Transmission getting a little bit "thumpy"
Checked flex disks - O.K.
Checked fluid - a little low. Haven't changed it for 60,000k's - time to do it.
Drained sump first via dipstick hole with electric pump.
Here's the pump I used - a $40.00 ebay special. Note images from a W210 but it's the same principle.
Oil-pump.jpg
Hooks up to the power outlets under the bonnet - battery is in the boot.
here's the power outlet for the w210 - the oulet for the W202 is in the same place.
Power-w210.jpg
You can drop the used oil straight into the old oil container.
oil-disposal.jpg
About 2 litres came out of the tranny sump.
3.5 litres came out of the torque converter.

Removed the sump pan. No dust and no particles. Tranny has 260K's on it.
Installed new filter.

Here's an image of the fluids.
Tranny-oil.jpg
The oil in the jug on the right is the oil from the transmission. It's dirty green. Indicates that this car was serviced at the stealership - they use the latest synthetic.
The middle jar is New Dex 2 Dino. Dark red colour.
The small jar on the right is MB 236.10 full synthetic.

I used the 236.10 synthetic. All good. Transmission much quieter now.

SuperCheap had a sale on Cherokee Chief fully synthetic engine oil. MB spec 229.3 compliant. $39.00 for 5 litres - cheap.
Works O.K. for M111's.

Used electric pump to drain oil from engine sump. No bother getting under the car to remove sump plug.

Changed Diff oil.
Electric pump made it easy to fill the diff up.

Car made it from the 5th of February to the 22nd of February before the transmission died.

You can cancel my recommendation on synthetic transmission fluid :angryfire:

The parts are pins and connection from the B2 piston. (Controls 1st gear and initial start).

The B2 piston replacement can be done DIY with the correct tools and a bit of mechanical knowhow.

I'll give it a go with the tranny still in the car. If I can't get the B2 piston out I'll need to drop the transmission.

This is a very common fault. Not dependent on the type of fluid. However, transmission guys I have spoken too expressed an opinion that something always seems to go wrong after changing fluid that has been in for an overextended period.

Sourcing one of these transmission second hand (in good condition) is not that easy.
M.B. Spares doesn't have one. Many wreckers I rang looking for another transmission either didn't have one or if they did would not offer one day of warranty on them.
Transmission guys advised me if I had to have one second hand then to get one from a known running car which has no transmission problems.
Getting too old.

All transmission specialists I spoke too also advised me to always use synthetic transmission fluid - at least to DEXIII specs

here's a picture of where these two parts need to go. parts 25 and 20 in the diagram
B2-Brake-band-5.jpg
here's a view of the bottom of the transmission with the valve bodies off.
B2-Brake-band-4.jpg
here's a view of the B2 brake band. The B2 piston pin is arrowed.
B2-Brake-band-3.jpg
here's where the dogbone pin needs to go. The plastic retainer needs to go in somewhere near there as well.
B2-Brake-band-1.jpg
That yellow plastic frame thingy is in the way. I cant get it out without breaking it.
I am going to try and do this job - putting the new pin and retainer in upside down on my back and without removing the B2 piston.

if it proves impossible I'll need to drop the transmission mount off and remove the B2 piston. Failing that I'll need to remove the tranny and do this on the bench.

I couldn't let the monologue go any further without saying what a great thread! I don't have one of these, but if i did there is great info in here. What was the pump on ebay listed as being for? Like a caravan water pump?

Craig, That pump is specifically for removing oils. It's lubricated by the oil flowing through it.
Not to be used on water.

Even cheaper now

So finally got the new pins.
New pins.jpg
So In tried to install them as per diagram from MB. I just wasn't happening upside down. Things wouldn't go in.
I needed to get this yellow plastic part out to get a fighting chance.
Pin 03.jpg
Here's an image of what it looks like without the yellow bit.
Pin 04.jpg
after a little bit of thought. Hang on a minute. The diagram is not quite accurate.

Maybe it should be like this.
pin02.jpg
Sure enough - it's logical and the pin and retainer went in and fitted like so.
pin 07.jpg
Here's another view.
Pin 01.jpg
You will notice the retainer slips over a round lug and holds the dogbone pin in place. The smaller end of the dogbone pin goes into the round lug.
The thicker end of the dogbone pin slots into the brake band - snuggly.

Now to put the transmission back together.

Great reference for anyone faced with this problem. It looks like it was mainly just that the retainer broke and when you look at that bit of plastic, bit of a shame - underengineered?

Unfortunately :wall: :wall:

Car actually moves forward now - however only in one gear - wont change out of first.

Obviously I have missed something or haven't put the valve body back in correctly.
I'll have a look at next week.

In reality. Someone on another forum pointed out that the brake band is most likely worn and this likely contributed to the pin falling out.
Chances are the pin will fall out again in the near future.
New Brake band means rebuild - or another transmission.

Update II.

Methodically went through all the scenarios that could cause a transmission to stick in first gear. Checked through forum posts and other info on line.

Checked the Bowden cable, kick down switch.
Checked the fluid level again - topped up another 750ml - it was full previously.

Started car shifted gears between first and reverse up and down a few times.

Went for a drive.

Transmission changing beautifully

Drove it in stop start traffic and then a spin up the freeway.
Smooth changes and quiet.

All Good - so Far.

So far so good, except for that lingering burnt smell from the region of the transmission tunnel. :dontknow:

Looks like the brake band is toast.

The pin falling out was probably a symptom of the real problem.
Did I mention that the economy has deteriorated at least 30%

The parts car I sourced is too good to wreck just to get a transmission.

I saw another prospective parts car for sale on one of those nameless car sites.
'94 model - 115,000K's only great condition $2,000.00.

Went to have a look. Car was equipped with a 722.6. - actually a '97 model. 115,000ks turned out to be 1,115,000 k's.
Bits and pieces missing everywhere , paintwork shoddy, steering wheel plastic worn down almost to the steel rim etc etc.
The sales guy with a straight face tried to tell me it drove brilliantly with such low K's.
The front seat was so bad when I sat in it by body was sideways leaning against the door. - The door which had no proper opening furniture.
If you see that car advertised - steer well clear.

So.....Here's the spare parts car.

The body is straight and there's hardly a mark in the paintwork. Service records.
Registered for 6 months and drives beautifully.

Too good too part out. :snooty:

Needs the AC knobs switches sorted out, some engine mounts and probably a cat. I have the latter items and know where I can source the console switches.
