Farbcodes201.htm

Thanks again for the link, I had looked at it and somehow missed seeing the indicated information.
I also like the Nautical blue metallic colour.
The major problem we have out here in Australia is the UV rays degrade the clear finish if the vehicles are parked outside for long time on a regular basis. The Blue, Red, and Green colour are the most susceptible to this.

I don't know about rare but it is a creamy/beige colour unfortunately not leather. However who knows what the future has in store after I get all the other little things done. :)

I had R170 SLK 230 Kompressor about 2 years ago.
I sold it off and the new owner had it for a few months before it was stolen (Keys taken from home) and destroyed to pieces :(

Now cut the Background story and this is my current Star

I could say the car is old as me, had a few nitty gritty problems here and there. and i'm looking forward to see if i can rectify it.

Sunroof - not working
Electrically - Wirings are a mess!
Perviously had custom sounds and alarm system which tap to the auto window switches etc. and now those things are starting to play up. GRRR!!!
Driver door central was busted but i now fixed it and works like a charm(tab was broken from the solenoid) except when the alarm playing up.

Mechanically She is pretty alright for an old girl
Slow and cruiser i guess ;)
The only oil leak i have is just the rocker cover seal and other than that its pretty bone dry elses were.

Chris,

A great looking car but it isn't actually a Sportline. They did not arrive until about the 1989 model year. That body kit on yours is actually from a 16 valve. The Sportline didn't get a body kit as such. They just had the standard Series 2 exterior with the lower body cladding and two-tone colour scheme. Many did get the rear spoiler like yours which was originally for the 16 valve models. Your interior could be described as Sportline however it was first used in the 16 valve models and given your exterior I suspect that would be the origin of your interior. The Sportline option consisted of the interior like yours together with lower and firmer suspension, faster steering ratio and smaller steering wheel and Sportline badges. Here is a photo showing my 2.3 Sportline.

Thanks for the pointer

Some one had gone the distance to modified this to something like that.

All the add on clading bumpers and arches are plastics.

Oh well! Learned something new again! This car is full of surprises.

this is my current project. 1993 190e fitted with Nissan sr20det, Nissan 4 speed auto, coilovers and FMIC by previous owner.

got a baseline tune done and it did 160rwhp through the auto on stock boost 7 psi and standard t25 turbo

its in at the moment for a t28 bb turbo, boost controller, bigger injectors, z32 AFM, nistune, more boost

Hoping for 250rwhp with this combo

Next steps will probably be a manual conversion and some track time

I have recently bought this 190E as a weekend cruiser.

It is a 2.0 litre 5 speed manual from 1991. Car is originally from the UK and was imported by the previous owner of 22 years. It has 181,000 miles on the clock and is in very good original order. It is in blue black with cream MB tex interior, sunroof and nice 8 hole alloys.

Cheers

Colin

Hello,
We've had our 1987 190E 2.6 for some years, but I've only just registered on the forum, which I've found most helpful over the years. We don't use it that often so it's now on Victorian Club Permit, since it is old enough. Colour is Champagne Silver, she's done just on 311,000 km and still drives very well, especially after I replaced some worn rear suspension parts a couple of years ago.

Not the greatest pic I'm afraid.

I've also recently purchased a second 1988 190E 2.6 as a donor car to convert the '87 from LPG back to petrol, a task I've just completed. I'll put some details in a new thread, but overall it was a relatively simple process. A previous owner had the LPG installed and we've since been told that Benzes tend not to like running on gas, and ours hasn't been without its problems... hence the desire to change back to petrol.

My father has had quite a few Mercedes over the years. Among the earliest of his cars I can remember are two finnies, both 220SEs I think, one blue, then one white. They made way for a brown 250SE W108 and ultimately a 300 SEL 6.3, which was the only Merc we had once I was old enough to drive. Boy do I remember that one, what a beast. After a break of about 30 years of Mercedes ownership, my father recently bought a 190E 2.3 but unfortunately he's unable to drive any more.

I'm also into Lancias, but hey, we all have our vices.
