Custom Number Plates

Post by Des » Sat 26 Jan, 2008 7:47 pm

Do you have custom number plates? What are they?

I am thinking about getting these, with Tas plates you need to have the T at the start so only leaves you two letters and three numbers to pick from with euro plates, this is the best I can come up with.

Yes, I have custom plates.

The rules have changed since I got mine.

When I got mine you had a Q leading and a Z trailing and were allowed 2 letters and 2 numbers, PPQ have since changed that rule.

I chose to personalise the plate to me, rather than the car so I can use it on whatever car I have at the time. The letters and numbers have significance to me...

The Merc still has Dad's 'DP' plates on it and always will.

The plates on my other cars all have my initials 'MP' on them. I've used the numbers to make discrete reference to the cars. The numbers on one car's plates is actually the cubic capacity of the engine down to the last cc. On another, I couldn't get the cc's, so I got the year of manufacture.

Speaking for myself, I don't see the point in duplicating the maker's name or model number on my plates. IMO, that's what the badges are for!
Cheers,
Michael

We have NSW custom plates as follows:

RONZ 1 on a W210 E240 and ALICEZ on the R107 450SL

Many years ago in the UK I drove a Volvo Amazon on 'A3' plates and the Company also owned A2 on a Ford Granada & A4 on a 300TE or maybe a 280 ( I think A1 was the very first number plate issued and at that time it was owned by Lord Montague and affixed to a vintage vehicle at his car museum in Beaulieu in the SW of England) These three UK issued plates would now be worth the cost of a VERY VERY nice property back home and who could estimate the cost of A! ?

There’s a loophole in SA!

Pre 80-ish cars with S or R number plates can have any plate style they want, as long as it is legible. I’ve even seen older 70’s jags and euro cars with discoloured plastic number plates that fit the shape on the back perfectly. If your car has the “SA the festival state” plates you must use the reflective, standard size government plate.

I found a seller on ebay who would make a plate with any number you wanted, using a real German Euro plate. I had one made for my Mini, as my particular model Mini came out with the English style bootlid, which was designed for the long, thin European plates – I had to cut my SA plate so that it would fit which looked a bit dodgy. All I had to do to the plate was make a ‘SA’ sticker to cover up the ‘D’.

Anyway, this is the result. Cost me about $40 and looks awesome compared to my hacked up ‘Festival State’ plate. And the best part is that I keep my current number and don’t have to line up at transport sa for 4 hours.

Image

The bad news is that this guy is no longer selling these plates on ebay (I think it’s cos he kept getting bad feedback for long postage times and plates being bent in transit).

But, there is a fantastic site that will make a plate for you in almost any style – even the 70’s German style plates that a W123 would have come with in Germany when new! Check this out:

Image

http://www.licenseplates.tv/

A bit more expensive than the one on ebay, but if I wanted to upgrade my plates, this way I would have an authentic looking plate without having to go anywhere near Transport SA!

Don’t know if other states have this law for older cars though…

Does anyone know if it is legal in Victoria to use plates that aren't issued by VicRoads? I know in SA you have to use plates from an 'approved manufacturer'

Because a friend owns a 16V with N MB 16V and another has their initials and 2316 I had to think of another style of plate. The NSW euro plates now have a gold/black with white letters as an alternative to the black on white with blue ends.
Stella came with the obligatory 'w--ker plates' but it was an apt description, so they stayed on. Lurch is build #000848 so that may be a little less easy to decipher, but the car deserved special plates, being a very early build SLC, and a very early typ 107. Given production of the 107 started in 1971, build 000848 was a 1972 car, it is one of the earliest SLC's to roll off the production line. being a 625 delivery makes it a special thing personally to me, but these days it has little relevance.

Gretel has Nat's personal plate on it - back in the day when you could own your plate outright in NSW (not the case now)

The AMG plates I bought for when I decide to either change Stella's plates or I bring in a 500E hammer or a widebody 6.0 coupe.
Patience is a virtue... so I am told. :clock:

The only one I have left (in terms of customised plates) as the NSW government has decided to make the plates another cashcow for it.
They even sold the rights to operate the custom plates to a private company!

A bit of vanity, but hey, there is only ONE of those plates in NSW :glasses2:

Back when I purchased my 350SLC in April 1983, it had standard issue black on yellow NSW plates. At that time you could order "personalised" plates with two letters and three or four numerals in white on black or "personalised" versions of the black on yellow plates with the normal three letters and three numerals. Either of these "personalised" plates could be ordered with the payment of a one-off fee.

In 1983 standard issue NSW plates hadn't reached the letter "S" in the alphabet (from memory they were only up to about "M"). Ordering personalised plates meant taking a punt that your desired plate was available as it wasn't possible to check for a desired combination as is possible today (if the desired plate wasn't available you would be issued with an alternative). Late in 1983 I applied for the plate "SLC-350" and was fortunate to get it (I knew "SLC-450" had gone as I had seen it on a 450SLC).

Now that I have decided to sell the 350SLC, I am faced with the decision whether to keep the plate or not. I figure that if someone is willing to pay a good price for the car, I will allow the plate to stay with it (or if someone pays me enough for the plate I'll throw the car in with it). If the selling price of the car doesn't especially excite me, then I guess there will be a 190E 2.3 running around with the plate "SLC-350".

In the NT personalised plates can be had for a one off fee under $200. There are no annual fees and they are for life. Any combination of numbers or numerals are available. One of the last places where the government does not exploit or tax its citizens to death I believe. :bounce: But for how long... They curbed the open speed limit up there a fews years back, as tourists, mainly, were killing themselves out there.

Here's my plates on my 560SEL back in the early '90's

Had them since 1971 - when they came along in Vic Roads sequence. No personalised plates then - you had to be lucky.
Been on multiple vehicles since 1971. Unfortunately the plates go with the car and the person that they are registered to - in my case my wife. She currently doesn't own a car so the plates are allegedly in suspension.

Interestingly enough, while I was overseas my mother was driving my car in NSW she was offered Big Bucks for the plates by a professional fisherman. Fishing boats registrations start with L.F.B. - Licensed Fishing Boat.

Image

In case your wondering - that little strap on the grill underneath the star and badge was for the wedding ribbons.

Very interesting Ivanerrol. A credit to you for keeping these plates so long. Not always an easy task. I have let many personalised plates go over the years for various reasons. Don't know if I could pass up a good offer though, like you had from the fisherman. I had "Turbo 6" in SA during 1996-1997 on a VL Turbo. Advertised them for $3200, hoping some rich 911 guy would snap them up. No such joy- they were surrendered whenI had them in 'suspension' for the 3 year limit, after a Taxi driver wrote off my car, performing an illegal U-Turn outside the RAH on North Tce, Adelaide in 1997. Incidentally he had no insurance and no money. In hindsight the main thing is lucky he lived- hit him direct at 60km/h, missing his driver door by a foot or two.

Can't help but pass comment on the white W126 in the photo. As far as I am concerned they SAY mercedes Benz and exude class in the masses, even today. And as "420SE's" signature reads, are "Undoubtedly the last best large body MB". Looks like the perfect wedding car, although I am surprised your wife did not remove the grill strap, ...just in case! :laughing6:

An employee of mine ,years ago told me had a cast alloy number plate, NSW XXX . He told me it was from a car he had owned but while he was away ,his father had sold the car . Years later i saw the same car,it had just been sold from the estate of a West Australian Billionaire for several hundred thousand dollars.... my employee had been paid $3500 by a mr Holmes 'A court for his 1928 Hispano Suiza. He kept the plate to remind himself that there are some cheeky buggers out there.

Thought this was interesting... The below excerpt and link are the protocol guidlines for number plates for somone in Oz from a diplomatic mission, bearing diplomatic immunity. They must display these plates unless there are exceptional safety reasons not to, then they may be issued a standard plate to remain covert. There was a write up not long ago in Sydney papers of Dip's doing outrageous speeds in their prestige cars and simply being let off the hook due to their extravegant privilledges- Wow how cool would that be! :glasses2: I love how in the Bond films, he was always able to make reference to the alpha and numeric combinations of number plates issued by the DMV to particular vehicles, like the classic Aston Martin he made reference to on one occasion. I guess the point being having a knowledge of number plates, may impress some people at a dinner party right...??? :laughing6:

"Diplomatic number plates issued to foreign missions and diplomats in the ACT display the letters DC or DX followed by four or five numerals. The plates have black text on a powder blue background: the first two digits designate the mission with which the vehicle is associated and the last two digits identify the owner. Official vehicles and those owned by the head of the mission and members of the diplomatic staff of the mission and their eligible dependent family members carry DC number plates. Those owned by administrative and technical, and service staff of the mission and their eligible dependent family members carry DX plates. This applies, irrespective of whether or not a vehicle was purchased under privilege.
Requests for the issue of DC and DX number plates should be made to Protocol Branch, indicating the owner's name and the vehicle details, through a note verbale. Protocol Branch will allocate the registration number and arrange for the Dickson Motor Registry to issue the number plates.
In the States and the Northern Territory, 'CC' registration plates are available from the local motor vehicle registration authority. Requests for vehicle registration should be communicated in a note verbale to the relevant DFAT State Office. State and Northern Territory motor vehicle registration authorities issue CC plates for vehicles owned by consulates-general and consulates (headed by a career consular officer) and consular officers in their respective state or territory. Consular employees in most states are not issued with CC plates and must carry standard plates instead. In some states honorary consuls are also issued with CC plates.
Diplomatic and consular vehicles are not exempt from the requirements of the Motor Vehicles Standards Act, which relates to vehicle safety standards. Registration must be renewed every 12 months.
Motor vehicle registrations in the ACT are provided free of charge to missions, to their diplomatic and administrative and technical staff, and to dependent members of their households. The cost of registration in other states and territories is a matter for the relevant state or territory government authorities."

I had my Pagoda on club plates but because of the restrictions on use I reregistered it to full daily driver status.

These are the new QLD REG plates.

They were a perfect combination for a W113 MB Roadster

I have 2 sets, as per the attached photos:

https://picasaweb.google.com/brondubai/CustomPlates

The one on the Merc, for those who don't know their Roman Numerals 'IX' is the number '9' (these plates came off a SEAT,from a guy on the VW Watercooled Forum...apparently they originally belonged to a Mathematician)

The other plates on the Suby, are just standard issue Vic.plates that I've had for about 11years now, and I think they cost me a total of $54...

No annual fees on either of these plates is the best part.. :toothy7: :toothy7: :toothy7:

Joe,
I apologise, I have re-checked and the information you have is correct.

I was under the impression that they charged "per character".

That is incorrect, up to 9 characters is one price.

No problem mate - I wasn't having a go, I was wondering what the price was, then I found the link, so I thought if anyone was curious about buying a set they could follow the link.

even for the full house 9 character acrylic plate, it's less than half the price of a qld 'prestige' plate where the maximum you can order is 6 alphanumeric characters (there are a handful of special issue 7 character plates, but they cannot be purchased over the counter - they are special limited release auctioned plates)

in NSW the scheme as Michel says, has been handed off to a bunch of goons who see $$$$$ annual fees abound...

Victoria had this rule (not sure if it still exists) where you could request the special plate, and the price was about $500, but you never actually owned the plate. you were renting it from vicroads.

I've never had an S.A. regoe'd car. in the NT the fees are cheap. it really is a great place for rego. you don't need personal plates if you have NT rego.... it's rare enough just to see the NT plates, that they are just as cool.
