Engine slows then power then slowes. C180

Post by piperjon » Tue 30 Jun, 2015 3:50 pm

Hi Guys,

I thought I had bad spark plugs, so I changed them and no difference.
problem++ as you are driving the car say up a hill. The engine will slow lightly then power on then slow. It does this all the time. My C180 is a 5 speed manual and if I keep it in 3rd gear up a grade say doing 45KPH it really shows you this problem. All other gears are the same. In 5th gear do 100KPH it like if you were lifting your foot off and back on again. But not flat to the floor.

Is it the fuel filter as I have no idea where to go.

Hi Guys,

No one has had this problem. I can hold the accelerator down a little so you are doing about 40 or 50KPH and the engine is holding it's revs and then you can feel the engine rev a little harder and back to where the rev was. It will do this all the time. Out on the HighWay doing a 100KPH you can feel it doing the same. More power then back to where is was and more power again. You can feel the car pickup and then drop off. I don't know where to go or try to fix this problem. I will not take the car to the Merc people as they just rip you off. Anyway I battle on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guy's.

Never found the problem. So I de register the car. It was driver me mad. Took the car to a so called Mercedes man who changed the cam sensor and said it was fixed. Paid $220 for labour about a hour and $40 for the sensor which was second hand. I car ran ok until I drove it up a big hill and it started again. Rang the guy who said it must be in the carb. Still the same. So two days ago I reregistered the Mercedes and it ran ok but seams to have less power when taking off after stopping. Maybe I should buy a new cam sensor because that second hand one could be the problem.
If any guy has had the same problem and got it fixed PLEASE let me know.

I don't know these newer engines, but I'm wondering how good your mechanic was if he thought your car had a carburetor ?

Some guesses: either fuel (mixture, or fuel pressure) or timing related. Either a sensor is faulty and driving an output (cycling) more then less....or could it be a throttle position sensor that's wonky?

Thoughts, anyone?

Get your fuel pressure checked.
Could be fuel pump or fuel pressure valves.

There is a cam sensor at the front of the engine and Crank position sensor at the rear above the starter.
