W202 OBD2 scan tool not connecting

Hi Everybody,

I have recently bought an OBD2 Scan tool (Autel AL619) and a 38 pin adapter to connect the OBD2 to my 1997 W202 C180.

It will not connect to the car, it powers up OK and runs through some test phases, but then says its not connected to the car.

I've ran it with the ignition Off, ignition On, Engine running and nothing works.

has anyone got any ideas?

I recently got a wifi one off ebay for $18. It doesn't seem to work every time. Its like it needs to reboot after a successful OBD handshake with the app. And the Carly app can never connect to the car (connects to the adapter fine, just not the car). The iphone app I'm using that works every second time is Fourstroke. Its Canadian and free and not bad. I intend to contact the makers of Carly for Mercedes and ask them whats going on.

OBD one half.

You need the Star diagnostic tool to look at this. Mercedes Benz stealership or Independent workshop usually.

Australian MB's didn't get proper OBD until 2001. Unlike the US where it was mandated for 1996.

The OBD11 port should be just in front of the windscreen on the passenger side of the engine bay. Depending on build year it may have one of 3(?) possible configurations.

As per numerous times your wisdom on this and biofuels forums has assisted me. I have mates in WA I need to visit and I tell my girlfriend when we do I need to catch up with this ‘Tony from west oz”and buy him some beers!
Have found the port.
My om605 has been running straight veggie for a year and recently starts Rough for 2minutes, with the glow light remaining on for 50 seconds after start up. Hopefully a young mechanic friend can hook into the port and find something.

The GP lamp staying on after starting is an indication of a blown GP. This is confirmed by the rough running after cold starts.
The GP relay is under the washer reservoir. Undo the black plastic nut on the top of the reservoir and put it to one side. Remove the cover of the GP Relay (pulls off upwards) and remove the large connector. It has 5 pins, which I need glasses to see the labeling, but each pin is numbered to correspond with the individual GPs. Get a multimeter and check the resistance of the test leads, this should be less than 1 ohm. Test GP resistance from each pin to ground (use the engine as your ground for the meter) these should be around 0.5 - 5 ohms (cold) when you subtract the test lead resistance. Normally it is easy to spot the faulty GP as it will be well over 10 ohms. Remove the faulty GP carefully (tighten before loosening to ensure the threads are not binding - leading to a snapped GP in the head - like I had).
Install a new GP and reconnect the lead, plug, cover on the GP relay and replace the washer reservoir.
Start the engine and you will see an immediate difference in idle and the GP lamp will go out when the engine is running.

Interestingly the GP came out easy, and was lovely and clean. Where is all this carbon glueing that is spoken about? Is it only on OM605 running mineral diesel? Perhaps more people should take the used wvo from their local sushi shop, filter and refuel as I do?
I do have water injection that I hope cleans cylinder build ups. Perhaps it works?

The carbonisation on GP threads seems to be due to lack of correct tension when installing the GP. Some fuel / partially burnt fuel travels past the seal of the GP to the head and ends up in the GP thread. Over time the build-up cokes up and siezes the GP in the head.
